    • Weekend results: Gegard Mousasi, Matt Mitrione, Ross Pearson pick up wins

Perhaps the last-minute opponent change was exactly what Gegard Mousasi needed. The former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion made his debut on Saturday and pulled out a decision over Ilir Latifi, a late replacement after Alexander Gustafsson was not cleared for the fight because of a cut. Mousasi pulled out the unanimous decision win, but shared afterwards that he was dealing with a knee injury.

"I don't want to talk a lot about my injury, but I can tell that this injury, I'm pretty sure 95 percent wouldn't fight, from other fighters," Mousasi said in the postfight press conference.

"You know, I stepped up, I didn't cancel the show, you know, I don't know, we go from here, you know."

In other action, Ross Pearson notched a second-round TKO over Ryan Couture. Matt Mitrione stopped his losing streak with a 19-second KO of Philip de Fries. Brad Pickett won a split decision over Mike Easton in a bout that won Fight of the Night honors. Diego Brandao submitted Pablo Garza in the third

    • And Uriah Hall can fly, too! (Getty)Leading into UFC on Fuel and Invicta, it's been a drama-filled week of MMA. What was hot and what wasn't?

Hot — Pat Curran: Bellator's featherweight champion held onto his belt on Thursday night with a first-round submission of Shabhulat Shamhalaev. It's been two years since his last loss. Since then, he has six wins, including two title defenses.

Not — Practical jokes: When Alexander Gustafsson's status for Saturday's fight was still uncertain, Wanderlei Silva tweeted that he was in for Gustafsson against Gegard Mousasi. He even told media members privately that he was fighting. But the next day he revealed it was an "April Fool's Day" joke. A joke, or a lie?

Hot — Uriah Hall: When he knocked out Adam Cella in the first round of "The Ultimate Fighter," it was hailed as the nastiest knockout ever on TUF. Then Hall went and topped it. He knocked out Bubba McDaniel in a vicious, nine-second bout that ended with McDaniel asking what happened, and UFC president Dana White wondering if it was right to applaud Hall's performance.

Not — Fight-ruining cuts: What was worse — Gustafsson getting cut a week before his fight with Mousasi, or the will-he-or-won't-he drama leading up the the Swedish MMA Federation's medical committee deciding that he couldn't fight? Or was the worst part that they made that decision days before the weigh-in when they could have given the cut more time to heal? It's a bad deal all around.

Still taking temperature — Ilir Latifi: Gustafsson's training partner has the opportunity of his life as he steps in on Saturday to fight Mousasi in the main event of UFC on Fuel 9. He can make his UFC debut very memorable, but will it be good or bad for him.

    • Mousasi and Latifi square off at the weigh-ins. (Getty)UFC on Fuel 9's main card kicks off at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday. What questions will be answered by these fights in Sweden?

Who the heck is Ilir Latifi, anyway? When the Swedish MMA Federation stopped Alexander Gustafsson from fighting because of a cut, the UFC needed a quick replacement for the main event. Latifi, Gustafsson's training partner, stepped up, but we don't know much about him except that he's on a three-fight win streak. Will he take advantage of the opportunity?

    • After rough stretch, Blackzillians hire high-profile coaches

Overeem was knocked out in February. (Getty)The Blackzillians, the south Florida training home of Rashad Evans, Alistair Overeem, Anthony Johnson, Matt Mitrione and other top fighters, made a major move to improve their results. They hired Kenny Monday, an Olympic gold medalist in wrestling, boxing coach Pedro Diaz, and Guillermo Rigondeaux, a two-time Olympic gold medalist boxer, joined the team.

Monday won gold in 1988 and silver in 1992 as a freestyle wrestler. He had one MMA fight in 1997, but mostly has focused on working with wrestlers working towards the Olympics. Diaz has worked with Miguel Cotto in the past.

It's not surprising to see the Blackzilians make moves after they have suffered high profile losses. Overeem was knocked out by Antonio Silva at UFC 156 and Evans lost to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by decision on the same card. Thiago Silva had his November win over Stanislav Nedkov overturned because of a failed drug test. Michael Johnson lost to Myles Jury at UFC 155. Mitrione is riding a a two-fight losing streak into his bout this Saturday with Philip De Fries, though just one of those fights came under the Blackzillians' tutelage.

Melvin Guillard lost his last two fights, and then announced on Twitter that he was leaving the Blackzillians to head back to Greg Jackson's camp. Unfortunately, he wasn't welcomed back to his old team.

Evans is fighting Dan Henderson at UFC 161 in June, and Thiago Silva will fight Rafael Cavalcante at a UFC on Fuel card in June. Both fights will show if the new coaches have made a difference.

    • (Championship Fighting Alliance)Fallon Fox, the postoperative trans fighter who is looking to continue her MMA career, has been cleared of any wrongdoing in getting a fighter's license in Florida.

The question asked by the Florida commission was whether Fox, who fought in Florida in March, had obtained a license fraudulently. She was given her license in Florida after saying she had a license in California. She was given a receipt for her application in California, and thought that was a license. Now, Florida has cleared her, opening the door for her to apply for another license there.

And it appears she will need one. Allanna Jones has agreed to a match-up with Fox for May 24 bout with Championship Fighting Alliance.

    • Alexander Gustafsson posts a picture of his fight-ruining cut (Picture)

(The Mauler)Alexander Gustafsson's fight with Gegard Mousasi was called off because of a cut on Gustafsson's face. He posted a picture of that cut on his website.

He sustained the cut during wrestling practice last week. Gustaffson said he lost his balance and hit his eyebrow. The cut received three stitches. He was ready to fight until the doctors told him he couldn't compete.

The problem with the cut is not so much its size or depth, but its location. If it was reopened in a fight, it's unlikely the fight would go on because the blood would impair Gustafsson's vision to a point that it would make the fight unfair. A cut like that would open with ease, too.

So now the UFC turns to Ilir Latifi, Gustafsson's training partner, to fight Gegard Mousasi in a main event.

    • Watch Anderson Silva visit a wheelchair-bound boy, try not to cry (Video)

You may want to get the tissues handy for this one. UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva heard about Joao Pedro, an active young man who is suffering with a disease of his legs. Joao Pedro has been in a wheelchair for the last nine months, and Silva is his idol. Watch what happens when Silva drops in on Joao Pedro and gives the young man not just a bunch of gear and goodies, but some heartfelt words. It doesn't matter that the words are in Portuguese. You can sense the feelings behind them.

See? I told you to get the tissues.

    • (Getty)The question of this week has been will Alexander Gustafsson would be allowed to fight Gegard Mousasi on Saturday after he sustained a cut in training. We don't have to wonder any longer. As was first reported by MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani, the Swedish MMA Federation announced that Gustafsson will not be cleared to fight at UFC on Fuel 9 on Saturday.

Here's what they had to say:

The SMMAF Medical Committee has today reviewed the circumstances regarding Gustafsson and his injury. The SMMAF Medical Committee recognizes that a competitor cannot be medically cleared earlier than the day before the match. However, bearing in mind that a correct medical examination that met the regulatory demands has been performed, nothing in the SMMAF regulations hinders the SMMAF Medical Committee from making a decision to stop Gustafsson from competing. As it is clear that Alexander Gustafsson will not be fit to compete as planned and cannot be medically cleared on Friday the 5th of April, the SMMAF Medical Committee has today decided that Alexander Gustafsson will not be allowed to participate in the planned match on April 6th.

[Also: MMA fighter Pat Curran endured plenty of punishment on his road to the top]

Basically, the commission's medical committee looked at his cut today and decided it wouldn't be miraculously healed by Saturday. The cut is reportedly under his left eyebrow. If it were to break open during the bout, which is a likely occurrence in a fight, the bout would be in danger. Cuts on the eyebrow bleed into fighters' eyes and impair their vision. It's the right move by the commission.

But it being the right move doesn't make it any easier on Gustafsson or the UFC. For Gustafsson, his fight with Mousasi was supposed to be a stepping stone to a title shot. And the UFC now doesn't have Sweden's most popular fighter fighting on a card in Stockholm. They can try to cobble together a main event on four days notice in Europe, but it won't be easy to get a fighter is healthy, who can make weight and get to Sweden on such short notice.

UPDATE: UFC president Dana White tweeted that they did find a new opponent for Mousasi. He will face Swedish fighter Ilir Latifi, a teammate of Gustafsson's who is 7-2 and is riding a three fight win streak. This will be Latifi's UFC debut, and the fight will remain in the main event spot. However, it will go three rounds, not five as the Gustafsson-Mousasi bout was scheduled for.

    • (Instagram)As we mentioned on Monday, Saturday's main event UFC bout between Gegard Mousasi and Alexander Gustafsson could be in trouble because of a facial laceration suffered by Gustafsson. Wanderlei Silva saw this news, and seized upon it to play an April Fool's Joke that wasn't really all that funny.

He tweeted this info late Monday afternoon:

No one from the UFC confirmed that Silva was taking Gustafsson's place, but Silva kept playing up the "joke." He tweeted news stories about him taking the fight. Even Mousasi tweeted about it:

But on Tuesday morning, Silva admitted it was a joke. He posted the above picture on his Instagram account, with the caption:

I catch you wand the best April first ever!! But I would like this to be true!!!

Ummm, OK. For one, is that funny? The MMA website Middle Easy pulled a good April Fool's Day prank by redesigning their website as if it was 1996. Hulu changed all their show titles to fake shows like "The Rural Juror" and "Ya Herd? With Perd." But saying you have a fight when you don't?

If Silva wants to say he is next man up for the bout with Mousasi in case Gustafsson can't fight, that's fine. He should just do that. But taking everyone in the MMA world, even a potential opponent, for a ride with a so-called joke? That's not cool, Axe Murderer.

    • Nick Diaz shows off his nunchaku skills (Video)

UFC welterweight Nick Diaz has said he is thinking about retirement or a rematch with Georges St-Pierre. But if he's looking for another challenge, perhaps he can join the World Nunchaku Association? Yes, it's a real thing. They have championships and everything. Diaz showed off his skill with the nunchaku and what looks like a homemade tetherball in this video. It's pretty spectacular.
