  • RG3 and Gruden may get a do over in 2015

It’s starting to look more and more like both Robert Griffin III and Jay Gruden will be employed by the Washington Redskins in 2015.

During the Redskins’ radio pregame show before they played the Giants, Sonny Jurgensen repeated something that Dan Snyder had told him a few weeks earlier. “He's a 24 year old kid,” said Snyder via Jurgensen. “He deserves a chance to come back and win the job.”

Griffin is under contract for 2015 at a fully guaranteed salary of $3.3 million.

And now we have multiple reports that Gruden will be back as the head coach. While it would have made no sense to fire Gruden with four years and some $16 million in guaranteed money left on his contract, the confirmation was needed because, well, the organization has a history of doing things that don’t make sense.

So perhaps Griffin will benefit from being forced to earn the job in a competition. Quarterback battles do have their drawbacks. Offseason and training camp reps are limited and splitting them between two or more players makes the winner of the competition less prepared. But sometimes the benefits outweigh the drawbacks and that may well be the case here.

  • Panthers, Capitals make history with 20-round shootout

All right, everyone. You can now officially resume the debate about three-on-three overtime as a way to decide NHL games instead of the shootout.

It took 20 rounds – yes, you read that correctly – for a winner to be decided in Tuesday’s game between the Florida Panthers and Washington Capitals. Finally, Nick Bjugstad scored the winner in the 20th round, which sets a new National Hockey League record and the Panthers eventually did come away with a 2-1 victory.

Bjugstad was also Florida’s second shooter, way, way back at the start of this lengthy skills competition.

    Eventually something had to give.

  • Bears likely to fire Marc Trestman after year, report says

The Marc Trestman experiment reportedly will be ending, soon.

According to Dan Bernstein of WSCR in Chicago, Bears ownership met in the wake of Monday night’s 31-15 home loss to the Saints. Per Bernstein, the team “likely” will fold the tents on the Trestman regime. It’s not known whether the Bears also will be parting ways with the man who hired Trestman, G.M. Phil Emery.

The Trestman hire was unconventional, to say the least. A long-time NFL assistant who was a candidate for head-coaching jobs but never hired eventually left the pro game after the 2004 season for N.C. State, where he served as offensive coordinator. After two years with the Wolfpack and a season out of football, Trestman became the head coach of the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes.

After five years in Canada, Emery decided to give Trestman a try. His laid-back, professorial style hasn’t gotten the most out of his players, especially with the locker room devoid of vocal leaders.

  • Grizzlies stop Warriors' win streak at 16

The Warriors were off to a ridiculous 21-2 start to the season, but few expected that to continue on Tuesday night in Memphis.

The Grizzlies were 19-4 overall themselves, and possessed the league’s best home record coming into this one. And, with Golden State missing its defensive anchor in Andrew Bogut, the belief was that Memphis would have a relatively easy time ending the Warriors’ winning ways.

While it was more difficult than expected, Memphis came away with the 105-98 victory, one which snapped Golden State’s 16-game winning streak.

The Grizzlies took control of this one early in the second quarter, with a 20-0 run sparked by their bench.Vince Carter led the way with 11 in the period, while guys like Jon Leuer and Beno Udrih were efficient in running the Memphis offense to get easy looks at the basket.
