Bidding for Yoenis Cespedes about to begin

US PresswireSince the start of the offseason, the name of Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes has kept coming up as someone who would soon be named a free agent, allowing major-league wallets across the land to magically open and their contents be offered to the slugging outfielder.

    Now the time has come.

The word from MLB.com is that Cespedes, who hit .333 with 33 homers and 99 RBIs in his homeland last year, "has established his residency in the Dominican Republic and is now waiting for approval from Major League Baseball to be declared a free agent."

So far, the Miami Marlins, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians have expressed the most interest in signing him, Cespedes recently said, the site notes.

The expectation is that Cespedes will sign a more lucrative contract than the one fellow defector Aroldis Chapman signed with the Cincinnati Reds, which amounted to a six-year, $30.25 million deal, the site notes.

This is a sham. He should be subject to the draft. American players college or high school don't get to choose where they want to play. They also don't get the opportunity to be bid on by multiple teams. Our kids are at a disadvantage.Somethings wrong here.

This guy looks like Sosa after he swings with the hop. I say he will hit around .265 25hr 70rbi 180K in the states. & he may be more like 27/28 years old.

Could be that center fielder the Rangers have been looking for and could you imagine an outfield with Hamilton, Cruz and Cespedes, backed-up by David Murphy?

George is rolling over in his grave watching his 2 morons sons running the team. This is pocket change to them and they are letting the people of NY down

He would be a great catch for the Yanks since they let Jesus Mentero go. But then again you have dumb and dummer runnning the team now along with dumbness Brian Cashman the Yanks will settle for a has been.

Haha I appreciate Miller omitting his "age."

On a serious note: why Baltimore is on this list of serious contenders? Those guys should look to spend their money on somebody who can pitch. (Despite serious holes at other positions)

Yeah. Sure the Indians are interested in this guy, but if Tribe brass "open their wallet" all you would hear will be crickets.

I can't imagine that the Tigers are actually interested anymore since they just spent almost a quarter billion dollars on a single player! I hope he goes to the White Sox, how have a strong latin american influence on their team.

When will owners and GM's ever learn? Why does this guy (or his agent) think he can demand a multi year/million dollar contract? Sign him to a one year minor league contract, and let him prove himself against other talented young players...before they throw good money away on him. Just because he played well in Cuba, and against other amateur teams...does that mean he's Major League ready? Maybe all the talented players here in the USA should get agents, make publicity videos, and proclaim themselves the next big thing...and forget going into the draft. Demand a multi year/million dollar cantract, and a roster spot on a Major League team. (I know that's what they're pretty much doing now, but why is a Cuban refugee so much better, and worth all this fuss/publicity?)

I love how all these reports include the Orioles as possible suitors. They linked them with Prince Fielder as well, when all the Orioles could afford was to take Fielder to Denny's and discuss how they could never afford them. I guess now they'll take Cespedes to Taco Bell and do the same.

Don't be too sure. Where the heck are the baseball gurus, davfried and NY Hoots to let us all know where this kid will go?

I'd like to see the Yankees get him for about 5 years and 30 million. Put him in right, DH Swisher and use him at first every now and then so Tex can DH. I think this kid has more upside than the other options the Yanks are looking at to DH.
