Giants closing in on deal with Matt Cain?

US PresswireThe San Francisco Giants would like to get Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain signed to long-term deals this offseason. There is optimism that the Cain deal will get done while Lincecum wants more than the team is willing to shell out, CBSSports.com reports.

Lincecum turned down an "offer of at least $100 million for five years," the site notes, so the team "seems to be focusing on deals of two years or one" with him. Lincecum is thought to want a deal for seven or eight years, the paper notes, but would be happy to sign a short-term extension.

Meanwhile, "there is said to be a fair amount of optimism" that the team can sign "Cain on a long-term deal for under $20 million a year."

Cain will be a free agent next offseason if he is not signed to a new deal. He and Cole Hamels  of the Philadelphia Phillies will be the most coveted pitchers of next offseason.

Over the last 5 years Cain is not even in the top 20 in career wins but he is in the top 5
for worst run support. If the Giants could score runs when he pitches then he would be
mentioned in the same category as Doc or any other big name winner.Lincecum is great
but Matt is the real ace on the Giants staff.

Matt Cain should be tied up to a long term contract to make up for the travesty of the deal with Zito. Lincecum's mechanics scare me. It works for him but for how long?

If I were the Giants, I would pass on a long term contract for this guy. Coach Hooter told me about his bad mechanics. Look at the picture and you can see that his follow through will cause many left nip ple injuries that will shorten his career.

if they can't agree on a long term why would lincecum be happy to sign a one or two year deal? if he gets hurt he's lost a lot of money. it's best for him to get to free agency ASAP if he can't get a long term deal now. of course, best for him, not the giants.
