Kenny Florian's convincing win over Joe Stevenson ensured that he will have a shot at the lightweight belt. But when? Current lightweight champ B.J. Penn will fight Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight title on January 31, 2009. This means that Penn won't be available to fight again until April, at the earliest. Matt Hughes mentioned that he will fight Matt Serra in mid-April. Perhaps Penn-Florian could headline the card.

A layoff like this is not odd for Florian. After choking out Din Thomas in September of 2007, he didn't fight again until he TKO'ed Joe Lauzon in April of this year. He had no trouble shaking off the cage rust and winning, and then going on to two great wins -- a decision against Roger Huerta and Saturday's win over Stevenson -- later this year.

Fans, on the other hand, aren't quite as patient. One blogger thinks that the title fight will not happen because the UFC will force Florian into a fight before his bout with Penn. Posters at different forums discussing

    • Bio, Algebra, ground and pound? MMA at high school in Mass

Mixed martial arts has experienced an explosion of popularity in the past few years, and that has reached children and teenagers. Many gyms now offer youth training. Xtreme Couture has a kids club that meets three times a week at its Las Vegas location, and Overtime MMA in Naperville, Ill. gives a special rate for children. Now, MMA has a home at a high school in Winchester, Mass.

Winchester High School has a mixed martial arts club run by students. The group meets a few times a week, has guest instructors that help out from time to time and is financed due to the fund raising of an industrious senior. The school will not let students hit each other in the head, but other than that, it's a safe place where kids can practice MMA.

I applaud the school administration for being open-minded and allowing their students to use try MMA. For one, a club at a high school is a more affordable option than joining a pricey gym, and students can try out the sport before they decide to become

    • Demian Maia to coach next season of TUF? Really?

During the post-UFC 91 press conference, Dana White hinted that Demian Maia might coach the next season of the Ultimate Fighter, which will feature fighters from the U.S. and the U.K. You read that right. Demian Maia.

Don't get me wrong. Maia is a fantastic fighter and will have a prolific career in the UFC. His jiu-jitsu is at a level rarely seen in the Octagon, and his potential to grow as a fighter is unlimited. I didn't expect him to win on Saturday, and he easily proved me wrong. I can't wait to see what he does next, because it will be exciting.

However, Maia has only fought four UFC matches. Yes, he has won all four in breathtaking fashion, but he is still not a well-rounded fighter. His stand up needs a ton of work. How is he going to teach the next generation fighters when he doesn't know how to do it himself?

The TUF coaches in the past have been champions and legends. Starting with Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell and leading us to the current season with interim heavyweight

    • What the world is saying about UFC 91: Stephens wins KO of forever

USA Today's take on Lesnar's win.

Kenny Florian certainly made a statement on Saturday. Not only did he beat Joe Stevenson convincingly, but he also told B.J. Penn that he wanted to kill him.

The L.A. Times went behind the scenes for UFC 91.

MMA Junkie gives us a rundown of fight bonuses for the weekend. Jeremy Stephens is the most deserving "Knockout of the Night" winner, possibly ever.

There is talk of the UFC heading to Germany next year, and some are hoping that Couture-Liddell IV will be the headliner fight. Do not count me in that group.

Is Brock Lesnar a top-five heavyweight?

Saturday's crowd drew $4.8 million. I still can't wait to hear what the pay-per-view numbers are. The UFC doesn't always release them, but rest assured, if they topped Dana White's prediction of 1.2 million, he will be shouting it from the mountain tops.

They're not all losers at the Couture household this week. Randy's son Ryan won his UFC debut.

Chuck Liddell might have gotten in a little trouble on the USO tour.

Georges St. Pierre vs. B.J. Penn was officially announced for Super Bowl weekend. If Penn wins, how will that affect the lightweight and welterweight divisions?

And what of Anderson Silva? His list of possible opponents is thin.

The weird saga of Todd Beard ended with him resigning from Affliction.

    • UFC 91: the best of Rogan and Goldberg

That was an entertaining night of fights. I liked that there wasn't a main event that went to the decision, and that every win was by a highlight reel submission or knockout. It will be interesting to see how the pay-per-view numbers shake out, but I did have a bit of anecdotal evidence about the buy rates. When I called my cable company to order the fight, I was on hold for quite a while. The operator said that the phones were ringing off the hook for the fight. Again, it's anecdotal, but I've never had to wait for an operator when trying to order a fight.

As usual, one of the more entertaining, non-fight aspects of the evening was figuring out what statement from our announcers was the most ridiculous. Though they seemed a little toned down -- maybe they don't have to be so outlandish when the fight card is actually good -- but they still had some gems:

"There they are! Those crazy dudes from Tapout!" Crazy, or obnoxious and opportunistic. Whatever.

What does vodka, communist Poland and soccer have in common? Besides World Cup Football? This week's episode of the Ultimate Fighter, of course! Awards and spoilers are after the jump.

Looking back at the last fight between Phillipe Nover and Dave Kaplan, Kaplan's game plan of taking a few punches and trying to outlast Phillipe did not work. Kaplan ended up tapping out in the first round, so clearly, he needs more working on strategizing for a fight. Phillipe believes he sent a message to the other lightweights in the house.

Krzystof is scheduled to fight next, but his hand is not in good shape. Don House, a boxing trainer, came in to check it out and he thinks K (as he will heretofore be called) will be fine. Foreshadowing?

At the house, Kaplan starts drinking with Tom Lawlor. He starts with shots of vodka -- my favorite! -- and shenanigans ensure. Kaplan calls out everyone in the house, prides himself in the fact that he has never been knocked out (though he has been tapped out not

    • Predictions, beyond pain, for UFC 91

This is one of the weirder pay-per-view fight cards that the UFC has put together in a while. Much like Brock Lesnar, it is top-heavy. At the same time, I think that the main event will entertain us enough that we won't mind the $44.95.

Dustin Hazelett vs. Tamdan McCrory: This fight was just elevated to the televised card after Amir Sadollah had to pull out of his fight with Nick Catone due to a leg infection. MMA Rated is calling this fight the Revenge of the Nerds, and I can't think of a better name for it. Can you think of two guys who are geekier-looking? McCrory is described by the UFC as awkwardly strong. Hazelett has the flexibility of a 12 16-year-old Chinese gymnast. This fight will go to the ground, and I'm betting that we see some bizarre submission attempts, and equally bizarre attempts to get out of them. My pick is Hazelett by an arm bar.

Nate Quarry vs. Demian Maia: Nate Quarry can win this fight if he stays on his feet. Going to the ground with Maia is suicide, as
