I'm not going to make the playoffs. And I know why. I called it back in December:

"I stared at Pekka Rinne's game logs for 45 minutes this past Sunday, but wisely decided against picking him up; and he gave up five to St. Louis a few nights later.

... So yeah, Pekka Rinne, enjoy your Calder Trophy. Maybe someday I'll come by and shine it for you."

I wrote that on December 11. The Canadian Farmboys, managed by fellow The Palm Isle writer and Isles' fan, Mr. Bad Example, picked up Rinne on January 16. Rinne has 22 victories and a .921 save percentage. I decided against picking him up back in December because I have Cristobal Huet, who has 18 victories and a .913 save percentage.

Having lost 11 out of their last 15 games, the once mighty Boston Bruins are slowly losing their traction atop the Eastern Conference standings. Currently sitting six points ahead of the red hot New Jersey Devils and a little over a month away until the playoffs begin, the Bruins are picking the wrong time to go through a slump. And just when ESPN's Bill Simmons was gearing up for his annual playoff bandwagon jump!

According to head coach Claude Julien, the commitment flu might have seeped into the Bruins locker room:

"Maybe it's not so much the compete level as it is the commitment to staying with it the whole game," Julien said. "You see commitment at some times, and other times it slips. Full commitment, not half commitment. At the same time, it's timely goals and timely saves and we're not getting either."

By timely saves, Julien is likely referring to any time he decides to put Manny Fernandez in net lately. In his last five starts, Fernandez has allowed 17 goals, posted a .859

All of the talk this week during the general manager's meetings has been about arranged fights, instigator penalties, and Brian Burke (the real one) challenging other GM's to fisticuffs if they voted to eliminate fighting. Last night, Nashville's Wade Belak(notes) and his left hand showed us why hockey fans are attracted to heat of the moment bouts, not the contrived ones. Belak squared off with fellow heavyweight Donald Brashear(notes), and in a sight rarely (if ever) seen, caught the Washington Capitals tough guy with a perfect punch.

Belak wasn't done mixing it up and in the second period, decided to drop the gloves with John Erskine(notes).

The Capitals broke a four game losing streak after Sergei Fedorov's(notes) goal in overtime gave Washington the extra point and a 2-1 win. Nashville suffered their second consecutive loss after winning six straight.

Before last night's 3-2 loss at the hands of the Dallas Stars, the Anaheim Ducks rewarded one of their up and coming talents by allowing Bobby Ryan to change his jersey number from No. 54 to No. 9. It's Ducks policy for players who've established themselves to be allowed to change their number.
