NO. 2, CHARLIE WARD

To have the type of athletic career Charlie Ward did takes a nearly unfathomable skill set.

Some skills translate between playing quarterback in football and point guard in basketball. Speed, vision, ability to make quick decisions, leadership – they work well in both positions. But just because you're good at one doesn't mean you can do both. You couldn't stick Aaron Rodgers at point guard and expect much. Chris Paul is a magician at point guard, but you might not want him under center in football.

Ward had an astonishing career that probably doesn't get enough attention.

(USA Today Sports Images)Vanderbilt coach James Franklin is excitable, and that's one thing we like about him. Sometimes he grabs the mascot after a win and sprints into a locker room to celebrate (good). Sometimes he says he doesn't hire an assistant coach before sizing up his wife (not so good).

We appreciate his style. In an era where bore is more, Franklin provides some interesting moments. Thank goodness.

So we're not going to get on him too much for trying to apparently send a general rah-rah message to recruits by placing Vanderbilt on a pedestal, even if it was getting some eyebrow raises on Twitter.

What happened in 2012
This is life at LSU: Expectations are such that a 10-3 record, with all three losses against very good teams in close games including two losses in the final minute, is just not good enough.

Had LSU held on to beat Alabama, the 2012 season would have looked a lot different. But A.J. McCarron led a late touchdown drive, and instead of an 11-1 regular-season record and a trip to the SEC championship game and likely a BCS title game on the line, the Tigers were relegated to a December bowl game. And they lost on a last-second field goal to Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. So had LSU’s defense gotten one more stop after holding McCarron and Alabama down most of the game, this might be about how well the Tigers are equipped to defend their national title.

Les Miles understands the life of an LSU coach, and signed a lucrative seven-year extension after an out-of-the-blue talk with Arkansas about that job. He’ll have the same expectations in 2013 that he did in 2012, which is that anything less than an SEC division title, at absolute minimum, won’t be celebrated in Baton Rouge.

NO. 3, TERRY BAKER

When Terry Baker finished his career as a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and a point guard for a team that made a deep run in the NCAA tournament, he had to think that dual feat would never be duplicated.

Baker got some company in the Heisman winner/basketball star club many years later, from someone you have probably guessed will make an appearance later in the week on this list. The fact that Baker had company on the list doesn't take away from his greatness, including one accomplishment that might never be duplicated.

(USA Today Sports Images)After the 1998 season, Phillip Fulmer was on top of the college football world.

He won a national title at Tennessee a year after Peyton Manning left, which is a pretty remarkable feat. He was still coaching the Volunteers to 10-win seasons as recently as 2007. Tennessee played in the SEC Championship Game that year.

Fulmer was fired after the 2008 season. He has a 152-52 career coaching record. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. Tennessee has a 7-6 campaign and three losing seasons since Fulmer was fired. Yet, he hasn't resurfaced with another job.

News comes that Fulmer has a job offer, but it's not one you'd expect for a hall-of-fame coach.

(USA Today Sports Images)By staying and being one of the faces of Penn State's surprising post-sanctions 2012 season, quarterback Matt McGloin earned a special spot in Nittany Lions history.

He also earned a pretty unusual and somewhat random honor that will give him a permanent place at Penn State.

On Penn State's Worthington Scranton campus, the new baseball field will be named Matt McGloin Field according to OnwardState.com.

Sit down before you go any further. Really, sit. You won't believe this.

OK. Here's the news: College football is passing up a chance to make a dollar off something.

I know, it's shocking. In an era in which a historic conference in the Midwest tries to convince us Rutgers and Maryland are awesome fits fans would love, and they will aspire to go play in the game's most storied and precious game with a TV company's name painted in enormous letters as the 50-yard line, college football is giving up a chance to make a buck. Or so it says for now.

ESPN.com reports that there will not be a title sponsor to college football's new four-team playoff. Mind blown.

(USA Today Sports Images)We saw the Johnny Manziel photo making the rounds on the Internet yesterday, with the supposed tattoo of the Longhorns logo on his ribcage. Something about it looked off, and sure enough, the Texas A&M quarterback stepped in to set the record straight.
