    • Japanese fighter loses his ear and the bout

At a Pancrase event in Japan last weekend, Shigeyuki Uchiyama lost a part of his ear.

No, really. Reports from the bout say that while fighting Masaya Takita in a ring, the top part of Uchiyama's ear was shorn off. Here's one report from Fanhouse's Daniel Herbertson:

It was not clear how the cauliflowered ear was torn but blood could be seen on the top and bottom ropes. Most likely, Uchiyama's ear was caught in the vertical ropes that keep the horizontal ropes even, although no blood could be seen on them.

As soon as Pancrase officials identified what the bloody lump on the canvas was a doctor check was called and the bout was stopped at 2:57 of Round 2.

That's right. They had to identify the bloody lump that had once been Uchiyama's ear. Read on for pictures, but please be warned. They are quite graphic.

The takedown attempt that ended an ear.

    • East Chicago, Ind. celebrates Torres day with a party and a mullet

WEC former champ Miguel Torres was honored by his hometown of East Chicago, Ind.,on Friday. Torres is well-respected in his hometown not just for his achievements as a fighter, but for his work within the community. He was given the key to the city, honored at a ceremony in downtown East Chicago, and even took time to give a haircut to someone who wanted Torres' signature mullet.

Torres' gym is in neighboring Hammond, Ind., and he has always stayed close to the community. His gym is brimming with children from the area and several of them were on hand at the ceremony honoring Torres.

"The thing with kids is that they don't have any bad habits. I've trained adults my whole life, and it's hard to break through that exterior. Children come in with an open mind. They have an imagination. All you have to do is give them tools, and they do well," Torres said.

Torres said he wants to work with the schools in his region to teach martial arts because he knows the positive effect that

    • 'Rampage' says lighten up about gay slurs, still doesn't get it

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson wrote a blog post on his website in response to an article in the Los Angeles Times that called Jackson out for using gay slurs. Jackson blames the reporter for only caring about getting the scoop. Rampage also defends his relationship with the GLBT community, saying that he's even been to a gay bar owned by a friend. Jackson finishes the post by saying:

EVERYBODY LIGHTEN THE [expletive] UP! LET'S HAVE FUN! THAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WE CAN DO RIGHT NOW! THERE'S TOO MUCH NEGATIVITY IN THIS WORLD, SO LET'S JUST FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE THINGS AND I GUARANTEE IF WE DO THAT THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER!

You're right, Rampage. There is too much negativity in the world, especially negativity aimed at people who live their lives in the minority. Negativity aimed at homosexuals often comes in the form of the gay slurs that you are trying to defend using.

Ben Fowlkes at MMA Fighting points out that allowing that gay slur to be used opens the door to much more

    • Gym Class: Roufus Sport Academy in Milwaukee

From time to time, Cagewriter will visit the gyms, dojos and academies that churn out the world's best fighters and tell you all about them. We call it Gym Class, but don't worry. You won't be expected to complete the Presidential Fitness Test at the end.

I visited Duke Roufus' Roufus Sport Academy on one of the first hot days to hit Milwaukee this summer. The temperature was above 90 degrees and the humidity was high, but that did nothing to quell the training going on inside the gym that features UFC fighters Pat Barry, Alan Belcher, Matt Mitrione and the WEC's Anthony Pettis among its members.

In the middle of it all is Duke Roufus, the kickboxing guru who runs the gym and has helped his fighters to a winning streak. When I arrived, he was in the middle of meeting new members, greeting me and getting Barry for an interview while also running a Muay Thai class. Somehow, he gave undivided attention to each task.

He gave a practical application to each move he taught his students.

    • 'The Ultimate Fighter' recap: Goodbye, sweet Tito

In last week's episode of "The Ultimate Fighter," coaches Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz had some words with each other over the result of a fight, and then Dana White told Liddell that Ortiz had pulled out of their fight. According to the man who tells us what is happening in tonight's episode, Dana White will make one of "the most shocking decisions in Ultimate Fighter history!" Aren't you glad you tuned in?

Liddell reacts to the news that he won't fight his nemesis calmly and coolly. Just kidding! He calls Ortiz another word for a cat and throws a tantrum. Luckily for the doors in the newly remodeled TUF-gym, he didn't beat up any furniture.

At the house, Jamie Yager boasts that the quarterfinal matchup with Josh Bryant is what he's been training for all season, saying that everything Ortiz has taught them will come to play during the fight.

Quarterfinal bout: Josh Bryant (Team Liddell) vs. Jamie Yager (Team Ortiz or Punishment or whatever)

Round 1: They start with a clinch where

    • Garcia and Jung beat each other up, then head to Denny's

When a fight is over, the two fighters often embrace and congratulate each other on a hard-fought battle. Occassionally, they throw a punch after the bell or jump a fighter silly enough to walk into their cage.

Sometimes, they head to Denny's to enjoy some Moons Over My Hammy.

That's what Leonard Garcia and Chan Sung Jung did after their epic bout at WEC: Aldo vs. Faber.

The truth is, we went to the hospital together and then we went and ate at Denny's together. Then we met again the next day. His family that was down there wanted to meet me, and we also exchanged shirts. That, to me, is the epitome of fighting. That's what makes me want to do it so much. That's what makes all the pain and the hurting sort of go away.

Garcia and Jung's fight was ridiculously fun to watch. True, it wasn't as technically strong as I usually like fights to be, but it was clear that both fighters were laying it all on the line. Neither held anything back, and afterwards, they had no problem chilling out

    • MMA Marketplace: UFC Expo's most worn shirts

Scrolling through the pictures of last weekend's UFC Expo, one shirt stood out to me. For one, it's a sweet design. Secondly, I kept seeing pictures of people wearing the shirt.

As modeled by Robbie Lawler in the Lawler/Lawlor picture, it's Tapout's "We Run MMA" shirt. I like shirts that are designed a bit different from the norm and also shirts that invoke awesome rap groups. You combine them into one shirt? WANT. You can get it here for $24.

      — Again, thank you for your generosity and support for my Relay for Life campaign. As of this writing, we've raised $1,185. You still have time to get your name in the raffle to win $100 worth of Tapout gear. Donate at least $25 to the American Cancer Society through my Relay for Life team by June 18 at 1 p.m. ET, and you can win.

    • UFC 114's Three Stars: Brilz, Evans and Hathaway

Hockey has a tradition of choosing three stars from each game and honoring them on the ice. It's such a nice tradition that we're going to use it here at Cagewriter. Here are your stars from UFC 114.

No. 1 star: Jason Brilz, who lost a split decision to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

It's rare that a losing fighter would be considered a star, but Brilz was impressive in his split decision loss to "Little Nog," a decision that easily could have been awarded to Brilz. Taking the fight on just four weeks notice, Brilz came close to beating a top 205-lb fighter. For his trouble, he was awarded a $65,000 Fight of the Night bonus.

No. 2 star: Rashad Evans, who beat Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and earned a title shot

Evans' speed and wrestling won the fight for him, but his chin kept him from losing that bout. In the third round, Jackson clipped Evans with a punch that knocked him to the ground. Jackson followed up with a series of strikes that put Evans in danger, but because he remained calm and
