  • Who are soccer's biggest underachieving teams right now?

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 23 hrs ago

With the notable exception of early-90s Bart Simpson, nobody likes to be called an underachiever. However, that is a label that can be applied fairly liberally in the beautiful game right now. Plenty of teams are punching well below their weight in terms of financial muscle, experience and reputation.

I’ve put together a list of the five teams who are truly excelling in the field of failing to meet expectation, which includes a certain blue team from southwest London that has experienced a spectacular fall from grace in this campaign.

  • Riyad Mahrez and the All-Time Premier League Bargain XI

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 3 days ago

In the process of putting together one of the most incredible seasons in sporting history, Leicester City have encouraged world-beating performances from several players with humble origins. Jamie Vardy, N’Golo Kante and Christian Fuchs were all bargain purchases who have helped shape a title winning season, while Riyad Mahrez’s standout campaign was deemed worthy of the PFA Player of the Year Award on Sunday evening.

Mahrez cost just £350,000 ($500,000) when he moved to Leicester in 2014, which makes him the cheapest Player of the Year in decadesand one of the best value signings in the league’s history.

The Algerian features in my All-Time Premier League Bargain XI alongside some very cheap purchases who produced excellent results for their clubs.

  • Why Real Madrid should not extend Cristiano Ronaldo's contract

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 7 days ago

There isn’t a team in the world that wouldn’t want Cristiano Ronaldo in its starting XI. Well, possibly Barcelona, but the point is the Portuguese megastar is one of the finest sportsmen ever to kick a sphere of leather.

Real Madrid is looking to lock Ronaldo down with a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the Bernabeu until 2020. This may seem like a good idea, but it would actually be a poor investment. Because it is time to let Ronaldo fly the coup.

  • Here are the best signings of the 2015-16 season

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 10 days ago

The Beatles famously told us that money can’t buy you love, but it's also true that you can’t always buy your team a great new player.

Some of the most hyped transfers of last summer have proven quite unfruitful for the clubs who splashed the cash: Memphis Depay and Christian Benteke are two prime examples.

The best transfer deals often aren’t the most expensive or eagerly awaited, as proven by my list of the top signings of the 2015-16 season. At the beginning of the campaign, there’s a good chance you hadn’t heard of a couple of the names, but they have woven themselves into the fabric of football with some standout displays.

  • What is wrong with Barcelona?

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 15 days ago

Less than a month ago Barcelona seemed unstoppable. The champions of Spain and Europe played beautiful soccer every week, they scored whenever they felt like it and up until the recent international break, they were on a 39-game unbeaten streak.

Since that international break, however, something has gone wrong. The formidable front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar returned from South America tired, while problems in the Blaugrana midfield and defense started to emerge. And on Wednesday, Barcelona had its bid for a Champions League title repeat ended by Spanish nemesis Atletico Madrid.

  • Could Kobe Bryant have been a soccer star?

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 17 days ago

After an illustrious and incredibly successful career, Kobe Bryant will be stepping onto the court for the final time this Wednesday.

The Black Mamba holds a significant place in the pantheon on basketball history, but it could have been very different. Kobe has admitted that he prefers soccer and that he almost chose to pursue the sport as a child.

  • The five worst Premier League players of 2015-16 so far

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 21 days ago

As you are undoubtedly aware, this Premier League season has been madder than a box of frogs. Chelsea is stuck in mid-table, Leicester City is making all the established teams look foolish and Spurs are considerably less Spursy than usual.

It’s also been a season in which some big names have failed to deliver on the field. Eden Hazard and Christian Benteke, we’re looking at you.

Accordingly, I’ve compiled a list of the five worst Premier League players of 2015-16 so far, but it has not been decided entirely by results. (If that were the case, the list would consist only of Aston Villa players!) Instead, I have combined attainment, price-tag justification and how well each player has met expectations.

  • Bigger is not better: The Champions League format needs to be changed

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 24 days ago

The Champions League continues to enjoy its status as one of the biggest sporting competitions in the world – but it can’t necessarily afford to rest on its laurels. According to Sky Sports (via Goal.com), audience figures are diminishing and fans around the world may be keen for change. The Guardian recently reported that UEFA is considering a revamp of the format, with the number of teams entering the group stage being halved to 16. Apparently, the biggest continental sides are keen to change the competition so it may compete financially with the Premier League – something it currently fails to do. The video above explains why a revamp of the Champions League would be very welcome and why change will not guarantee spots for the biggest sides.

  • The American sports equivalent to Leicester City's Cinderella title run

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 1 mth ago

It is no exaggeration to say Leicester are on the cusp of pulling off one of the greatest fairytale feats in European soccer history.

On the back of a campaign where they survived by the skin of their teeth, the Foxes have humiliated the Premier League's biggest clubs by topping the table for the entirety of 2016 so far. They currently sit five points clear and int he driving seat for a spectacular upset.

But what is the equivalent of this Cinderella story in American sports? Well, it might just be the Greatest Show on Turf: The 1999 St Louis Rams.

  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic won’t cut it in the Premier League

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 1 mth ago

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s reign in Paris will come to an end this summer as the mighty Swede’s mighty contract with Paris Saint-Germain reaches its mighty conclusion.

At 34 years old, retirement appears to be the last thing on Ibra’s mind, with the common consensus being that he will find one more club to improve upon his incredible record of 13 league titles in 15 seasons.

The talismanic striker has been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Chelsea among those reportedly interested in his signature.

But is Zlatan suited to life in the English top flight? There are several factors that would prohibit his success in the Prem, which are detailed in the video above.

Take a look and be sure to give your thoughts in the comments.
