    • Mark your calendars and update your passport for UFC 98, 99

The UFC confirmed two long-rumored events today. First, UFC 98: Lesnar vs. Mir II on May 23 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and UFC 99: The Comeback, which will feature Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva in Cologne, Germany on June 13.

Mir vs. Lesnar II is the conclusion of the long, drawn-out tournament which will unify the heavyweight belt. It will also be a rematch of Lesnar's first fight in the UFC, a submission loss to Mir. Matt Hughes and Matt Serra will also fight in a bout that had title implications a year ago, but after injuries to Serra, is more just a grudge match between two men who don't like each other very much.

Comeback is an apt title for Franklin vs. Silva, as they are both coming off losses. As Silva tries to cut down to middleweight, the bout will be fought at a catchweight, 195 lbs. This will be the UFC's first event in Germany. Again, title implications won't factor into this fight, but it is an intriguing match-up.

Jeff Curran and Urijah Faber fondly remember when Faber won over Curran by guillotine at WEC 31. Well, maybe Curran isn't so fond of that memory. Take your shot at a caption in the comments, and read on for winners from the last Create-a-Caption.

    • Disturbing fight: Page’s controversial knockout of Galvao

One of the lasting images of WEC 39 was Damacio Page's vicious knockout of Marcus Galvao. It was a quick knockout, as the fight only lasted 18 seconds, and Page quickly overpowered Galvao. A fight that was originally on the undercard generally wouldn't generate much discussion, but this fight did. There are two issues that have the MMA world buzzing today.

      1. After Galvao was knocked out, Page landed another two punches before the fight was stopped by referee Rafael Ramos. The referees walk a fine line on fight stoppages. Too early, and you'll face the ire of fans and fighters, but too late, and you can put a fighter's life at risk. However, this is not one of the times when the call could have gone either way. It was clear as a bell that Galvao was out, and Ramos was just not fast enough in stopping Page.

      2. If you just watched the Versus broadcast of the fights, you would have no clue that Galvao reacted so badly to the knockout in the ring. As you can see in the video above,

    • Good, bad and ugly of WEC 39, with Todd Harris in velvet

As usual, World Extreme Cagefighting put on a strong slate of fights on Versus on Sunday night. Mike Brown retained his championship belt, and most of the fights were interesting.

      The good:

Jens Pulver as the color commentator -- Pulver was a refreshing surprise on the microphone. He seemed to know each fighter personally, and was comfortable sharing their strengths and weaknesses. He also had no problem with self-deprecation, narrating his own loss to Leonard Garcia, telling the viewing audience, "When he hits, it hurts. I promise ya."

A good mix of fights -- Not that Versus or the WEC had much control over this, but the televised card had two decisions, a knockout, a technical knockout and a submission. You can't get more balanced than that.

      The bad:

"The competition is on!" -- Ring announcer Joe Martinez. For the most part, Martinez does a good job. He doesn't draw attention to himself over the fighters, like some other people, and he has a good handle on names of fighters from all

    • The adventures of Randy and Big Nog: Do they want to fight?

Randy Couture: Hey Nog, you sure you want to fight? You're looking pretty beat up.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira: Me? Have you looked in a mirror lately?

Randy: Well, come on! That was after that big idiot kept hitting me! Don't you remember who you lost to?

Nog: For sure. Look at that guy.

Randy: So what do we do now? We're both legends, but do we want to keep fighting? We're getting kind of old.

Nog: Speak for yourself! I'm young! I'm hip! I shop at American Eagle, and look at who I hang out with!

Randy: Pfft. That doesn't make you young. Look at who I hang out with. Seriously. We need to figure out what we want to do. My bucket list is pretty much crossed off -- Olympics, Army, UFC championship and hall-of-fame. I have always wanted to do a safari in Africa, but I think Kim would get angry if I went with you.

Randy: And you wouldn't like Kim when she's angry.

Nog: Well, I've jumped off a garbage truck and lived, and spent a night in a bar with Stankie, so I'm pretty much through

    • D'oh! Lost bib spells trouble for U.S. ski team

Bill Demong, a U.S. ski jumper, misplaced his start number bib on Thursday, and was thus disqualified. His gaffe not only cost him a chance for a medal, but kept the U.S. from winning the world title at the Nordic ski championships in the Czech Republic.

Until Demong's mistake, the U.S. had a banner week, taking home three golds, a silver and a bronze. Previously, the U.S. had never won more than one medal at the championships. Demong's gaffe put the U.S. in 12th place, and opened the door for Japan to take the title.

After his start time had come and gone, Demong found the bib in his boot. He had no problem blaming the right person for the error:

“It’s my fault,” he said. “I’m an idiot.”

At least Demong is not alone in making this sort of error. Chris Webber lost Michigan the 1993 men's basketball NCAA Championship after calling a timeout when his team had none to call. Golfer Robert De Vicenzo lost the Masters in 1968 after signing an incorrect scorecard, famously muttering, "What

    • Upcoming fights for heavyweights, old and young

The UFC has made a few moves in the sometimes sucky, sometimes amazing heavyweight division.

-- Randy Couture agreed to a fight with fellow MMA legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, but as of yet, Nog has not signed on. This is a fight many anticipated, but expected that it would be for the unified heavyweight title. But after Couture's loss to Brock Lesnar, and Nog's loss to Frank Mir, these two will match-up at UFC 101. That should put to rest any rumors of Couture vs. Fedor Emelianenko at UFC 100.

-- Heath Herring will face up-and-coming heavyweight Cain Velasquez at UFC 99 in June in Germany. This fight, as well as Gabriel Gonzaga's upcoming bout with Shane Carwin, should clear up the championship ladder in the heavyweight division.

    • A stubborn Palaszewski ready for Sunday's fight against Lamas

Some would call Bart Palaszewsi determined; others would call him stubborn. What do you call a guy who stuck with MMA after losing his first four fights?

This Sunday at WEC 39, Palaszewski will face Ricardo Lamas, a last-minute replacement for Richard Crunkilton. He'll take with him the experience of more than 40 fights; quite a number for someone who hasn't reached his 26th birthday.

Looking at Palaszewski's career, you can pick out many points where a sane man might have thrown in the towel. Right at the beginning, when he lost four fights in a row. Or maybe, after three straight losses in the International Fight League. What about when the IFL folded? Or before that, when he lost a decision to some guy named Clay Guida.

But that's just not the kind of guy that Polish-born Palaszewski is. He took full advantage of his opportunity with the WEC, beating Alex Karalexis in his first fight for the promotion by TKO in December. Now, just three months later, he takes on fellow Illinoisan

    • Ultimate Fight Night 18 is a cheap affair, and not in a good way

What comes first, the cheap fighters or cheap tickets?

The UFC has announced both the fight card and ticket prices for Ultimate Fight Night 18 on Apr. 1 in Nashville, Tenn. The tickets range from $20-200, cheaper than other UFC events where the floor seats can reach $800. However, much like the huge tub of mayonnaise at Sam's Club, this event is not the value it seems to be.

The fight card is filled with guys who are still on their Ultimate Fighter contracts, including everyone's favorite ne'er-do-well, Junie Browning, who will be fighting another TUF alum, Cole Miller. TUF winners Ryan Bader and Efrain Escudero (pictured) will also have the first bouts of their six-figure contracts. Former WEC middleweights Aaron Simpson and Nissan Osterneck are also on the card, which is headlined by former WEC welterweight champ Carlos Condit.

So, you're not exactly getting title fights for your $20. You're not even getting fights that will set up title fights for your $20. But if you're in
