MLS released their 2013 schedule on Wednesday, with the eighteenth edition of the league kicking off on March 2nd.

One of the new additions this season is Rivalry Week: in week 3, eight of the nine fixtures will take place between regional adversaries. Seattle will host Portland, Dallas play Houston and so on.

The MLS schedulers appear to have given a knowing wink to the nation's potheads (which I believe is pronounced "po-theeds") with one particular fixture, the Sounders visit to Colorado. It takes place on 4/20, the date commonly associated with cannabis culture.

It's no coincidence that marijuana was legalized in Washington and Colorado on the most recent Election Day, meaning fans of both sides will be able to convene before the match (at 4.20pm) to celebrate, consume, listen to Dave Matthews Band records and remark on how amazing their hands are.

It's also worth noting that MLS headquarters in New York are at 420 5th Ave. COINCIDENCE? Probably!  Either way, don't be surprised if

    • Iker Casillas pinched Ronaldo’s butt at the Ballon d’Or awards

Brazilian legend Ronaldo had a delightfully amorous evening at the Ballon d'Or awards on Monday. Not only did he get to kiss the snout of an armadillo (that's not a euphemism), but he felt the extremely talented hand of Iker Casillas on his derriere as he gave an interview on the red carpet.

It's not clear if Casillas and fiancée Sara Carbonero regularly deliver unsolicited butt gropes during media events, but it certainly sparks a new theory for his fallout with Jose Mourinho...

    • DTotD: Referee and linesman badly beaten during match in Chile

Prepare to fall off your seat in a catatonic state of shock: there has been some disgraceful on-field violence at a match in South America!

An amateur final match between Baquedano and Pablo Lizama in Melipilla, Chile was called off by the referee following repeated stoppages for rough play and interruptions from angry fans. Unhappy at the postponement, players and supporters (both male and female) proceeded to brutally attack the officials.

Things really start to kick off at [1.24] in the video above, when one of the Pablo Lizama players delivers a flying kick to the ref.

According to local English-language news site I Love Chile, one of the linesman lost several teeth in the brawl. Jorrit Smink, a former Baquedano coach, told the site:

“Unfortunately, football has too many players like this. In Holland, an assistant referee was murdered by some young players. The surprising thing is that the only people who work at FIFA are mafia types and complete idiots. That works from the top

    • Despite being nominated for the Best Men's Coach award at the Ballon d'Or 2012, Jose Mourinho decided not to travel to Switzerland for the ceremony. On Saturday, the Real Madrid manager claimed he would not attend because he needed to prepare for  Wednesday evening's Copa del Rey round of 16 second leg clash with Celta Vigo, in which Los Blancos must overcome a 2-1 deficit.

Madrid-based newspaper Diario AS, however, have called that excuse first-class bullhonkey, as The Special One was not working at his office at the Ciudad Real Madrid training ground on Monday evening. Instead, he was spotted at nearby CD Canillas watching his son play.

According to AS, he arrived at around 7.45pm flanked by two bodyguards (who tried to hide him when they noticed the newspaper's presence) and stayed for around an hour.

Mou's snub has set Spanish tongues wagging, with most asserting his relationship with Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and various other squad members is so frayed, that he couldn't bare

    • AC Milan continued their preparation for the second half of the Serie A season by visiting Italian fourth-tier side Pro Patria for a friendly on Thursday.

Disappointingly, a section of the crowd hurled racial abuse at the Rossoneri's black players from the onset. Despite multiple pleas from players and the stadium announcer to stop, the racist chanting continued and Kevin-Prince Boateng vented his fury by picking up the ball and kicking it at the fans in the 26th minute.

After this disruption, a visibly furious Boateng pulled off his shirt and left the pitch, along with players from both sides.

Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri was quoted by The Independent:

"We are disappointed and saddened by what has happened.

"Milan play for the right to respect all players. We need to stop these uncivilised gestures.

"We are sorry for all the other fans who came here for a beautiful day of sport. We promise to return, and we are sorry for the club and players of Pro Patria, but we could not make

Stoke have lost all five of their Premier League visits to the Etihad Stadium, conceding fourteen goals and scoring none in the process.

Prior to their encounter on New Year's Day, Manchester City helped ensure another walkover by moving the advertising hoardings around the field as close to the touchline as possible. Not only did this delight the advertisers, but it stopped Stoke launching their trademark long throw-ins, meaning the Potters had to resort to less direct methods of breaking into the opposition box.

City aren't the first side to pull this kind of home court advantage against Stoke — and they apparently did it before last season's match too — but one would think that worth around £360m more than their Staffordshire rivals would be advantageous enough.

    • Rio Ferdinand may be the king of pranking footballers for televisual entertainment, but our friends in Spain have taken a leaf from his Big Book of Merks with a stunt at Radamel Falcao's expense.

Each festive season, Spanish TV station La1 broadcasts a live charity telethon called 'Gala Inocente, Inocente'. In a bit on Friday night's edition -- recorded shortly after Falcao smashed five past Deportivo La Coruña -- his Atletico Madrid teammate Adrian (who is in on the prank) accompanies the Colombian to take a test drive of a €450,000 Ferrari Spider [1.05 in the video].

The Atleti strikers then take the pricey sports car to a restaurant in Boadilla del Monte, a small town within Madrid [5.50]. While Falcao eats a delicious meal wearing a sports jacket he must have borrowed from an elderly teacher, the Ferrari is driven away [8.38], and the space in which he parked is made to look like a space reserved for cars that are due to be crushed and recycled. Uh-oh spaghetti-os!

    • Sunderland suspend season tickets of fans who stand up during games

      (twitter.com)(twitter.com)

Rival fans at Premier League games have mocked one another with chants of "Sit down, shut up!" for many years, but now it appears the clubs have started issuing similar instructions to their own paying customers.

Due to an "increasing number of complaints," Sunderland has suspended the season tickets of many supporters who ruin the match day experience by standing throughout the game.

The club issues a warning on its website — mainly directed at those who stand at the Stadium of Light's South Stand — and persistent offenders have now have their seats taped up. Punishing those who stand too often by reducing their chances of sitting down, after all, makes perfect sense.

The Guardian quotes Sunderland head of safety and security Paul Weir:

"We certainly don't wish to spoil the enjoyment of any supporters, we want a vibrant lively matchday atmosphere just as much as the fans do, but we also have legal obligations that we must be seen to be adhering to.

"We also have a duty of care to all

    • While most Bundesliga clubs enjoy close links with their fans thanks to their ownership structures, FC Union Berlin share a particularly unique relationship with their loyal followers.

In 2008, supporters of the 2. Bundesliga side donated 140,000 hours of their time to help modernize their home, the Stadion An der Alten Försterei ("Stadium near the old Forester's house"). In 2004, they even sold their own blood to cover a €1.5m debt in order to keep their professional status.

On Sunday, thousands of Eiserne fans gathered on the terraces of the stadium they helped build to sing and drink for 90 minutes. This sounds like a typical occurrence, except for the fact that it is currently the winter break in Germany and there are no games.

Fans were gathering for the tenth annual Christmas event, a tradition that sees thousands of Union Berliners drink Glühwein (mulled wine), wave candles around, light flares (obviously) and belt out a combination of Christmas tunes and football chants.

    • Pastore's Audi R8: not allowed near Zlatan's ride (sportune.fr)Pastore's Audi R8: not allowed near Zlatan's ride (sportune.fr)

It was only a matter of time until the egomania of the PSG "project" spilled into the parking lot, and that day has now come.

At Paris-Saint-Germain's Camp des Loges training ground, there are two parking lots: one in which players have individually assigned spaces, and another closer to the entrance of the facility reserved for executives and club officials.

Since Zlatan Ibrahimovic will not be constrained by any man's predetermined parking arrangements and no one dares to question him, he is allowed to park in the executive lot.

According to several news outlets, Javier Pastore tried to park his €160,000 Audi R8 Spyder in Zlatan's special parking zone on Wednesday, but was promptly denied entry by security staff. Apparently furious, the midfielder performed a U-turn and drove into a gate on his way back to his regular space. Translated from Sportune.fr:
