    • Jets’ Mangold likely out for Sunday; undrafted rookie could replace him

yahoo_mangold_2FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Nick Mangold's high ankle sprain means that the Jets center is likely out for this Sunday's game in Oakland, leaving undrafted rookie free agent Colin Baxter as the Pro Bowl center's replcement. Baxter, who with his long flowing hair bears a resemblance to Mangold, has an awful lot of catching up to do to take the place of one of the game's best offensive linemen.

      Mangold's advice to Baxter?

"Get a haircut," Mangold said before turning serious. "He's only been here what, two, two-and-a-half weeks? [I'm] just trying to get him to fill him years into the system in a couple days - trying to get him on board, the same page, in case we need to use him. I want the guys around him, if he needs to be called up, to be comfortable with what he's doing. My goal is to get him ready."

The injury to Mangold happened in the first quarter of the Week 2 blowout win over Jacksonville, forcing Baxter into his first NFL action. There were ups and downs as would be expected of a player

    • Jaguars placeholder QB Luke McCown falls apart vs. Jets

      yahoo_mccown

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Luke McCown's 1.8 quarterback rating is more like what a frat boy would blow into a breathalyzer then an actual rating for an NFL quarterback. For the Jaguars quarterback, whom we're assuming was sober for Sunday afternoon's game, being drunk would explain his subpar performance and in particular his four interceptions in a 32-3 loss to the Jets.

The putrid performance by McCown, who was 6-for-19 for 59 yards with four interceptions, may in fact be a blessing in disguise. The battle may have already been lost when Blaine Gabbert entered in the fourth quarter for his NFL debut, but the war looks like one he can clearly help them win.

McCown's performance necessitated the change as the Jacksonville offense had just a Josh Scobee 55-yard field goal in the first quarter to show for its efforts. When asked about his performance, McCown seemed surprised at the poor display.

"It was one of those deals where it was nothing they were doing. I was just off today,"

    • NFL retirees suing again over benefits disputes

      yahoo_ellergroup

A group of retired NFL players, including Hall of Famers such as Chuck Bednarik, are suing the league, the player's association and individual players such as New England quarterback Tom Brady over the issue of benefits for retired players.

The plaintiffs, who number 28 in all, filed on Tuesday a class action lawsuit in federal court in Minneapolis and are being represented by attorney Michael D. Hausfeld.

"Someone negotiated for the right of retirees who had no right to do so," Hausfeld told Yahoo! Sports. "Benefits that should have gone to retired players were sacrificed during negotiations for the interests of active players."

Before the league entered into a lockout this past winter over the terms of its Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), it had acknowledged to Hausfeld and the retired players that there were "deficiencies" in the current package. The Legacy Fund, which pays $62 million dollars per year to disabled players for each of the next 10 years, for a total of $620

    • Ines Sainz returns to Jets practice for the first time since 2010 incident

yahoo_ines_sainz2FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — On Tuesday afternoon, the Jets were business as usual in the handling of their skintight visitor as television reporter Ines Sainz was back at the Jets facility. Just a year ago, Sainz's last visit to the team facility created back-page headlines and led to the team being labeled as "Animal House" by some in the media.

A reporter from the Mexican media outlet TV Azteca, Sainz was attending her first Jets practice since receiving catcalls and some unexpected attention last September prior to an interview with quarterback Mark Sanchez. Given the national attention the incident drew, from outrage of the reportedly inappropriate behavior of the players and the coaching staff towards Sainz to criticism from women's rights advocates over Sainz's risqué attire, the Jets chose to treat this as a routine visit.

"Business as usual," team spokesman Bruce Speight told Yahoo! Sports. "Ines is welcome at our facility to cover our team any time."

    • Joe McKnight, and the physics behind a blocked punt

Yahoo_McKnightFLORHAM PARK, N.J. — It was the changing moment of the Jets dramatic 27-24 comeback win over the Cowboys on Sunday night as, with five minutes left in the game, Joe McKnight dove full body to get his hand on Mat McBriar's punt. Isaiah Trufant, who was on the Jets practice squad just two days earlier, collected the bouncing ball and ran in for an 18-yard touchdown to make it a 24-24 game.

For the Jets, he was McKnight in shining armor, but from a scientific point of view, it was an incredible athletic feat.

The physics behind this play proves the difficulty of the challenge for McKnight, who ran unmolested through the heart of the Cowboys line and managed to stop on a dime, in harnessing his 5-11 frame in extending his body to get his hand on the ball. And McKnight, a former star running back at USC and the Jets' fourth-round pick last year, managed to do all this at full speed without making contact with the punter, which would have been a likely penalty.

      "McKnight never stopped. He

    • Mark Sanchez raises funds for families of 9/11 victims with new T-shirt

yahoo_sanchez_911Mark Sanchez's fashion statement in the September issue of GQ was labeled by Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers as "embarrassing,"but there is nothing to blush over with his current apparel dabble. Earlier this week, the Jets quarterback launched a line of t-shirts to aid The Benefit Fund, which provides assistance to first responders who have been killed in the line of duty.

With a tip of the helmet to the movie Backdraft, the front of the shirt is emblazoned with the firefighting phrase "You Go, We Go." On the back of the shirts is Sanchez's name and his No. 6. White pants not yet available.

He was inspired in part by his father, Nick, who was a firefighter in Orange County, Calif. for 34 years.

"To mark the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, I wanted to launch an FDNY shirt that pays tribute to the brave first responders who, like my father, risk their lives in the line of duty on a regular basis," Sanchez told Yahoo! Sports. "All of the proceeds raised from the sale of the T-shirt benefit

    • NBC affiliates pass on Obama, hope to score with the Packers

      yahoo_packers_whitehouse

Two NBC affiliates in Wisconsin have decided to choose the kickoff to the NFL regular season rather than President Obama's game plan on job creation. The president addresses the nation Thursday night at 7 p.m. ET before a joint session of Congress to talk about the unemployment rate, which continues to stand at 9.1 percent.

But WTMJ-4 in Milwaukee, along with a sister station in Green Bay, has decided to not carry the president's speech, which could potentially conflict with the Packers' 8:30 p.m. kickoff as they begin defense of their Super Bowl title against the New Orleans Saints.

Steve Wexler, executive vice president for television and radio operations of WTMJ, writes on the station's website that the Packers will be shown on the NBC network channel and the jobs speech on the cable affiliate.

"We are carrying the president on channel 4.2, which is also available on Time Warner cable channel 999. The Packers programming will be carried on channel 4.1 (Time Warner channel 4 and

      yahoo_ryans

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — It is brother-versus-brother, but this time, there may not be a laugh reel.

Last year, when New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan faced twin brother and then-Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Rob in Cleveland, the two exchanged jokes and gags through the media. The week leading up to the match-up was a one-liner's dream, with Rex and Rob trading barbs.

This time with the anniversary of September 11th and their father's public battle with cancer, the comedy is being rolled back.

It is the right thing for the brother Ryans to do, despite the chuckles last year produced. It even got to the point in the days prior to the game in Cleveland, Rex Ryan walked to the podium with a pillow under his shirt and a blonde wig on, clearly imitating his twin brother. Rex proceeded to answer questions under the guise of being his brother, a guffaw moment if there ever was one.

But Rob Ryan doesn't anticipate Rex taking too many jabs this time around. The game will be played on the

    • Joe Paterno opens Season 46 as Penn State’s eye in the sky

Win No. 402 came a little differently today for Joe Paterno, who looked on the press box as Penn State thumped Indiana State, 41-7, to open Paterno's 46th season as head coach. Not by his own choice, of course — strictly doctor's orders.

"I really probably could have [coached from the sideline] today but the doc didn't want me to do it," said Paterno, 84, who was hospitalized with hip and pelvic injuries and being run over by one of his own players in a preseason practice. "They're afraid I won't get out of the way and maybe something fluky would happen and I'm still sore."

      Earlier in the week, Paterno told the media it was "probably 50/50" whether he'd be on the sideline or stranded up top, and not for the first time due to "something fluky." The most notable exile came after Paterno suffered a broken leg in November, 2006, when one of his players took him out along the sideline. Paterno infamously rode a scooter into games for the rest of the season.{YSP:MORE}

    • It was four years in the making, but for Michigan State's Arthur Ray Jr., the wait was worth it. After battling cancer for much of his college career, Ray stepped onto the field at Spartan Stadium for the first time in the Spartans' 28-6 win over Youngstown State on Friday night. He was a surprise starter as a touching gesture from the Spartans' coaches and played in the first play from scrimmage before being removed.

"I had butterflies two hours before the game. I was like, man I miss this feeling," Ray said. "I have missed this feeling for so long. I haven't experienced this for so long."

In April, 2007, the then senior in high school was three months removed from playing in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl and two months before had signed his letter of intent to play for the Spartans. Ray Jr. should have been enjoying his last weeks before graduation; instead, the Chicago native was diagnosed with cancer on his left leg bone below the knee. Chemotherapy and surgery followed and
