Roy Oswalt won’t join the Tigers

US PresswireRoy Oswalt was supposed to be part of a team with Four Golden Arms last year with the Philadelphia Phillies. While Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels did their part in pacing the 102-win Phils to another postseason bid, Oswalt went on the disabled list twice for a bad back and let in five runs in the crucial Game 3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS. He ended up with a 9-10 record on the season with a 3.69 ERA. (Rookie Vance Worley ended up being the fourth golden arm for the Phils, going 11-3 with a 3.01 ERA.)

Now Oswalt is looking for another team and one thing has been made clear: It won't be the Detroit Tigers. The folks in Motor City were trying to get Oswalt to sign on and even had American League Cy Young winner Justin Verlander give him a recruiting call, according to CBSSports.com. However, Oswalt told the team that he wasn't interested, the site notes.

The consistent rumor is that Oswalt will end up with the Boston Red Sox this season and attempt to show the world that his 34-year-old back is all healed up and he can pitch like he has in previous seasons so he can find a better long-term deal next offseason.

he never seemed happy in Phila, either. Threatened to retire mid year, saying his career stood on its own already. Went home to remove debris from his farm, due to hurricane, got a "leave of absence" from the team, (but pretty sure he still got PAID), threw out his back, went on D.L. Detroit, you are LUCKY he isn't coming!!! Good riddance from Philadelphia, Roy.

Thanks Roy, what a relief. I was afraid they might sign your worn out arm and be paying you while someone else took your starts. Enjoy the DL in Boston.

Davfied (and his flunky NY Hoots) have been stunned by the signing of Prince Fielder by the Tigers.

I think the Tigers just found something else to do with that $$. Reports are that they're very close to signing Prince Fielder to a 9 year, $200+ million contract.

What an idiot. Oswalt would rather pitch in that shoe box better know as Fenway Park rather than spacious Comerica and not join one of the strongest rotations in the league in Detroit? Hmmmm, okay Roy, it's your call. Good luck to you.....your gonna need it.

Oswalt needs to come to the A's. Oakland keeps getting rid of all their younger pitching talent. There are a lot of things to hate about Oakland. Sometimes I wish I weren't a fan.

Would be a great fit for the Blue Jays, they need a vet to teach the kids how to win

Oswalt may fit in well as the 4th in the rotation for the sox; but the team probably needs hitting more than pitching. Maybe Oswalt signs for 7 figures, thus allowing for the sox to go after someone else in the hitting line-up. One more thing, though, I always wondered why Oswalt did not look seriously at Rangers, Cardinals, Astros, or Royals . He always talks about his connection to his home (Oklahoma?), just seems curious the choices he is making.

Unless he wants another shot at the world series (check off Astros and Royals) and some of the contenders feel happy with their rotations (check off rangers and cards).
