    Mets seeking lefty outfielder

US PresswireThe New York Mets have a troubling financial situation, mostly thanks to the fact that owner Fred Wilpon was grossly swindled by his old pal Bernie Madoff. That hasn't given them any room to seriously go after any kind of big-dollar free agents, including their former shortstop Jose Reyes, who is now, of course, with the division rival Miami Marlins.

ESPN has it that the team is on the hunt right now, though, as the free-agent marketplace starts to dry up (and the dollar requirements start to fall) for a left-handed hitting outfielder.

The team is monitoring the situation of such folks as Johnny Damon, Raul Ibanez, Kosuke Fukudome, Rick Ankiel, and Juan Pierre, the site notes.

So far in 2012 , the Mets have signed six free agents: shortstops Ronny Cedeno, Sean Kazman, and Omar Quintanilla, pitchers Miguel Batista and Fernando Cabrera, and right fielder Scott Hairston.

Out of all the names mentioned, Fukudome could be the best option, but I think he still sees himself as an everyday player. Damon wouldn't accept a part time role either and is more a DH at this stage anyways. Pierre and Ibanez are awful fielders. Not what you want out of a 4th outfielder. Ankiel had the one good offensive year in 2008, but that's pretty much it. He'd fit the 4th outfielder role pretty well. Decent defense, great arm, still a good contact hitter.

I wish MLB would force the Wilpon's to sell the team and that Mak Cuban would buy them. Can't wait for 2013. 2012 season is done.

You can take one guy out. Pierre signed a minor leage deal with the Phillies earlier today. Very good speed guy, but bad defensively with zero arm and nothing special hitting wise either.

The Mets are taking the year off from stupid moves so they can work on 2014, 2015. Damon has a place but it isn't with the Mets.

If they stay healthy, and Santana can pitch, the Mets may be surprisingly good this year. With the fences moved in, Bey and Wright should improve with their power number.

The Mets have in Duda and Ike 2 top powerhitters, if Murphy can do what he did last season and Wright is healthy, then they have 4 good men already. I would give Ankiel a fair chance, he has the ability, he needs trust, help and believe in himself.

What about trying Kirk Lowenwies from the minors. Give the guy a shot, see what he can do.

Sad signings..................................REAL SAD. The team who a few years ago could ALMOST compete with the Yankees has gone straight down the rat hole.

Hey Miller, you IDIOT!! The Mets are in this condition because of the Wilpons, not Madoff! The Madoff situation won't be decided until March.
