  • Miami RB Duke Johnson announces he's heading to NFL draft

Nick Bromberg at Dr. Saturday 42 mins ago

Miami running back Duke Johnson won't stick around for his senior season.

A day after the Hurricanes lost to South Carolina in the Independence Bowl, Johnson announced that he'd be heading to the NFL draft. "I will be going to the NFL next year," Johnson said via "I think at this stage in my life, I'm at the stage in the NFL where backs don't get too much value. I think it's best and get a jump while I can. It's what is best for me and my family."

He also said the decision was for his grandmother, a woman who has been an integral part of Johnson's life.

"At the end of the day everything I do is for her and my grandmother who has sacrificed so much," Johnson said. "This decision is made for them, too, just to help them out and put them in the best situation."

Johnson finishes his career with 3.519 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns. He had 1,652 yards in 2014 and 10 touchdowns. He likely would have close to 4,000 career yards if it wasn't for a broken ankle he suffered against Florida State in 2013. The injury ended his season.

  • Russell Athletic Bowl: Trevor Knight's presence should boost Oklahoma

Nick Bromberg at Dr. Saturday 2 hrs ago

Russell Athletic Bowl Oklahoma (8-4) vs. Clemson (9-3) Orlando, Fla. Dec. 29, 2014

It's dejå vu all over again for Oklahoma QB Trevor Knight.

Last year, Knight became the darling of the 2013 bowl season with his performance against Alabama. As the Sooners upset the Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl, Knight was 32-44 passing for 348 yards, four touchdowns and a lone interception.

It was Knight's best performance of his young career and came as he was wrangling the starting quarterback job away from Blake Bell, who moved to tight end in 2014. Oh, and it also set up some unrealistic expectations for Knight's 2014 season.

And they were expectations that he unsurprisingly didn't fill. Before he suffered an incredibly frightening neck injury against Baylor, Knight was in the midst of a productive yet not spectacular campaign. While his stats didn't look horrible -- his one really bad game came against TCU -- there seemed to be frequent moments of longing from Oklahoma fans. Knight was playing well, but he could also play better.

    Vegas odds: Oklahoma (-4)

  • Liberty Bowl: West Virginia and Texas A&M should throw the ball a lot

Nick Bromberg at Dr. Saturday 3 hrs ago

AutoZone Liberty Bowl Texas A&M (7-5) vs. West Virginia (7-5) Memphis, Tenn. Dec. 29, 2014

Do you like offense? If you do, you are obligated to watch this game if you're off work or record it if you're going to be away from a television. If there was ever a bowl game this season that promises points, the Liberty Bowl is it.

Of course, that paragraph means we could very likely see a 14-13 finish, but we're betting against it. Each team has scored 20 or fewer points just twice this season. For Texas A&M, it was the embarrassing shutout at Alabama and a 23-17 loss to LSU in the last game of the regular season. West Virginia's two worst offensive efforts came at Texas and against Kansas State.

The Mountaineers enter at No. 9 in the country in passing yards. Texas A&M is No. 12. The respective defenses are basically the same, at least in the yardage category. Texas A&M is ranked No. 62 in passing defense, a half-yard better (225.5) than No. 63 West Virginia.

This game should be fun. And possibly take four hours. So schedule that DVR extra time liberally.

    Vegas odds: West Virginia (-1.5)

  • Jim Harbaugh reportedly heading to Michigan

Nick Bromberg at Dr. Saturday 3 hrs ago

San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh will reportedly be the next coach of the Michigan Wolverines.

According to CSN Bay Area, Harbaugh has agreed to be Michigan's coach.

Confirmed: Harbaugh to Michigan! Press Conference Tues in Ann Arbor

Harbaugh's move to Michigan was first tweeted by John U. Bacon on Saturday night. Bacon, a professor at Michigan, is the author of "Fourth and Long," a book about college football.

I just got off the phone with more sources tonight. It's done. Jim Harbaugh is coming to Michigan - and his friends are flying in Monday.

How do I know this? From his friends who are flying in.

Michigan officials were in the San Francisco Bay Area over the weekend to meet with Harbaugh in the hopes of securing his services as the Wolverines' next head coach. The 49ers play the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

According to Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman, Harbaugh's family is flying into Ann Arbor on Monday.

Hoke's record in his four seasons at Michigan was 31-20. Harbaugh was 29-21 in four years at Stanford before taking the 49ers job.

  • There's reportedly serious tension between Kyle Whittingham and Utah's AD

Nick Bromberg at Dr. Saturday 14 hrs ago

Could the Kyle Whittingham era be coming to an end at Utah?

According to the Salt Lake City Tribune's Gordon Monson, Whittingham is currently at odds with Utah athletic director Chris Hill. Monson's column, published Saturday night, comes after offensive coordinator Dave Christensen reportedly left to be Texas A&M's offensive line coach and run game coordinator and defensive coordinator and associate head coach Kalani Sitake left to take the same position at Oregon State.

Here's the beginning of Monson's article, which is a must read for Utah fans or fans of the Pac-12

After months of magma buildup, a volcanic blast is sheering the top off of Utah football, spewing rocks a mile high, triggering mudslides, leveling forests, choking off life as we know it there.

Sending Kyle Whittingham packing as the Utes’ head coach.

    That’s right: He’s walking away.

Another thing I believe: This story is far from over and the blast zone will grow bigger and bigger as time goes by.

  • N.C. State holds on to beat UCF 34-27

Nick Bromberg at Dr. Saturday 1 day ago

There will be no 10-win season for Central Florida.

N.C. State scored twice in the third quarter to turn a 17-10 halftime lead into a 31-13 margin at the beginning of the fourth and held on for a 34-27 win in the Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl.

Had UCF won, the Knights would have had at least 10 wins in each of the last three seasons. Instead, N.C. State got its eighth win of the season, the most the program has had since 2011.

The Wolfpack piled up 486 yards of offense on UCF's defense, which entered the game third in the country in total defense at 283 yards per game. The Knights couldn't stop N.C. State's passing attack, which picked up huge chunks of yardage. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett finished 15-of-26 passing for 262 yards and a touchdown.

Brissett, however, wasn't the only one who did damage throwing the ball. The Wolfpack's first score of the game came on a pass from running back Shadrach Thornton to receiver Jaylen Samuels for an 18-yard touchdown. And in the second half, Brissett caught a 20-yard pass from receiver Bo Hines.

Thornton finished with 96 yards rushing and Matt Dayes had 78 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

  • Rutgers routs North Carolina in Quick Lane Bowl

Nick Bromberg at Dr. Saturday 1 day ago

Well, the Quick Lane Bowl went about as was expected for North Carolina's defense. It's just that the Tar Heel offense couldn't keep up with Rutgers' offense as the Scarlet Knights moved to 8-5 with a 40-21 win over UNC.

If you're looking for an encapsulation of North Carolina's day, just watch this GIF of Rutgers' extra point attempt after the Scarlet Knights' fourth touchdown of the game. Even when North Carolina looked like it was about to do something right it still went awry – make sure you watch the football that was most definitely not blocked.

Rutgers' quarterback Gary Nova finished with 184 yards passing and two touchdowns (and no interceptions) and opened the scoring with a touchdown pass to a wide-open Andre Patton from 34 yards out.

But it was the Rutgers ground attack that really gashed UNC. Rutgers finished with 340 yards rushing as Josh Hicks and Robert Martin both had 19 carries. Hicks piled up 202 yards and a touchdown while Martin finished with 100 yards and two scores.
