  • Why the Champions League final is a much bigger deal than the Super Bowl

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 3 days ago

This Saturday, two of the world’s greatest soccer teams will meet at the pinnacle of domestic European competition in the UEFA Champions League final.

The 61st iteration of Europe’s premier club competition will see Real Madrid face its neighbors Atletico Madrid, effectively giving us a replay of the 2014 Champions League final where Los Blancos scooped their much coveted " Decima " (10th European Cup).

The Champions League final is a global behemoth, but how does it compare in stature to America’s biggest annual sporting event – the Super Bowl?

In the video above, I run the numbers to compare and contrast the two types of football. Take a look and be sure to check our 2016 Champions League final preview in the latest FC Yahoo podcast.

The Special One wanted the Old Trafford job when Sir Alex Ferguson departed and reportedly cried when it was offered instead to David Moyes. Now, however, the 53-year-old Portuguese coach appears to have landed his dream gig at the Theatre of Dreams.

Mourinho is synonymous with success, but there are plenty of pitfalls he must avoid. This video details five areas that Mou will need to address during his tenure with the Red Devils in order to be a success. Take a look and be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments.

  • When the FA Cup was great and why it isn't anymore

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 10 days ago

The world’s oldest soccer cup competition will stage its 135th final on Saturday, but sadly, the trophy lost its sheen long ago.

In years gone by, Manchester United’s clash with Crystal Palace would have been met with tremendous fanfare: the build-up would have last weeks and anticipation on the big day at Wembley would reach fever pitch. In fact, this was the exact scenario when the two teams met in a thrilling final in 1990.

However, the FA Cup no longer holds the same magic. In this FC Yahoo video, I look back at happier times for the competition and explain why it no longer enjoys behemoth status.

  • Hakan Calhanoglu: The greatest free kick specialist in the game today

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 10 days ago

It’s February 2014 and Hamburger SV are second from bottom in the Bundesliga. Coach Bert van Marwijk has been relieved of his duties after a disastrous run of eight consecutive defeats in all competitions. On this cold Saturday, a 57,000-capacity crowd fear the worst as title-chasing Borussia Dortmund are in town, ready to inflict further damage to a wounded animal. In their past two meetings, Jurgen Klopp’s side scored a combined 10 goals—they eat Hamburgers for breakfast, so to speak.

Die Rothosen need something special. And boy, do they get it.

Against all odds and expectation, Hamburg are 2-0 up as the game clock clicks past 90 minutes. Then, something truly amazing happens. The home team wins a free kick just outside the centre circle. It’s the kind of free kick that might typically be passed out to a winger, or back to a defender to burn some time and protect a 2-0 win.

But when you have Hakan Çalhanoğlu, one of the best free kick specialist in the game today, that’s not how you handle the situation …

“These are the perfect conditions for a free kick [laughs] OK, you need some talent, too.”

  • Making a case for playoffs in the Premier League

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 17 days ago

Thanks to a certain overachieving side from Leicestershire, it’s been an extraordinary Premier League season. However, the denouement of the English top flight on Sunday is set to be a relatively dull affair: all crucial matters have been settled, with the slightly underwhelming exception of the fourth Champions League spot and the Europa League allocation.

In order to add some excitement and flair to the end of the season, the Premier League needs playoffs. I have proposed a system in which both ends of the table could feature a thrilling playoff – without upsetting the traditional structure of the league.

  • Why La Liga continues to dominate Champions League, Europa League

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 20 days ago

The Premier League may be an unstoppable behemoth in terms of its ability to attract a global audience and generate obscene amounts of cash, but on the field, La Liga has long been the continental king.

This year, we find three Spanish sides in major European finals (it was nearly a whitewash before Liverpool had their say) and La Liga teams have been victorious in 47 of their last 50 knockout games against non-Spanish sides.

So why does Spain reign in the European game? I take a look at the various factors in this FC Yahoo video – take a look and be sure to leave a comment below or get in touch @YahooSoccer.

Unless you have been living under a rock that is impervious to incredibly unlikely sporting triumphs, you will be aware that Leicester City are Premier League champions.

A 5000-1 long shot like that could surely only be witnessed once in a lifetime, but the Foxes’ triumph will almost certainly have inspired many smaller teams to dream bigger. In a Premier League climate where $8 billion TV deals have leveled the playing field to the extent that any club can afford world-class talent, it’s never been more likely for a minnow to “pull a Leicester."

  • Five changes Chelsea must make next season

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 27 days ago

In the 2015-16 season, Chelsea have been, without doubt, one of the most disappointing teams in European soccer. The Blues are destined to finish mid-table and without silverware, which is far below the expectation of a side with their considerable resources and recent track record.

However, with Antonio Conte arriving at Stamford Bridge at the conclusion of Euro 2016, the South London club will have the perfect opportunity to start afresh. Here’s my take on the five issues which Chelsea must prioritize to get back among Europe’s elite sides.

Be sure to leave your thoughts on the Blues' priorities next season in the comments.

  • Who are soccer's biggest underachieving teams right now?

Ryan Bailey at FC Yahoo 1 mth ago

With the notable exception of early-90s Bart Simpson, nobody likes to be called an underachiever. However, that is a label that can be applied fairly liberally in the beautiful game right now. Plenty of teams are punching well below their weight in terms of financial muscle, experience and reputation.

[ Play Yahoo Daily Fantasy Soccer | Premier League scores and schedule ]

I’ve put together a list of the five teams who are truly excelling in the field of failing to meet expectation, which includes a certain blue team from southwest London that has experienced a spectacular fall from grace in this campaign.

Take a look at the list and be sure to leave a comment below.
