Allen Iverson looking to join D-League?

US PresswireAllen Iverson does not give up easily. The 11-time All-Star and four-time NBA scoring champ hasn't played in the NBA since his 25-game stint with the Philadelphia 76ers back in the 2009-10 season, but he's still hoping to get back into the game.

ESPN reports that the 36-year-old is "willing to play in the Caribbean, in South America or even in the D-League if it gives him a chance to return to the NBA."

"Allen only wants to play if there's a possibility that it leads to the NBA," the source told the ESPN. "That's the only way he would go to one of these lower leagues. He wants to get back to the NBA and leave the game on his terms."

Iverson played in Turkey last year but lasted only 10 games due to various injuries. He spent 14 seasons in the league, averaging 26.7 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game.

ESPN notes that Iverson's desire may be related to his financial situation: "On Monday, a judge in Georgia garnished funds from Iverson's bank account to repay about $860,000 that he owes a jeweler."

The D-League is becoming the home of former NBA players who squandered their talents or played their way out of the league.

Antoine Walker, Mike James, Gerald Green, Rafer Alston, Marcus Banks, Antonio Daniels, and Bobby Simmons are all playing or have played for the D-League this season. A.I. would be right at home.

The best player in the D-League right now though isn't any of those guys. It's Manny Harris, who was cut by the Cavaliers at the beginning of the season. He's averaging 35 points, 10 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block in his last 3 games. The Cavaliers cut him to make room for Mychel Thompson because coach Byron Scott was doing a personal favor for Mychel's dad. Some team is going to scoop Harris up pretty soon and make the Cavs regret their decision.

didn't bulls sign mike james recently leading in 3 pointers for bulls or was it guy with similar name.

Yes, the Bulls did sign James after he appeared in 3 games in the D-League. Then they sent him back and re-signed him after Rose went down again. He's nearly 37 years old and hadn't played an NBA game in 2 years, but he has played well in limited minutes for the Bulls.

get some D-league exp and then sign onto the Lakers in time for the playoffs. They just need a scorer off the bench.....AI can still heave up shots.
    • OMG they killed Kenny! 2 months ago
But is it worth it for him to play a dozen games only to get frustrated and leave early again? He is one of my favorite players before but Lakers should not do it. I think they should also steer clear of Arenas. Team chemistry poison to an already bad situation.

His time has come and gone just like Terrell Owens and Randy Moss. Hmmmm, weren't they all similar as far as attitudes go?

I thought he left on his terms already two years ago? I guess. He better have some of that 2001 speed with a whole new attitude......

Of course it has to do with money. To use the excuse so he can go out on his own terms is such a joke. the man made a fortune and in the movie " Let it Ride'. He did exactly what many of his colleagues do and he " #$%$ it All Away". Yet they want to do what seems to be there common way out blame it on someone else. Must be an athelete thing.

If he didn't make such a fuss about coming off the bench for Mike Conley back when he signed with the Grizzlies he probably would still be playing right now. If he learns how to be humble he might just make it back as a bench player.

You would think that blowing $154,000,000 in less than 15 years and going broke would humble someone. I guess we'll have to wait and see....

I never understood why the NBA doesn't also have a seniors tour of ex champions and allstars that play half court 3 on 3 before NBA games. Tennis and golf have one, why not hoops. Half court they don't have to run and three on three is a finesse games without older players getting completely gassed by running the court.

Never want anybody to go into debt, but Allen Iverson brought it on himself, anybody who can blow 154 million before they're even 40 has nobody to blame but themselves. Hope he can make it back to the NBA though

whatever u think about his past ...some of these nba teams can't get worse (bobcats) ...some teams don't have that much to lose, take a chance ... i think he has been denied nba access, from higher up... (stern)

Poor Iverson... man I loved his Philly team.. designd by Larry Brown for AI to shoot 25-40 shots a game. A great and exciting team. I wouldnt pick him up now, he's trouble. Go back to Europe. Good Luck AI one of the best shooting guards ever

This was the same guy who never showed up to "practice" and would rip the coaches at a press conference saying it wasn't necessary and now he is crying his way back into the league!? NO THANKS!
  • riverman  •  Eugene, Oregon  •  2 months ago
That's exactly the purpose of a development minor league system. You have to qualify to play in golf tournaments or pro tennis events. I don't see it as such a bad move for the guy if it humbles him. D league tours are long bus rides and crappy motels with no entourage tagging along. He'll help the D league by selling some tickets and jerseys as well. Rather see these guys working here instead of Turkey or China. First thing he's going to encounter though is "practice, practice, practice! "

Broke #$%$ dumb #$%$ he squandered over $150,000,000 Yeah that's 150 million! I don't care how good he was at basketball that's just some retard #$%$ A.I.

He already left the NBA on his own terms. He refused to sit on the bench and he walked out. That's it. You won Allen.
