    • Pellegrino dominates his way to a submission victory at UFC 111

In a bout that was a grappling clinic, it was no surprise that it ended in submission. New Jersey native Kurt Pellegrino won by rear naked choke over Fabricio Camoes at 4:20 in the second round in front of a partisan crowd at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

In the first round, the two showed off beautiful jiu-jitsu. Camoes started off strong, taking Pellegrino's back while still on his feet, and tried to sink in a rear naked choke. Pellegrino survived by planting Camoes on his head and shaking him off. The pair then scrambled around on the ground, each trying for submissions.

Pellegrino came out strong in the second round, with a takedown that led to a mount. Pellegrino continued to control on the ground until he applied a rear naked choke. Camoes held on as long as he could, but tapped to give Pellegrino the win.

"Batman" has quietly put together a four-fight winning streak, with Pellegrino's last loss nearly two years ago. The dominant performance he put on Saturday night

    • Jersey boy Miller outlasts Bocek in a tight UFC 111 bout

In what is an early candidate for fight of the night, New Jersey native Jim Miller won a unanimous decision, 29-28, on all cards.

This fight was everywhere -- on the ground, on the feet, and all over the Octagon. Mark Bocek showed off unbelievable toughness in the first round as he outlasted a tough Miller Kimura attempt. Bocek appeared to think about tapping, but held on and made it through the round without getting his shoulder ripped off.

Bocek dominated the second round, spending much of it on Miller's back. Bocek mounted Miller's back but wasn't ever able to sink in the hooks to finish the choke. Miller lasted nearly 90 seconds in a tight body triangle from Bocek, but held on.

In the third round, Bocek ate knees while trying to get a takedown, but finally finished the takedown. However, in the final seconds, Miller took Bocek's back. He didn't do any damage there but in a fight so close, every little bit helped.

    • Almeida chokes out Brown at UFC 111

Ricardo Almeida showed off his BJJ black belt skills with a rear naked choke win over Matt Brown at 3:30 of the second round at the Prudential Center in New Jersey.

Almeida clearly wanted the game on the ground and spent most of the first round working to get Brown down. Almeida started the fight with a takedown attempt, and pushed Brown into the cage. Once he finally got Brown to the canvas, the fighters quickly returned to their feet, and after a few punches, Almeida went for another takedown.

At the start of the second, Almeida was successful in a quick double-leg takedown. Brown scooted to the cage and used it to help him get back to his feet. When Brown tried to throw a kick, Almeida caught it and took Brown to the ground. After an Almeida elbow, Brown began to bleed. While on the ground, Almeida moved to perfect position and sunk in a rear naked choke. Brown had no choice but to tap.

"This is my house, my home, and I wasn't going to let him beat me here," Almeida said after the

    • Asada finally beats Kim in figure-skating worlds

In the World Figure Skating Championships that immediately follow the Olympics, the winner is quite often not the world's best skater, but the one who handles Olympic fatigue and the stress of a lengthened season the best.

Today in Torino, that was Japanese Olympic silver medalist Mao Asada. She won gold, beating Kim Yu-Na by nearly seven points.

Asada, who has spent much of her career in Kim's shadow, skated an aggressive, graceful routine. She completed two triple Axels, an incredibly difficult jump to perform even once, and had flawless footwork and spirals. Unfortunately, her second triple Axel was downgraded to a double, but that didn't keep her from winning gold.

Olympic champion Kim falters, still wins silver

Kim, fresh off her gold medal at the Olympics, had a disastrous World Championships. She came into the free skate in seventh place after making small but costly errors in the short program. In Saturday's free skate, she fell on a triple salchow and singled a planned

    • Johnson, Humphrey, Tate impress at Strikeforce: Challengers

At Strikeforce: Challengers in Fresno on Friday night, Lavar Johnson, Ron "Abongo" Humphrey and Miesha Tate stood out with wins, all by stoppages.

In the headliner, Johnson won with a TKO in the second round. Before Mahe and Johnson even took to the cage, they had been through plenty of drama. Mahe served a five-year stint in prison for assault, while this was Johnson's first fight back after being shot.

Mahe controlled the first round with effective strikes, a takedown and ground and pound, but he was spent early in the second round. Johnson clearly had better cardio, throwing punches and kicks throughout the round as Mahe dropped his hands and breathed heavily. Finally, Johnson unleashed a barrage of punches, bloodying Mahe's nose and finishing the fight at 3:29 in the second round.

"It feels great just to be a part of this," Johnson said. "I was kind of nervous, but just being able to overcome the gunshots feels good."

    • Fight world lookalikes: A Dominator and a 'Psycho'

Ben Goldstein from Cage Potato brought this lookalike pair to our attention: WEC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz and actor Anthony Perkins, best known for his role as Norman Bates in the Alfred Hitchcock classic "Psycho." Though Cruz loves his mother enough to hand her his championship belt immediately after winning it, he's not crazy enough to utter some of the crazy lines Bates said about his.

    • Russian officials still on hot seat over Vancouver performance

Russian president Dmitry Medvedev is still angry over his country's Olympic performance -- the Olympics that concluded nearly a month ago.

At a ceremony looking ahead to the 2014 Games in Sochi, he again blasted his country's Olympic officials -- the ones he hadn't already fired -- for the mere 15 medals that Russia brought home from Vancouver.

"You must work 24 hours a day, not just wear out the seats of your pants and rove abroad," Medvedev told sports federations chiefs in televised remarks at Sochi ... "We must show that we are a capable, hospitable and technologically developed nation," he said. "And the Olympics must also show that we can stand for ourselves and win."

He then threatened their jobs, saying they would be replaced if they didn't shape up.

It's true that Russia's sport systems are in a bad state, but at some point Medvedev may want to look forward to a chance his country has to shine instead of the one occasion in which they fell short.

    • Cagewriter facepalm of the week: the great state of Illinois

We haven't had a Cagewriter facepalm of the week in a while, but this week, my beloved home state merits it. Why? Because they've decided that regulating amateur bouts isn't worth their time.

According to the Chicago Tribune, while there has been no change in the way professional bouts are regulated, amateur bouts are getting little to no oversight.

The state no longer requires blood testing to verify that fighters don't have AIDS, HIV or hepatitis B. And while the revised law says events must provide protections including on-site medical staff, safety equipment and standards for striking techniques, it does not define what is acceptable or require proof of compliance.

A change in the state law was made supposedly to make it easier for youth groups to hold karate tournaments. As happy as I am that it will be easy for Johnny to participate in the All-Valley Tournament, the unintended consequences are dire.

Obviously, it concerns me that no one will be looking out for people starting

    • Ellenberger surprised, disappointed at missing out on 111 bout

In the turn of a few hours, Thiago Alves dropped out of his UFC 111 bout with Jon Fitch because he wasn't medically cleared, and Ben Saunders was named as a replacement to take on Fitch. Saunders had been scheduled to fight Jake Ellenberger, leaving Ellenberger as the odd man out.

"I was disappointed," Ellenberger told Cagewriter. "Ben Saunders asked for the fight, Dana liked that, so our fight took a backseat."

When the news first broke that Alves was out, Ellenberger thought everything would go on as normal.

"It took me by complete surprise."

Ellenberger, who had stepped in to face Saunders when Martin Kampmann was cut in practice, said that UFC matchmaker Joe Silva is looking for a make-up match for Ellenberger. In the meantime, he has been paid both his show and win money for the bout.

"That helps a lot. It eases the pain of not fighting."

Ellenberger, who is 1-1 in the UFC, still wants to face Saunders, but doesn't have a rooting interest in Saturday's bout.

Bobby Lashley has five wins under his belt, but that doesn't mean he doesn't still have a lot to learn. Sometimes that means training with a tiny woman with very large gloves. Take a shot at a caption in the comments, and read on for winners of our last caption contest.

Ed. note: Since we had so few entries last week, there is only one winner this week:
