  • Colorado Eagles-Florida Everblades brawl features goalie fight (Video)

Sean Leahy at Puck Daddy 2 hrs ago

The Colorado Eagles beat the Florida Everblades handily 5-1 in ECHL action Saturday night. As is tradition, tempers flared late in the dying seconds of the game and a brawl erupted, which featured a goalie fight.

A brief disagreement between Colorado’s Darryl Bootland and Florida goaltender Anthony Peters set things off which led to Peters skating down ice and drop the gloves with Eagles netminder Kris Lazaruk.

In all, 106 penalty minutes were handed out during that stoppage. The emotions remained high 11 seconds later when another exchange of pleasantries occurred and 46 more PIMs were distributed.

The evening was also "Stick Up For Kids Night" with Eagles fans raising $57,000 through a game used stick auction benefiting four local kids charities

  • Brandon Dubinsky suspended 1 game for cross-check on Sidney Crosby (Video)

Sean Leahy at Puck Daddy 22 hrs ago

The rivalry between Brandon Dubinsky and Sidney Crosby continued Friday night as the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in overtime. During the second period, Dubinsky cross-checked Crosby in the neck and then broke his stick on a second blow after the Penguins captain fell to the ice.

Those actions were enough for the Department of Player Safety to hold a hearing with Dubinsky on Saturday and later hand him a one-game suspension.

(So I guess this means Matthew Barnaby is out a grand?)

“I'm not surprised,” Crosby said afterward, via the Tribune-Review. “If I was going to get one of those shots, it would probably be from him.”

  • Alain Vigneault wonders who you'd prefer as a son: Henrik Lundqvist or Brad Marchand?

Sean Leahy at Puck Daddy 1 day ago

Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins was called for goaltender interference during Friday’s matinee against the New York Rangers when he collided with Henrik Lundqvist.

Bruins head coach Claude Julien, dubious that it was the correct call, had some advice for the Rangers netminder after the game.

"I know he does some acting on the side, but it doesn't need to be on the ice,” he said, via WEEI’s DJ Bean.

In response, Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault defended his netminder Saturday morning with one simple question.

  • NHL Three Stars: Getzlaf records five assists for Ducks; Pageau leads Senators

Sean Leahy at Puck Daddy 4 days ago

No. 1 Star: Ryan Getzlaf, Anaheim Ducks

The Anaheim captain had a hand in all five of the Ducks’ goals in their 5-3 win over the Calgary Flames. Getzlaf recorded five assists for the first time since Oct. 2008, tying a franchise record.

No. 2 Star: Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Ottawa Senators

The size of the nets in Dallas were no problem Tuesday night as the Ottawa Senators downed the Stars 7-4 at American Airlines Center. Pageau led the offensive rush for the Senators scoring twice and assisting on another for his first multi-point game since Jan. 15. One of Pageau’s two third period goals came shorthanded to give him the NHL lead with three:

No. 3 Stars: Rickard Rakell / Corey Perry, Anaheim Ducks

Rakell and Perry each scored twice in the Ducks win, thanks in part to Getzlaf assists.

Honorable Mention: Craig Anderson made 33 saves, including this diving stop on Jamie Benn which then led to a Mike Hoffman empty net goal:

    Did You Know?

The @AnaheimDucks improved to 21-0-0 in their last 21 regular-season home games vs. CGY dating to April 4, 2004.

  • The Brothers Benn hook up for pretty alley-oop shorthanded goal (Video)

Sean Leahy at Puck Daddy 4 days ago

There were a lot of goals in Dallas tonight as the Stars fell to the Ottawa Senators 7-4. The prettiest one of the eleven came early in the third period when Jordie and Jamie Benn hooked up for a shorthanded tally.

Down a man, Jordie took the puck in the defensive zone, saw brother Jamie shooting up ice and flipped a perfect pass that took one bounce and landed on the reigning MVPs stick, who then proceeded to beat Craig Anderson with a great move.

Notice as soon as the puck leaves Erik Karlsson’s stick at the blue line and heads toward Jordie, Jamie starts making his move up ice and calls for it.

The Stars’ eventually came up short, but the Benns did their best to try and jumpstart a comeback.

Well, they’re certainly better than the ones that showed a pretty low level of creative design for their 2014 Stadium Series game. And did anyone outside of Carl Sandburg know that Chicago is known as the "City of Big Shoulders?"

  • Watch Ray Ferraro interview son Landon during Bruins-Maple Leafs (Video)

Sean Leahy at Puck Daddy 5 days ago

There was a really cool moment after the second period on Monday night’s 4-3 Boston Bruins victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. TSN analyst Ray Ferraro, who was stationed between the benches at Air Canada Centre, had the opportunity to interview his son, 24-year old Landon, the newest member of the Bruins.

If you close your eyes and listen to it, it’s pretty amazing how much father and son sound alike.

The younger Ferraro was claimed on waivers by the Bruins on Sunday from the Detroit Red Wings, who drafted him 32nd overall in 2009. During his NHL career, Ray played 1,258 games with six teams, scoring 408 goals.

  • Ondrej Pavelec out until at least January with 'significant' knee sprain

Sean Leahy at Puck Daddy 5 days ago

The NHL’s most interesting sixth-place team, as per Sean McIndoe, will go with the goaltending tandem of Michael Hutchinson and Connor Hellebuyck until at least January, possibly longer.

Winnipeg Jets head coach Paul Maurice announced on Monday that Ondrej Pavelec has been placed on injury reserve with a “significant” knee sprain.

    For now, it’s Hutchinson’s net.

“(Hutchinson) has been training for this. He knows he's going to get the opportunity to play a bunch of games in a row,” Maurice said Sunday, via the Winnipeg Free Press. “It’s a little bit different mindset, but it's the one he had prior to getting to this level.”

Hutchinson has been given eight starts for the Jets and posted a .918 even strength save percentage. Meanwhile, down in the AHL, Hellebuyck has posted a .927 save percentage in 10 starts for the Manitoba Moose.

  • Improved Sergei Bobrovsky leading Blue Jackets' turnaround

Sean Leahy at Puck Daddy 6 days ago

Don’t look now, but Sergei Bobrovsky’s lost confidence may have been found.

The Columbus Blue Jackets netminder was stellar in Friday night’s 4-0 shutout of the Nashville Predators making 39 saves, including this highlight-reel stop on James Neal:

The win was another sign of a revived Blue Jackets squad under new head coach John Tortorella.

Following the team’s fourth loss to begin the 2015-16 season, a 7-3 thrashing by the Ottawa Senators, Bobrovsky admitted to having “zero confidence.” The rough start led to Todd Richards’ eventual dismissal, and installing Tortorella has brought a turnaround, with ‘Lumbus winning four of their last five and going from pointless in their opening eight games to within five points of a wild card spot 13 games later.

Winning creates confidence, and the Blue Jackets’ disastrous start was early enough in the season that there was still plenty of rope to use to help them climb out.
