    • Report: Brian Rafalski expected to retire after 11 NHL seasons

RAFALSKI copySportsnet's Nick Kypreos reported late Monday afternoon that Detroit Red Wings defenseman Brian Rafalski is set to announce his retirement from the NHL as early as this week. According to Kypreos, injuries are why Rafalski will move on, and he played in the playoffs without an ACL in his knee.

USA Today's Kevin Allen reports that an announcement will be made on Wednesday.

Rafalski has played 11 seasons in the NHL with the New Jersey Devils and Red Wings after five years in Europe coming out of the University of Wisconsin. He's a three-time Stanley Cup champion and represented Team USA in the last three Winter Olympics.

If Rafalski is planning to hang up the skates, it's news to Red Wings GM Ken Holland, who told the Detroit Free Press that he's yet to be informed of any decision.

Should Rafalski retire, that frees up at least $6 million in cap space for Detroit as it also waits for official confirmation of Nicklas Lidstrom's future plans. With the salary cap reported set to rise before

Luc Robitaille spent 19 years in the NHL and left with a pretty impressive resume. He won the Calder Trophy in 1987, a Stanley Cup with Detroit in 2002 and was an eight-time All-Star. He finished as the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer among left wings and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009.

Now working in the Los Angeles Kings' organization, Robitaille has been the team's president of business operation since 2007, a job he took a year after retiring from the NHL.

Beginning Monday, Robitaille has partnered with sports memorabilia auction house Classic Auctions (they of Paul Henderson Summit Series jersey fame) and put up 62 lots for bid with proceeds benefiting Echoes of Hope, a charity he and his wife founded to help needy children. The auctions end on June 21.

"Lucky Luc" decided to auction off items from his personal collection after he was introduced to Classic Auctions by former Kings goaltender Rogie Vachon, who'd worked with the auction house in the past.

    • Joe Thornton plans to play in Game 5 against Canucks

Joe Thornton was leading the NHL playoff scoring race until Henrik Sedin's four-point night Sunday put him on top for the moment.

After losing his scoring lead and in the midst of attempting to help the San Jose Sharks claw back from a 4-0 deficit, Thornton was dealt another blow when, like teammate Douglas Murray at the end of the first period, he was on the tracks as the Raffi Torres train was coming through:

Thornton did not return to the game for the remainder of the third period and in the postgame press conference head coach Todd McLellan did not have an update on his condition. Thornton wasn't available to media after the game, either.

But Thornton did confirm to the San Jose Mercury News' Mark Emmons on Sunday night that he will be in the Sharks' lineup for Game 5 Tuesday night, texting him Sunday night: "100 percent. It's playoffs, got to play through everything."

You knew that unless Thornton was without limb he'd be lining up for San Jose in what could possibly be its final

    • Sunday’s Three Stars: Canucks’ quick strikes earn 3-1 series lead

      BURROWS copy

No. 1 Star: Henrik Sedin, Vancouver Canucks

Sedin took over the scoring lead with a franchise-playoff record four-assist night in their 4-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks to take a 3-1 series lead. It was on the Canucks' final goal early in the third period by Alexandre Burrows that Sedin put his pass through Antti Niemi's legs:

No. 2 Star: Sami Salo, Vancouver Canucks

With Vancouver scoring three power play goals in a 1:55 span in the second period, it was Salo who potted two of them and helped set up Ryan Kesler for the first one. Salo hadn't scored since Game 4 against Chicago in the opening round and it was his first multi-point game of the season.

No. 3 Star: Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks

Luongo needed to help the Canucks stave off five straight power plays for San Jose to start the game and then later stand tall as the Sharks outshot Vancouver 17-3 in the final period. Making 33 saves, Luongo earned his 11th win of the playoffs.

      Honorable mention: Daniel Sedin wasn't

    • Canucks capitalize on power plays, move a win away from Final

      CANUCKS11

The story of Game 4 between the San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks can be summed up with one game stat:

      POWERPLAYS
      San Jose 0-for-5
      Vancouver 3-for-5

Like Bourne noted earlier, with the series getting deeper, discipline would be a major factor and it showed again today. For another game, Vancouver began a march to the penalty box, taking the first five in Game 4, but the Sharks' inability to capitalize on those opportunities cost them dearly as the Canucks took a 3-1 series lead after a 4-2 victory.

As we've seen many times in the NHL, any time a team takes multiple penalties in a row, you just know things will swing the other way soon enough and they sure did for the Canucks. San Jose took four penalties in a 2:46 span in the second period, giving Vancouver three straight 5-on-3 powerplays -- something that according to the Elias Stats Bureau has never happened in a playoff game before -- that turned the game for good.

Scoring three times in 115 seconds, the Canucks put themselves

    • Fans see Tampa off by forming human Lightning bolt

We've all either seen or been in attendance when a team wins a championship on the road and they're met upon returning home at the airport by a large contingent of fans. It's a great way to begin the championship celebrations that will continue for the next few days.

A recent trend has seen fans seeing off and welcoming home teams from playoff road trips, not just when they win a championship. During the first two rounds, Nashville Predators fans greeted and sent off the team at Nashville International Airport.

Sunday morning, as the Tampa Bay Lightning prepared to travel up to Boston for Game 5 against the Bruins on Monday night, the team organized an interesting way for fans to wish the players good luck and send them up north.

Fans gathered in one of the parking lots at the Tampa airport and formed a human lightning bolt, visible to the players when they took off.

    • Saturday’s Three Stars: Smith’s relief aids in Tampa comeback

      SMITH copy

No. 1 Star: Mike Smith, Tampa Bay Lightning

After Dwayne Roloson allowed three first period goals, Lightning head coach Guy Boucher called upon Smith at the start of the second period. Twenty one saves later, Smith had stabilized the defense, while the Lightning offense put five unanswered goals past Tim Thomas for a 5-3 come-from-behind win to tie their series 2-2.

No. 2 Star: Simon Gagne, Tampa Bay Lightning

While Smith has the defensive MVP for the Lightning, Gagne was the offensive catalyst with a goal and two assists, including the game-winner 6:54 into the third period.

No. 3 Star: Teddy Purcell, Tampa Bay Lightning

Purcell entered Game 4 with two goals in the playoffs and in a 1:03 span matched that output to spark the Tampa comeback. He had scored just once since Game 6 of the first round against Pittsburgh.

Honorable mention: Patrice Bergeron scored two of Boston's three first period goals ... Sean Bergenheim nows leads all players with nine goals ...Vincent Lecavalier won

    • Thrashers fans rally, buy tickets as Winnipeg sale talks continue

      ATLRALLY copy

As talks to finalize a sale between True North Sports and Entertainment and the Atlanta Spirit Group continue on for the ownership of the Atlanta Thrashers, the franchise continued planning for the 2011-12 NHL season as fans rallied to show support for its future.

Two days after a Globe and Mail report stated that a deal for the Thrashers to move to Winnipeg was done, the team went forward with its planned Select-a-Seat event allowing fans to choose their seats as part of season ticket packages.

Outside Philips Arena, in the parking area known as "The Gulch", about 300 fans attended the "Save the Thrashers" rally according to Yahoo!'s own Jay Busbee, who writes for the From the Marbles and Devil Ball Golf blogs. Fans chanted, expressed their support for the 11-year old franchise and anger towards ownership, and some even burned a Winnipeg Jets banner.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution spoke with a couple of fans at the rally:
