    • Tuffies: Recap and Awards for Episode 8 of the Ultimate Fighter

What does vodka, communist Poland and soccer have in common? Besides World Cup Football? This week's episode of the Ultimate Fighter, of course! Awards and spoilers are after the jump.

Looking back at the last fight between Phillipe Nover and Dave Kaplan, Kaplan's game plan of taking a few punches and trying to outlast Phillipe did not work. Kaplan ended up tapping out in the first round, so clearly, he needs more working on strategizing for a fight. Phillipe believes he sent a message to the other lightweights in the house.

Krzystof is scheduled to fight next, but his hand is not in good shape. Don House, a boxing trainer, came in to check it out and he thinks K (as he will heretofore be called) will be fine. Foreshadowing?

At the house, Kaplan starts drinking with Tom Lawlor. He starts with shots of vodka -- my favorite! -- and shenanigans ensure. Kaplan calls out everyone in the house, prides himself in the fact that he has never been knocked out (though he has been tapped out not

    • Predictions, beyond pain, for UFC 91

This is one of the weirder pay-per-view fight cards that the UFC has put together in a while. Much like Brock Lesnar, it is top-heavy. At the same time, I think that the main event will entertain us enough that we won't mind the $44.95.

Dustin Hazelett vs. Tamdan McCrory: This fight was just elevated to the televised card after Amir Sadollah had to pull out of his fight with Nick Catone due to a leg infection. MMA Rated is calling this fight the Revenge of the Nerds, and I can't think of a better name for it. Can you think of two guys who are geekier-looking? McCrory is described by the UFC as awkwardly strong. Hazelett has the flexibility of a 12 16-year-old Chinese gymnast. This fight will go to the ground, and I'm betting that we see some bizarre submission attempts, and equally bizarre attempts to get out of them. My pick is Hazelett by an arm bar.

Nate Quarry vs. Demian Maia: Nate Quarry can win this fight if he stays on his feet. Going to the ground with Maia is suicide, as

    • MMA Marketplace: A shirt that could get you beat up

Kurt Angle famously called Brock Lesnar a mental midget, and now you can wear that sentiment on your heart. You just may not want to wear it around Brock. Available in eight colors at Cafe Press for $23.99.

    • Matt Hughes gullible but not racist

I'll be honest. Matt Hughes is by far not my favorite fighter, and there are many issues that he and I disagree on. But when I saw the picture on Bloody Elbow of him holding up a shirt from a white supremacy group, it just didn't seem right.

It wasn't. The shirt was given to Hughes to sign at an autograph signing, and if you've ever attended one of those, you know that they can be like a cattle call. The celeb signs, smiles and then moves onto the next fan. Hughes probably should have looked a little more closely at the shirt he was signing, but that is where his culpability ends.

After the picture went public, the leaders of the "White Boy Society" said that Hughes held up the shirt because he was asked, and the society wanted to show it off for MMA fans who are also part of the group. It wasn't meant to imply that Hughes endorsed the group. Right. You take a well-known conservative in Hughes, throw him a white power shirt, post that picture on the internet, and then try to tell us

    • Werdum unemployed, Vera employed

Let me get this straight. Fabricio Werdum is out of a job, and Brandon Vera is still on the UFC's roster?

I was definitely surprised by Werdum at UFC 90. He looked out of shape at weigh-ins, and of course was knocked out by UFC newcomer Junior Dos Santos. But before that, he was considered an up-and-coming heavyweight. After dropping his UFC debut to Andrei Arlovski, he TKO'ed Vera and Gabriel Gonzaga for which he was paid a base of $80,000.

Brandon Vera has been the anointed one since he beat Frank Mir at UFC 65. Looking back, Mir was not at his best after getting in a car accident, so the win may not have meant as much as we thought when it happened. Vera then went onto lose in sluggish fights against Tim Sylvia and Werdum. He slimmed down for a fight against Keith Jardine at light heavyweight , but still looked lethargic in the loss. His base pay was $100,000 for the losses, $40,000 for the win over Mir.

Werdum supposedly was sent packing because his contract renegotiations fell

    • Brock Lesnar likes to train with sticks

Apparently, Brock Lesnar trains in the confines of a music video set.

Of course, this is from his WWE days -- he doesn't have the phallic tattoo on his chest -- and he has to worry more about cutting weight these days than piling on the muscle. Still, it's interesting to see some of his more unorthodox training methods. We'll see if they help him at all this weekend at UFC 91 against Randy Couture.

    • The week that was in MMA

Paulo Filho's bizarre behavior at WEC 36, both coming in overweight and refusing to engage Chael Sonnen, perplexed the MMA world this week. One thing seems unquestioned: Filho's problems extend far beyond the Octagon, and he really needs to take care of them before he even thinks about fighting again.

Urijah Faber lost his WEC belt after making a small mistake against Mike Brown.

Before beating Jens Pulver, Leonard Garcia performed the Keith Jardine Nipple Tweak. That moved the nipple tweak record to 4-0.

From the law and order department, Chris Leben was suspended for testing positive for steroids after UFC 89, and Hermes Franca was nabbed for a DUI in Florida. Drunk driving? People are still doing that? It's called a cab. Look into it.

After the most disgusting Ultimate Fighter ever, Fightlinker begs for a change in the show. I have to agree. This week's show put me over the edge. We barely saw any training, and the fight was short. The rest of the airtime was filled with nonsense

    • The myth of 'getting caught'

Last night, after Urijah Faber was surprisingly TKO'ed by Mike Brown, telecaster Frank Mir said several times that Faber "got caught." It's a popular explanation when a seemingly more talented fighter loses to a less talented fighter. Chuck Liddell got caught by Rampage Jackson and Rashad Evans. Chael Sonnen got caught by Paulo Filho in their first fight. Even on the Ultimate Fighter, C.B. Dollaway got caught by Amir Sadollah.

It is also a load of bull.

The words "got caught," in the passive voice, implies that the losing fighter is not to blame. Right. It wasn't Faber's fault that he lost concentration, became frustrated by Brown, and charged right into the elbow that Brown was throwing. I'm not buying it.

It also takes some glory away from the victor. Rashad Evans should be given credit for his knockout of Liddell, much like Brown deserves kudos this morning after beating Faber and winning the WEC featherweight belt. Both fighters stuck with their gameplans and recognized an
