The brilliance of Pat Summerall was always what he didn't say. He didn't have to be the loudest or most verbose guy in the broadcast booth. But he was the best.

The Dallas Morning News reported that Summerall has died at the age of 82. The report said he died in the hospital where he was recovering from hip surgery.

Summerall was a former NFL player. He was most memorably a New York Giants kicker, playing in the legendary 1958 title game against the Colts, and before that he kicked for the Detroit Lions and Chicago Cardinals. He was a good kicker in the NFL. Then he became a great announcer. He was one of the NFL's distinctive voices as the league grew by leaps and bounds. That might not be coincidental.

Summerall and Tom Brookshier, and then later (and more famously) Summerall and John Madden were the soundtrack of every big Sunday game in the NFL for decades. Summerall and Madden in particular made calling a big NFL game an art form.

Summerall, whose playing career spanned from 1952-61, and whose broadcasting career went from 1962 to 2002, was an icon in the NFL for many decades, especially behind the microphone.

SPRING GAME REVELATIONS

NO. 4, THE INJURY BUG HITS A FEW TEAMS

There can't be many worse feelings as a football player than suffering a major injury in spring football.

No injuries are fun, obviously. Suffering a major injury in the heat of the game is more understandable than in a practice six months before the season opener.

And for the teams who suddenly have holes in the lineup to fill because of an injury in March or April, it's a tough blow for them as well.

The most notable injury of the spring was probably Arizona receiver Austin Hill.

North Carolina debuted some new uniforms this past weekend. They're nice, with dark numbers on the typical Carolina colors.

There was also an alternate black jersey. It's a really cool look, with a black helmet as well. And as we know, nothing gets college football players more excited than a new black alternate uniform.

Since those multi-purpose venues have gone the way of AstroTurf, football games in baseball stadiums have become a quaint event. Bowl games in San Francisco and New York have been built around that premise.

The old Busch Stadium in St. Louis was an old-fashioned stadium that hosted football and baseball. The new Busch Stadium wants in on the football action.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced that it will host the first college football game at Busch Stadium, between the Southeast Missouri State and Southern Illinois on Sept. 21.

That will be a fun game with a lot of local alumni from both sides invested in the rivalry, but it's also fair to wonder if this is a bit of a test drive for bigger football events in the stadium, which opened in 2006.

(USA Today Sports Images)Oregon has committed at least one major violation. The school and NCAA both agree upon that.

There's still more to be sorted out. The sides can't yet agree on whether the $25,000 in eyebrow-raising money paid to Willie Lyles for "oral scouting reports," which was reported by Yahoo! Sports in 2011, is a major violation or not. And it's unclear what punishment will result from the case.

But, after the Oregonian received 515 pages of documents on the case four months after it requested them from the school, the paper reported that the case does contain at least one major violation. There's no disputing that, and although it might not be devastating for Oregon, "major violations" is never good news.

The Oregonian said that most of the violations listed in the summary disposition memos happened when Chip Kelly was head coach. Kelly, of course, left to the NFL this January.

SPRING GAME REVELATIONS

NO. 5, OKLAHOMA, USC, FLORIDA STATE UNDECIDED AT QB

Most coaches don't want to name a new starting quarterback after spring ball for a few reasons, notably motivation and competition.

At three power schools – Oklahoma, USC and Florida State – it's looking more like there will be an actual competition heading into training camp, rather than coaches just proclaiming it open as a motivational ploy.

All three schools seem unsettled at quarterback after the spring, but the good news is all three have great options.

(USA Today Sports Images)Some inclement weather delayed Alabama's trip to the White House to visit President Barack Obama until Monday, but the BCS champion Crimson Tide made it. They knew how to get there.

This was the celebration of Alabama's third national title in four years.

"They are starting to learn their way around the White House," Obama said. "I was thinking about having some cots for them here, they're here so often. But we couldn't find any that were big enough."

There's just something that doesn't feel quite right about another team's coach saying it.

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury fully endorsed Texas A&M's Manziel shipping off to the NFL after this season, in comments to the Austin American-Statesman.
