Preview: New York Rangers at Buffalo Sabres, 7 p.m. ET

A win puts the Sabres two points back of eighth-place New York. A loss and they're six points and four wins back, an insurmountable gap with only three games to play. Is this it for Buffalo?

Preview: Dallas Stars at St. Louis Blues, 8 p.m. ET

Four Western Conference games tonight. This is the only one that really means much of anything. The Stars are still rolling, and with a win in St. Louis, they can take over eighth in the West. The Blues sit sixth, but this is their game in hand on LA and San Jose in fourth and fifth. If they want home ice in the first round, they need a win.

Preview: Nashville Predators at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30 p.m. ET

Is anyone picking Nashville in this one? Anyone? Bueller? The Blackhawks are 4-0-1 in their last five in the United Center, they've won all four games against Nashville this year, they're 8-0-1 in their last nine, and Nashville is icing a very, very inexperienced lineup.

    • Hockey Hugs: Kiss Huggins strikes again; Brendan Shana-hug; Jay Nosehill

Hockey Hugs is a feature that celebrates the best in hugging from around the sport of hockey, because who doesn't love a good hug now and then? Have you seen a particularly good hug photo lately? Send it to puckdaddyblog@yahoo.com or tweet it to @HarrisonMooney.

Welcome once again to hockey hugs, the Puck Daddy feature where everyone takes the body.

The trade deadline has come and gone, and it's yielded some potential new hugging combinations, such as Jaromir Jagr alongside Brad Marchand and Tyler Seguin. Look at them. Marchand is loving it. One hand around Jagr, the other on Seguin's backside. He's the envy of every woman in Boston.

While some teams are getting used to their new combinations and preparing to be hugging in the postseason, however, other teams are getting ready to hug for the last time. Soon, they'll be clutching wedges and irons instead of one another, wondering what could have been different.

But one team that won't is the Toronto Maple Leafs, who will have to do their best to remember what it's like to hug in the postseason. Do you hug harder? Do you hug for longer? Do you grab your nearest teammate and meow like a cat?

Here's Mike Kostka and John Michael-Liles trying that last idea out.

Coming up: more of the best hugs from the last two weeks, because we totally need them right now.

    • The big story in Edmonton Monday was the exit of Steve Tambellini, fired after five years of running the ship in Edmonton. In his place came new General Manager Craig MacTavish, four years to the day after Tambellini fired him as head coach.

But that wasn't the only story. Up at the podium to announce the changes, President of Hockey Operations Kevin Lowe starred in one of the worst press conferences in recent memory, bickering with the local media and even somehow managing to insult the majority of the Oilers' fanbase.

Asked how fans were going to be reassured by a changing of the guard that really just involved a shuffling of hats, Lowe put his foot directly into his mouth, differentiating between the fans that attend games and those losers who sit on their duffs and watch the game on television for free.

[Also: Raffi Torres keeps it clean one year after Marian Hossa hit]

"We have two types of fans," he said. "We have paying customers and we have people that watch the game that we still care about, but certainly the people who go to the games and support, we spend a lot of time talking to them, delivering our message."

On Wednesday, Lowe and co. apologized.

    • NHL’s outdoor stadium series: Why it’s a bad idea

If the NHL's plan was to get NHLPA special assistant to the executive director Mathieu Schneider into a half dozen alumni games in three months, the stadium series they're reportedly planning to announce for 2013-14 has to be seen as a failure. As a former member of the Red Wings, Ducks, Rangers, Islanders, and Canucks, among other teams, if each of the six outdoor affairs is preceded by an alumni game, Schneider could lace up in nearly every single one.

But only nearly -- only five of six. He never played for the Penguins or Blackhawks, so if there's an alumni game at Soldier Field, he won't be in it. Way to blow it, NHL.

Of course, it's probably safe to say the league wasn't thinking of Schneider when they put their reported plan together. Don't be silly. They were thinking about money.

Which is why I hate this plan.

    • Pass or Fail: NHL’s third playoff commercial, ‘Characters’

The NHL rolled out its new line of "Because It's the Cup" playoffs commercials two weeks ago. In the first ad, they showcased the quirkiness of some of the fans, from The Green Men to Senatron to that incredible Paul MacLean lookalike. In the second, they showcased the intensity of the players as they try to stare down their own pregame jitters.

Ad number three is like if those two ads met, totally did it, and had a baby. This one's about the quirkiness of the players.

And people say NHLers don't have personality.

According to the NHL, "Characters" will make its debut on NBC Sports Network Wednesday night during the Buffalo Sabres/Boston Bruins game.

I can't say enough about the brilliance of opening with a high-pitched Ilya Bryzgalov saying, "It's hockey. It's only a game." What a great tone-setter.

From there, we meet the Sedins and their creepy, synchro-twin routine, the infamous mountain man headshots of Brent Burns and Greg Zanon, Jason Spezza's remarkably dweeby laugh, a little undercarriage humour from BizNasty, and Pavel Datsyuk and Teemu Selanne being as charmingly perfect as ever.

It's a good entry point for non-diehards, which, as we know, was part of the strategy this time around. These ads are supposed to feature a "welcoming entry point", and this one certainly does. (Although if they really wanted a welcoming entry point, it should have just been 30 seconds of Teemu Selanne smiling at the camera. Swoon.)

As a diehard, however, I can't help but think that there's so much more that could have gone in there, from Keslurking to Steve Ott tonguing a visor and beyond. Did the NHL go far enough? Or are there some glaring omissions?

    • Sad announcing: Avalanche announcer Mike Haynes is a master no-seller

The Colorado Avalanche fell to the Columbus Blue Jackets in overtime Monday night, and while that fanbase can't be shocked when their club loses a game these days, it's always difficult to stomach a loss that happens the way this one did. Thanks to a late Jamie McGinn powerplay goal, the Avalanche led this game 3-2 with under two minutes to go. But only 35 seconds after McGinn put them ahead, R.J. Umberger tied the game for Columbus. The Blue Jackets went on to win in the final minute of overtime.

That's disappointing, and if you want an example of how disappointing, just listen to the incredible no-sell from Colorado's play-by-play guy, Mike Haynes:

"2-on-1 Jackets, but Duchene is flying back! Foligno shot! Score. And the Blue Jackets win in overtime, four to three."

Safe to assume he did the Charlie Brown walk all the way to his car that night. This may as well have been the final scene of "Bambi".

("Bambi's mom into the clearing. Hunter shot! Score. And Bambi is left to contemplate the brutality of man.")

It's the anti-call of the year, but don't think that this moment was just a one-off. People like to pick on Jack Edwards for occasionally appearing to have a rooting interest, but Haynes has shown his colours with these barely audible goal calls on more than one occasion.

They're amazing. Let's take a moment to appreciate the patented Mike Haynes no-sell.

    • Mike Green autographs ‘tweet’ of Capitals fan that insulted him on Twitter

If you're looking for evidence that the Washington Capitals are drawing motivation for their late-season resurgence from a desire to make the critics eat their words, look no further than Mike Green.

Way back on March 30, with Green having scored just one goal in 11 games and only 3 on the season, he received an unkind tweet from a Capitals fan that questioned his interest in winning:

Later that day, Green scored the game-winner with under a minute to go in the Capitals 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres. Then, shortly after the game, feeling the goal was only part of the response, Green responded to Amanda's tweet:

Suck on that, Amanda! (We'll forgive the Charlie Sheen-ism because the Caps did, in fact, win.)

Empowered by crushing this fan on Twitter -- just straight-up destroying her -- Green went on a tear. He's scored 7 goals in the 9 games since Amanda suggested he didn't care. He cares, all right. He cares about proving Amanda wrong.

That Amanda -- who does she even think she is? She thinks she's so great, but she so totally isn't. Pfft. Amanda.

I'll bet Green wrote "Amanda" on his stick. I'll bet he looks at her name before every shift and is energized by the rage he feels. I'll bet it's better than smelling salts.

Anyway. That's normally where this Twitter back-and-forth would have ended, but Amanda took it one step further.

    • NHL 3 Stars: Shutouts for Lundqvist, Enroth; Stars win fifth straight

According to the NESN broadcast, the Carolina Hurricanes' powerplay is so bad, it transcends the 30-team NHL. [Reddit]

No. 1 Star: Brenden Morrow, Pittsburgh Penguins

Morrow was in on all 3 goals in the Penguins 3-1 win over the Florida Panthers, assisting on the first, scoring the second, then icing the game with an empty-netter. Beau Bennett added two assists as well.

No. 2 Star: Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers

It was a goaltender's duel on Long Island, and Lundqvist came out on top, making 29 saves for the 1-0 overtime victory. Dan Girardi was the unlikely hero, converting after a slick little saucer pass from Derick Brassard:

    • Watch Justin Peters disgust Jaromir Jagr with sick glove save (Video)

Jaromir Jagr extended his point streak to four games Saturday with an assist in the first period of Boston Bruins' 4-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. He spent the rest of the night looking for more.

His best chance came midway through the second period. With the Bruins on a 5-on-3, David Krejci found Jagr all alone at the side of the Hurricanes net for what looked like an easy one. But that's when Justin Peters came across and made the undisputed save of the night:

Jagr's disgust is appropriate. It's a disgusting save.

Peters hasn't had a lot of hero moments this year in Carolina. He's 3-8-0 with a save percentage of .902 and a GAA of 3.02. So this probably felt especially good.

It was a huge save for the Hurricanes, keeping the game at 1-1. Just a few minutes later, Jiri Tlusty would put Carolina ahead. Peters was named the first star in the eventual 4-2 win.
