For a couple moments, the best player in college football was on the turf in pain, holding his knee.

Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M's freshman quarterback who is the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy, had his knee twisted in a weird way as he was tackled at the end of a first quarter run against Missouri. He immediately grabbed his left knee, and anyone who enjoys college football had to think the worst.

Or, at least very good by non-SEC standards.

People get angry about the SEC getting too much hype, but then something like Florida's 37-26 win at Florida State happens, and it reinforces that the hype is completely justified.

The upset victory to end Mike Leach's first season was also very good for Leach. He had a bonus in his contract that paid him $25,000 for winning the Apple Cup game against Washington.

But Leach apparently felt like spreading the wealth at Valhalla Bar and Grill in Pullman.

The college football career touchdown record probably doesn't get the hoopla it deserves.

The most basic goal of all football players is to get in the end zone, and nobody in FBS history has done that more often than Wisconsin running back Montee Ball.

Ball broke the record, set by Miami (Ohio) running back Travis Prentice (perhaps that's why this record isn't celebrated as much as it should be ... could you have guessed Prentice held that record?), with a 17-yard run wide right in the first quarter against Penn State. That was Ball's 79th touchdown.

The play was really an example of how much Ball's teammates have helped him get those 79 scores. The blocking on the perimeter was tremendous and Ball wasn't touched on the play. He did a nice job to stay in bounds to get the final few yards and the record. Wisconsin running backs now hold two of the most important records in FBS history. Ron Dayne has more rushing yards than any other FBS player.

The Buckeyes, in Urban Meyer's first year with them, knew they weren't going to a bowl game and couldn't play for a national title because of NCAA sanctions. What they could do was win all their games. That goal was met with a 26-21 victory over Michigan. It is the sixth undefeated season for Ohio State, and only the second since 1968.

"It will go down as one of the great teams in Ohio State history," Meyer told ABC on the field after the game.

And while that may be true, it has to feel a little bittersweet.

Mauti suffered a knee injury last week and will not be able to play today against Wisconsin. This was going to be the last game of his college career.

Penn State football tweeted a picture of its helmets today and Mauti's No. 42 will be prominently displayed on the side. That's quite a way to honor the Nittany Lions' emotional leader.
