  • Kauffman: Car count for CGR and MWR in future isn't finalized

Nick Bromberg at From The Marbles 16 mins ago

Michael Waltrip Racing co-owner Rob Kauffman spoke publicly Saturday for the first time since his purchase of part of Chip Ganassi Racing was announced earlier in the week. After saying that he and Waltrip were close friends and business partners, Kauffman said his purchase was an "integration" rather than a step away from MWR.

"... So any idea that like I'm leaving or taking anything is misplaced," Kauffman said. "What we're actually doing is integrating the businesses, trying to get the most competitive product on track, the best for all of our partners and that's really our focus." "It's a competitive business, as everybody knows. It's competitive on track as well as off track. The focus we're really trying to get to get this news out was to get it out of the way because rumors were bubbling and try and be as clear as we can and refocus everybody on 2015 and hopefully getting one or two cars in the Chase and doing a great job with our partners."

  • Guess who? Kyle Busch wins pole at Pocono

Nick Bromberg at From The Marbles 20 hrs ago

Kyle Busch is now winning things he isn't sure he's going to win.

Busch, who has won four of the last five Sprint Cup Series races, posted the fastest lap (178.416 MPH) in the third round of Friday's qualifying session at Pocono and will start first for Sunday's race.

"I told you that I had a fast car, I just wasn't sure we could get the balance of it right," Busch said. "There right at the end, that last run, was the best it's been all day."

Busch unseated Joey Logano for the top spot in qualifying and survived a fast lap by Kevin Harvick, the only other driver to post a lap over 178 MPH. Logano starts third while Austin Dillon starts fourth and Tony Stewart starts fifth.

Harvick posted the fastest lap of the second round while Stewart was fastest in the first round.

Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Brad Keselowski and Jeff Gordon round out the top 10.

If Kyle Busch wins at Pocono and gets his fifth win in six races, it'd be his first win at the 2.5-mile triangle. Busch has eight top-10 finishes in 21 starts at the track. He won the pole there in 2010 and finished second to teammate Denny Hamlin.

  • Mark Helfrich: '100 percent' confidence in QB Jeff Lockie

Nick Bromberg at Dr. Saturday 22 hrs ago

Vernon Adams is considered the favorite to win Oregon's quarterback job in 2015. Ducks coach Mark Helfrich doesn't want to publicly discount Jeff Lockie, either.

Lockie served as the backup to Marcus Mariota in 2014 as the Ducks went to the National Championship and Mariota won the Heisman.

“He knows our system better than anybody on the team,” Helfrich said via the Eugene Register-Guard. “I have total confidence in Jeff, 100 percent. Our players do, too. That’s probably the more important part.”

Running back Royce Freeman said echoed Helfrich's sentiments.

“Lockie is very intelligent as a quarterback,” sophomore running back Royce Freeman said. “He knows a lot of the plays, the ins and outs of them, he hardly has any faults within the offense. He’s the guy I go to if I have any questions. If any rookie has any questions, they go to Lockie.

“He’s stepping up in a leadership role and he’s the guy we look at, so far in the offseason, to help us.”

  • Rich Rodriguez has a story about Mike Leach and a speedo (Video)

Nick Bromberg at Dr. Saturday 23 hrs ago

Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez is going to give you a mental image that you may never be able to erase from your brain.

Rodriguez was on the Pac-12 Network during media days on Friday and relayed a story of watching Mike Leach swimming. We won't spoil it, because it fits the caricature that the Washington State coach can be at times.

    dir="ltr" lang="en">ICYMI: @CoachRodAZ just recalled the time he watched @Coach_Leach surface from a lagoon. No Joke. #Pac12fb— Pac-12 Networks (@Pac12Networks) July 31, 2015

We're anxiously awaiting Leach's version of the story. And yes, we wonder what the reactions of Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden were to seeing Leach come out of the lagoon.

  • Clint Bowyer issues statement amidst uncertainty at MWR

Nick Bromberg at From The Marbles 1 day ago

As the future of Michael Waltrip Racing is unknown, Clint Bowyer made a statement after Friday's practice at Pocono.

Bowyer has been mentioned as possibly switching teams before the 2016 season as MWR co-owner Rob Kauffman has purchased part of Chip Ganassi Racing. Without Kauffman's funding – he owned 50 percent of MWR – the future of MWR looks tenuous. The team does not have a manufacturer deal signed for 2016. It also doesn't have a driver for the No. 55 car or a sponsor as the contract of Aaron's is up at the end of the year.

Bowyer, who recently signed an extension with MWR along with sponsor 5-Hour Energy, could go to Ganassi and be a teammate to Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray.

    From Fox Sports:

Bowyer's car is sponsored by Maxwell House for Sunday's race.

MWR currently fields Toyotas. Ed Laukes, a vice president of marketing for the car company, issued a brief statement about the situation.

  • Big Ten mandates Power 5 foe, no FCS opponents in 2016

Nick Bromberg at Dr. Saturday 1 day ago

Big Ten teams are officially disallowed from playing non-FBS schools starting in 2016.

The conference outlined its new scheduling guidelines on Friday. In addition to eliminating games against FCS-level opponents, Big Ten schools are required to play a non-conference game against a Power Five opponent.

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today!]

“We have something called 1910," Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said about the school's scheduling plan to begin next year. We think we have come up with a conference plan. We have one championship game, we have nine conference games. We have one intersectional game vs. an autonomous opponent and we have zero games vs. FCS. They are all vs. FBS starting in 2016.”

BYU and Notre Dame will count as Power Five schools.

  • Report: Louisville and Alabama to open 2018 in Orlando

Nick Bromberg at Dr. Saturday 1 day ago

Alabama will be involved in another marquee season-opening game.

According to ESPN, the Crimson Tide will play Louisville to start the 2018 season in Orlando.

Alabama is starting the 2015 season at Wisconsin in AT&T Stadium in Dallas. It plays in 2016 at the same site against USC. And in 2017 the Tide are playing Florida State at the Georgia Dome. The game against Louisville will be the Tide's seventh-straight neutral site game to open the season.

Louisville hasn't been a slouch when it comes to scheduling big games to open the season either. The Cardinals are playing Auburn in Atlanta to start the 2015 season and are playing Purdue in Indianapolis in 2017. The 2019 season also begins a with the first game of a home-and-home series with Notre Dame. The Irish have a scheduling affiliation with the ACC.

  • Taxidermied chipmunks act out Michigan vs. Michigan State

Nick Bromberg at Dr. Saturday 1 day ago

Have you ever wanted to have 26 taxidermied chipmunks on prominent display in your house? Are you a Michigan State fan? Boy, do we have a deal for you.

Taxidermist Nick Saade has taken the formerly live chipmunks and put them on display on a football field. 11 chipmunks have Michigan State helmets and 11 have Michigan helmets. Four more will be officials.

We swear, we're not making this up. Because how could we make this up? There's a reason this appeals to Michigan State fans more than Michigan fans too.

Dead chipmunks a different take on MSU-UM rivalry

    From the Lansing State Journal:

“MSU is just about to score the winning touchdown,” he explains when asked about his tableau that will soon be completed when outfits for four referees are finished.

UM players look “kind of cool but everybody knows MSU is better — even the chipmunks.”

“I’m going to have as much fun as I possibly can, then sooner or later it will end up for sale.”

  • Jim Harbaugh brought a Mike Ditka jersey to Big Ten media days

Nick Bromberg at Dr. Saturday 1 day ago

Jim Harbaugh had a jersey with him at the podium Friday at Big Ten media days. It was not a Michigan jersey either.

Harbaugh displayed the jersey of former Chicago Bears tight end and coach Mike Ditka. He said he had dinner with Ditka Thursday night at Ditka's steakhouse. Big Ten media days are in Chicago.

Harbaugh, a first round pick in 1987, played quarterback for the Bears under Ditka. We're also not surprised in the slightest that he brought a prop to the podium.

He did not get the jersey autographed, however.

  • Ohio State trademarks Urban Meyer's name

Nick Bromberg at Dr. Saturday 1 day ago

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer's name is now trademarked.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, Ohio State has trademarked "Urban Meyer" and "Urban Meyer Knows." The trademarks were granted on July 7.

Half of the royalties in those cases will go to Ohio State and the other half to Meyer, who plans to funnel such funds to a family foundation.

“It’s not uncommon for celebrities and people in the public to seek protection of their name and likeness,” said Rick Van Brimmer, director of trademark and licensing services at Ohio State.

Van Brimmer also told the Dispatch it was the first time that the school had trademarked a coach's name.
