Longtime 76ers center Darryl Dawkins died Thursday at the age of 58.

The cause of death is unknown.

A Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest spokesperson confirmed to Comcast SportsNet that Dawkins died there on Thursday.

One of the most popular players in the history of the Sixers franchise and the NBA, Dawkins was the first player drafted by an NBA team straight out of high school when he left Maynard Evans High in Orlando, Fla. for the Sixers as the No. 5 overall pick in the 1975 draft.

The FedEx Cup Playoffs begin this week at The Barclays, the first in a series of four exclusive, dwinddling-field events. Jordan Spieth currently leads the points list, but he's not a lock to win as points reset during the playoffs. Billy Horschelclaimed the $10 million bonus last year, after starting in 69th position. Who will hit the jackpot this year? Our writers offer up their picks.

With apologies to Jordan Spieth, who by all accounts has enjoyed a season for the ages, it will beJim Furyk who collects the FedEx Cup and $10 million bounty next month at East Lake.

The last five cup champions won the PGA Tour finale and few, if any, have a better history at East Lake than Furyk.

  • Steelers signing Michael Vick came with much debate

The Steelers have signed Mike Vick to be the backup to Ben Roethlisberger. Vick claims that, a year after he failed to accept that role behind Geno Smith with the Jets, Vick is ready to embrace his new football reality.

“I admit that I didn’t do it as well as I wanted to, because in my mind the position I was in was supposed to be different,” Vick said Wednesday, via Will Graves of the  Associated Press . “But I think you’ve got to accept it first. I think I’ve been able to do that and come to grips with it, and my role is clear.”

Last year, when Vick apparently believed he should have been playing instead of Smith, Vick didn’t commit himself to preparing for the possibility that he’d be playing in any given week. And it showed when he played against the Chargers.

  • Russell Wilson's recovery drinks open can of worms

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is entitled to believe whatever he wants to believe about the healing powers of Recovery Water. He’s not entitled to share those beliefs with the rest of the world, if his beliefs can’t be corroborated with scientific fact.

As an investor and  de facto  celebrity endorser in the product, Wilson is bound by the rules of the Federal Trade Commission, which prevent a celebrity endorser from saying things that the manufacturer of the product couldn’t say directly.

“Advertisers are subject to liability for false or unsubstantiated statements made through endorsements,” FTC guidelines promulgated in 2009 state. “Endorsers also may be liable for statements made in the course of their endorsements.”

Few if any are likely taking Wilson’s claims seriously, but plenty of outlandish claims have been made over the years regarding the attributes of a given product — and plenty of people have bought the product assuming the claim to be true.

Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who took the league by storm in 2014 as a rookie, is now facing the consequences of his sudden success. Within his own team, he’s having to learn how to deal with ribbing. When playing other teams, he may have to learn how to deal with hits to the ribs.

Giants receiver Victor Cruz’s believes that Jaguars defensive backs targeted Beckham during a Week Two preseason game. Beckham was asked whether he agrees with Cruz during a Tuesday visit to ESPN New York’s  The Michael Kay Show .

Beckham later said he’d prefer that players make plays on the ball, not plays on the player trying to catch the ball.

  • Marshawn Lynch fined again, but why keep it under wraps?

Marshawn Lynch was fined for not speaking to the media more than we thought last year after news surfaced another fine was never previously reported or disclosed, but why not?

As the 2015 regular season approaches, there will be plenty of talk about whether Seahawks running backMarshawn Lynch will talk to the media after games. There also will be some talk about past failures to talk during a hearing on his latest fine for not talking.

Per a league source, Lynch has finally heard from the NFL about scheduling a hearing regarding a $75,000 fine imposed on him for not talking to the media after the NFC Championship Game against the Packers. If you don’t recall hearing about a $75,000 fine imposed on Lynch for not talking to the media after the NFC Championship Game, there’s a good reason for that. The fine had never been previously reported nor disclosed.

A $75,000 fine was indeed imposed, and the hearing will be occurring as the next wave of opportunities to ignore the media after games that count approaches.

The Steelers are in need of quarterback insurance, and that’s why Michael Vick is scheduled to visit with the team on Tuesday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported Vick’s visit. The Steelers have to explore options because veteran backup Bruce Gradkowski suffered a left-hand injury in last weekend’s preseason game that will require surgery.

    NFL 2015 Football Schedule

The Steelers play this Saturday, Aug. 29, at Buffalo, then close the preseason Sept. 3. They open the season in 16 days at New England, meaning Gradkowski is facing a tight window for getting back to health.

  • Is Jay Gruden setting up RG3 to fail? No. 2 QB could be vital; who will it be?

Anyone watching last Thursday's Redskins win over the Lions saw that QB Robert Griffin III took a number of big hits. In fact, Griffin was blasted on six of his eight drop backs, an absurd number for a team trying to get its starting offense preseason work.

    NFL 2015 Football Schedule

The factors involved seem obvious: a new right side of the offensive line with basically no NFL experience, and a journeyman left tackle injury replacement that is not a starting caliber player. Add the O-line woes to an aggressive Detroit front, and there is a bad recipe for RG3. Combine that with Griffin's struggles in the pocket, and an injury seems almost predetermined.

What is known is Griffin got hurt. What remains a mystery is when, and specifically what play, saw Griffin concussed.

"I don’t know. Can’t tell you," Redskins coach Jay Gruden said when asked what play resulted in RG3's concussion.
