    • Rookie Spotlight: Kyrie Irving

      Kyrie Irving (Getty Images)

      Kyrie Irving — PG, 19 years old; 6-3, 191

      ORtg: 113.1 (269), Usg: 30.9% (28), Pace: 69.3 (52)

      Pace-adjusted, per-40 stats: 24.1 ppg, 5.9 apg, 4.7 rpg, 2.0 spg, 0.8 bpg, 2.3 threes

Efficiency: 70% TS, 57% on twos, 46% on threes, 1.17 points per possession, 17.1% TO

If there's a future star to be had in this draft, Irving is it. The most complete player in this class, he possesses the court vision, awareness, and intelligence needed to lead a proficient NBA offense. Irving has a keen sense of where his teammates are in both transition and half-court sets, and his body control and quick first step afford him the added threat to break defenses down off the dribble-drive. His ability to finish with his left hand at the rim is second to none (.720), and his knack for drawing fouls almost at will (9.4 free throw attempts per 40 minutes) ensures a steady stream of easy points. More than 30 percent of Irving's points came at the line, and his free-throw rate of 68 percent ranked third amongst drafted prospects.

    • Position Primer: Power Forward/Center

Position Primers: PG | SG | SF | FC

This year’s crop of big men is noticeably deeper than it’s ever been, with upwards of 25 power forwards and centers primed to come off the board by the end of the fourth round. The norm has shifted, and instead of reaching for a center early due to positional scarcity and the requisite Y! roster requirements, you’ll now find yourself passing up a few so you don’t end up with a roster full of them. To avoid redundancy, what you’ll find below are tiered rankings of any and all notable players with eligibility at power forward, center, or both.

By way of Basketball Monster, here’s a projection of the value distribution for the top 30 power forwards and centers this season:

Position averages, top 25 power forwards in year-end Yahoo! rank
      10-11 - 50% FG, 79% FT, 0.5 3PM, 17.2 PTS, 8.5 REB, 2.4 AST, 1.9 TO, 1.0 STL, 1.1 BLK
      09-10 - 50% FG, 78% FT, 0.5 3PM, 17.4 PTS, 8.7 REB, 2.4 AST, 1.9 TO, 1.0 STL, 1.0 BLK

Position averages, top 25 centers in year-end

Position Primers: PG | SG | SF | FC

There’s plenty to like at the small forward position, starting right at the top with the 1-2 of LeBron James and Kevin Durant. That pairing will give you a pretty good idea of what to expect as you scan through this list - a melting pot of shooting guard and power forward eligible players who offer diverse skill sets and a wide range of statistical contributions. You’ll find your scorers (Granger, Gay, Johnson, DeRozan), your rebounders (Smith, Wallace, Odom), your distributors (Iguodala, Diaw, Turkoglu), and a little bit of everything in between.

By way of Basketball Monster, here’s a projection of the value distribution for the top 30 small forwards this season:

Position averages, top 25 small forwards in year-end Yahoo! rank
      10-11 - 46% FG, 79 FT%, 1.3 3PM, 15.7 PTS, 5.7 REB, 2.7 AST, 1.8 TO, 1.1 STL, 0.7 BLK
      09-10 - 46% FG, 81% FT, 1.2 3PM, 18.2 PTS, 5.8 REB, 2.9 AST, 2.1 TO, 1.2 STL, 0.6 BLK

The rankings below are for nine-category roto leagues.

    • Position Primer: Shooting Guard

Position Primers: PG | SG | SF | FC

While the shooting guard position finds only three eligible players inside the top-15, it more than makes up for its surprising lack of star power with astounding depth. You’ll find the middle rounds laden with high-upside off-guards with the potential to outperform their ADP’s by a considerable margin. This is a group you should feel comfortable waiting on, especially with the added risk of injury/decline that comes with many of the position’s elite (Kobe, Monta, Gordon). You’re looking for points from this group; in particular, high-efficient scorers who hit their fair share of threes. The later rounds features a nice collection of pickpockets in case you find yourself short on steals.

By way of Basketball Monster, here’s a projection of the value distribution for the top 30 shooting guards this season:

Position averages, top 25 shooting guards in year-end Yahoo! rank
      10-11 - 45% FG, 81% FT, 1.5 3PM, 16.1 PTS, 4.1 REB, 3.5 AST, 1.9 TO, 1.2 STL, 0.4

    • Position Primer: Point Guard

Position Primers: PG | SG | SF | FC

They’ll go fast and they’ll go early, and if you wait too long to stake your claim on an elite point guard then there’s a good chance you’ll come to regret it later. As many as 15 point guards will come off the board by the end of Round 4, and from there the drop-off in talent is considerable. When planning out your draft just keep in mind that you’ll more than likely end up reaching for one at some point, and stretching a bit for Jrue Holiday or Ty Lawson in the fourth round is far more preferable than being cornered into Brandon Jennings or Darren Collison in the eighth.

Those in head-to-head leagues might want to approach this situation differently. With almost every manager forced to reach early and often or risk losing out on point guard, the position gets vastly overvalued in the process. This makes punting assists (and/or steals) an optimal strategy, one that doesn’t force you to choose between overall value and positional scarcity. As
