    • A stubborn Palaszewski ready for Sunday's fight against Lamas

Some would call Bart Palaszewsi determined; others would call him stubborn. What do you call a guy who stuck with MMA after losing his first four fights?

This Sunday at WEC 39, Palaszewski will face Ricardo Lamas, a last-minute replacement for Richard Crunkilton. He'll take with him the experience of more than 40 fights; quite a number for someone who hasn't reached his 26th birthday.

Looking at Palaszewski's career, you can pick out many points where a sane man might have thrown in the towel. Right at the beginning, when he lost four fights in a row. Or maybe, after three straight losses in the International Fight League. What about when the IFL folded? Or before that, when he lost a decision to some guy named Clay Guida.

But that's just not the kind of guy that Polish-born Palaszewski is. He took full advantage of his opportunity with the WEC, beating Alex Karalexis in his first fight for the promotion by TKO in December. Now, just three months later, he takes on fellow Illinoisan

    • Ultimate Fight Night 18 is a cheap affair, and not in a good way

What comes first, the cheap fighters or cheap tickets?

The UFC has announced both the fight card and ticket prices for Ultimate Fight Night 18 on Apr. 1 in Nashville, Tenn. The tickets range from $20-200, cheaper than other UFC events where the floor seats can reach $800. However, much like the huge tub of mayonnaise at Sam's Club, this event is not the value it seems to be.

The fight card is filled with guys who are still on their Ultimate Fighter contracts, including everyone's favorite ne'er-do-well, Junie Browning, who will be fighting another TUF alum, Cole Miller. TUF winners Ryan Bader and Efrain Escudero (pictured) will also have the first bouts of their six-figure contracts. Former WEC middleweights Aaron Simpson and Nissan Osterneck are also on the card, which is headlined by former WEC welterweight champ Carlos Condit.

So, you're not exactly getting title fights for your $20. You're not even getting fights that will set up title fights for your $20. But if you're in

    • Create-a-Caption: Jared 'The Spider' McMahan's spider-web hair

Jared "The Spider" McMahan, in a win at C3 Evolution in Hammond, Ind., is really trying to make his nickname happen. It's a shame that there is someone else with a slightly bigger rep in MMA who already has that name. Give us your best shot at a caption in the comments, and read on to find the previous C-a-C winners.

    • Marquardt vs. Maia should be the people's choice

After their wins on Saturday, both Demian Maia and Nate Marquardt have staked their claims on the next title fight at middleweight, after Anderson Silva presumably disposes of Thales Leites at UFC 97. But looking at both their records, shouldn't they need to get through each other first?

Since Marquardt last had a shot at Silva, he has wins over Wilson Gouveia, Martin Kampmann and Jeremy Horn, plus a loss to Leites. Maia is undefeated, with wins over Chael Sonnen, Nate Quarry and Jason MacDonald. Neither fighter's resume is so glowing that you look at it and think, "TITLE SHOT!"

Wouldn't the perfect solution to that be a fight with ... let's say ... each other? Marquardt's striking against Maia's submissions sounds like a fun time to me. The fight could happen in June/July, just a short time after the Silva/Leites bout, setting up another title fight for the middleweight belt before the end of the year. This sets up the most exciting set of fights for a middleweight division that has

In advance of his fight with Ryo Kawamura at Sengoku on March 20, King Mo got himself a tattoo that is succinct and to the point.

    • Spike continues its 'live' silliness

Apparently, Spike still thinks that we are stupid. Though Saturday's UFC 95 event was shown on tape delay, the cable network used a graphic that said "Live from London." Why?

Spike pulled the same thing for UFC 89, and it still makes no sense. The American television audience isn't thrilled about watching a sporting event on tape delay, but we're also smart enough to understand time zones, and that a sporting event isn't likely to start at 3 a.m. in London. There is no good reason to add "live" to a broadcast when it just isn't true.

    • Rogan and Goldberg teach reading, writing and 'rithmetic

Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg, if not always informative, are entertaining. UFC 95 was no exception. Let's take a look at the best from Saturday night's broadast on Spike.

"Rory Markham is a dangerous killer." -- Rogan. If that's true, shouldn't he be in prison?

"Koscheck is one of the most dangerous men in the world at welterweight." -- Goldberg. Unless your name is Thiago Alves, Georges St. Pierre or, apparently, Paulo Thiago

"That's how good Demian Maia is." -- Rogan. After Maia triangle choked Sonnen. Um, isn't that obvious?

"William Gouveia being overwhelmed here, I mean, Wilson." -- Rogan Nice save, Joe.

"I'm with one of the baddest dudes on the planet, Rampage Jackson." -- Rogan Actually, that's a pretty fair assessment.

"Look at that, we've got three of them." -- Rogan, in reference to the Octagon Girls. We're very proud of Joe that he can count to three. What if the UFC hires a fourth one? Oh noes!

"He's getting badder here." -- Rogan, during the Etim/Cobb fight, showing off

    • Achhal makes MMA debut after escaping arranged marriage

Many fighters have had tough paths to the cage. Some have come up from poor families, been beaten by their parents or have seen mixed martial arts as their only way out. Iman Acchal has faced all of those things and crossed an ocean to become a fighter.

Achhal was born in Morocco and is Muslim. As is the custom, her parents arranged for her to be married to a man she didn't know. After seeing friends go through the same custom and be unhappy, she decided that she needed to leave and go to America. That wasn't very easy, as her parents would not receive the money they were promised for her wedding if Iman left. When she told her parents she was leaving, her mom beat her. As she said:

Even as an MMA fighter, that was the worst beating of my life.

Here in the United States, she has carved out a life for herself, and found solace in fighting. After winning three amateur bouts, she will make her pro debut with the Ultimate Warrior Challenge on Saturday night against fellow rookie Felice

    • Phew, Canada: UFC 97 is on

After officials from Quebec threatened to stop UFC 97 from happening, the UFC braintrust traveled north to make sure that the event still happened. Tickets were already on sale, and a full card, which includes Anderson Silva vs. Thales Leites and Chuck Liddell vs. Mauricio Rua, had already been scheduled. Lorenzo Fertitta and Marc Ratner's efforts proved effective, as the fights will go on as scheduled, though foot-stomping won't be allowed. It's good that they added in that caveat, as it's foot-stomping that truly makes people think that sport is barbaric. I assume that the Three Stooges are also banned in Canada.
