    • Anderson Silva has tough sparring session to get ready for Belfort

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva faced a difficult opponent at the UFC 126 open workout on Thursday. His 12-year-old son Kalyl got his licks in on his dad, getting him ready to face someone with (presumably) more punching power, Vitor Belfort.

With Silva being one of the best fighters in the world who can come off as ornery and stand-offish, it's nice to see him just be a regular father who wrestles around with his son. Of course, when my father wrestled around with my brother, there was little danger of a perfect arm bar happening. That's not so with the Silva family.

      Thanks to the Canadian Press.

    • Gina Carano returns to training MMA at Xtreme Couture

Well, would you look at who is back training at Xtreme Couture again? According to their blog, Gina Carano.

The fighter whose last bout was an August 2009 loss to Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos sparred at Randy Couture's gym. Since that bout, she's spent time filming the movie "Haywire." The folks at Xtreme Couture didn't share any information on a return to fighting date for Carano, but it's good to see her sparring again.

As one of the first women (along with Santos) to ever headline a nationally televised MMA card, she is a proven draw and an exciting fighter. Strikeforce must be dancing in the streets over images of wearing boxing gloves.

      Welcome back, Gina.

    • After Twitter campaign, UFC to air Mighty Mouse vs. Kid on Facebook

The UFC announced today that they will air the Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson vs. Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto bout on their Facebook page, just as they did for two preliminary bouts from "Fight for the Troops 2." If you hadn't already "liked" their page from Fight for the Troops, do it this week to see the Mighty Mouse/Kid bout.

Over the past few weeks, Johnson had campaigned to have his bout aired. He encouraged his Twitter followers to contact UFC president Dana White, also through Twitter, to urge the UFC to put his fight on TV. Though the fight won't be on television, it will be free and available to anyone with internet access and a Facebook account.

This is another occasion of the UFC understanding social media like few other sports companies. In Johnson, they have a fighter who rallied fans to use Twitter to get what he wanted. The UFC was smart enough to give the fans what they wanted it, but still leverage it to expand the reach of their Facebook page.

      With this bout airing on

    • MMA Marketplace: The ridiculously-priced Jonny Bones hoodie

Urijah Faber's Form Athletics has made a big splash in MMA clothing in this past year with cool designs and an impressive stable of fighters, including Anthony Pettis and Jon "Bones" Jones. For Jones' fight at UFC 126, they designed this hoodie:

Pretty sweet, right? Understated, interesting stitching and best of all? It doesn't look like a standard-issue MMA design. Unfortunately, it's $87.99, a price out of reach for many MMA fans who are already shelling out $45 to just watch the fights this weekend.

    • Snowvereem: The most disturbing video of Pat Barry you'll ever see

UFC heavyweight Pat Barry is a New Orleans native who lives in Milwaukee to train with Duke Roufus, so forgive him for not knowing how to handle the epic snowstorm that is hitting the Midwest. True Midwesterners know that it's generally a good idea to wear clothes while playing in the snow.

Hopefully, Barry learned a lesson about proper snow wear, or he will soon be streaking the streets of Milwaukee. Considering that he's tweeted pictures from the men's room, would anyone be surprised?

For the Cagewriter readers who are contending with this storm, please, be careful.

Thanks to Bloody Elbow for the heads up.

    • Japanese stars Omigawa, Yamamoto to fight at UFC 126

UFC 126 will feature the Octagon debut debut and return of two fighters who have made names for themselves in Japanese MMA: Michihiro Omigawa and Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto.

Omigawa will face Chad Mendes, a rising star from Urijah Faber's camp with a strong wrestling background. Omigawa comes into the fight on a five-bout winning streak, including this unorthodox armbar submission of Cole Escovedo. Skip to around 2:30 to catch it:

At 35, he stands in stark contrast of Mendes' youth. He has a background in judo, so when that is paired with Mendes' wrestling, a ground fight will ensure. Don't expect for this bout, scheduled to air on Spike before the pay-per-view card, to turn into a slugfest.

UPDATE: Somehow, I forgot Omigawa's first stint in the UFC. Go easy on me -- I'm in the middle of Snowpocalypse.

Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto will make his UFC debut after an up and down streak few years in Japan. The son of an Olympic wrestler, Kid didn't fight in 2008 so that he could try for a spot

    • 'The Biggest Loser' contestant Gardner pushes mega burger

Rulon Gardner, an Olympic gold and bronze medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling, is currently starring on NBC's reality show "The Biggest Loser," trying to take off 200-plus pounds that he put on since wrestling competitively. So far, he is one of the best competitors on the show, having lost 59 pounds through a combination of brutal workouts and a change in diet.

Unfortunately, the lessons about healthy eating that he is learning on the show don't apply to his restaurant. Rulon's Burger Bar in Wyoming serves a whopping 1.5-pound burger that comes with a challenge. If you finish the entire burger -- a sandwich so large that it is served in a pizza tin -- a basket of fries and a 44-ounce soda pop, you get a T-shirt and your name on the wall.

One man who "won" the challenge showed determination in finishing his meal.

"Failure's not an option in my mind when it comes to things like this," [Jeff] Hunsaker said. "I was going to make it. If I had to throw up, so be it, I was going to get it

    • Nice guys finish fights: Marquardt, sick kids, Lawlor and troops

Fighters may spend their days punching people in the face and trying to rip limbs off of their opponents, but that doesn't mean they're not nice people. Plenty of fighters give their time to charity without hope of publicity or adulation. Here, we aim to give them both publicity and adulation.

First up: hanging out with sick kids:

Nate Marquardt and his team from Grudge Training Center took a break from training for Yoshihiro Akiyama to visit the Children's Hospital in Colorado.

Next up, Tom Lawlor and the troops:

Tom Lawlor led a delegation that included Seth Petruzelli and Nate Quarry to visit and train with troops stationed around the Pacific.

    • Strikeforce's Three Stars: Diaz, 'Jacare' and de Randamie

Strikeforce flew through their event in San Jose on Saturday. In fact, none of the professional bouts on the card required the use of judges. They all ended in submission or knockout. Who stood out?

No. 1 star -- Nick Diaz: While Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos was tenderizing Diaz's legs with whipping kicks, Diaz somehow fought both aggressively and patiently. He battered Cyborg with bunches of strikes in a back-and-forth first round, and then waited until Cyborg got tired and made a mistake in the second round. Cyborg's takedown was his undoing, allowing Diaz to show off the BJJ skills he attained in earning a black belt from Cesar Gracie.

No. 2 star -- Ronald "Jacare" Souza: Speaking of amazing grapplers, Jacare withstood an early onslaught of strikes from Robbie Lawler to come back and lock up a textbook rear naked choke on Lawler. He is undefeated since his first fight with Strikeforce in late in 2009.

No. 3 star -- Germaine de Randamie: In her third MMA bout, de Randamie showed off

    • 'Jacare' Souza keeps belt with win over Lawler at Strikeforce

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza defended his Strikeforce middleweight championship belt using the world-class jiu-jitsu he is known for, submitting Robbie Lawler with a rear naked choke at Strikeforce in San Jose on Saturday night.

Jacare took Lawler down early in the first round, but when he switched to a guillotine, Lawler was able to get back to his feet. From there, violent stand-up erupted with Lawler throwing big strikes. He used a knee and a combination of punches to knock him to the ground. For some reason, Lawler followed Jacare to the ground, and was controlled on the ground until they were stood up with just 0:25 left in the round. Lawler finished the round strong, throwing strikes until Jacare tried for another takedown.

In the second round, Jacare controlled Lawler on the ground. He punished Lawler with strikes and tried for several submission attempts, but Lawler showed evolution in his fight game, working out of each and every submission attempt with one of MMA's best
