Victory's sweet nectar: David felled the Philistine. The U.S. hockey team beat the Soviets and won Olympic gold. Once in a while, the opponent has gotten the best of the Harlem Globetrotters. Heck, some guy even killed Superman once. We all suspected the moment would come when the Nats joined the rest of the major leagues in the victory column. Ever since they plucked him from the Padres organization via the Mexican League before the 2007 season, Joakim Soria been a rollicking success for the Royals. He made the AL All-Star team and registered 42 saves in '08 and, along the way, was given the nickname "Mexicutioner" by KC fans.

Ask any of the Royals about Soria and they will glow about his character, work habits and confidence. Ask Soria about himself and all of that is communicated, along with a sense of humor and appreciation for all things big — from the Big Unit to Kauffman Stadium's giant scoreboard. And, being from a family with two dentists — his brother and sister, Soria doesn't fear addressing his adult braces.

If you recall a story about a man who got kicked out of Yankee Stadium last August for moving from his seat during the playing of "God Bless America," you also might recall saying the following to yourself: "Well, that sounds like a lawsuit."

Well, Nostradamus, your vision has come to pass.

Backed by New York State's Civil Liberties Union, Bradford Campeau-Laurion is suing the Yankees and the NYPD for throwing him out of the game. He claims to be a victim of political and religious discrimination.

Campeau-Laurion, a 30-year-old resident of Astoria in Queens, said he wanted to use the restroom and didn't feel like waiting for the Kate Smith standard to end. Fans are required to do as per Yankee Stadium rules. Shortly after getting up from his seat, his version of the story goes, security confronted him.

"I then said to [one], 'I don't care about God Bless America. I just need to use the bathroom,' " Campeau-Laurion told New York's CBS-TV affiliate last August. "As soon as I said that,

Mr. Operation: Doctors have sewn up his torn labrum, they've repaired nerve damage in his biceps, comforted his strained triceps, kicked out the bone spurs in his elbow and sent Tommy John there to reconstruct the joint. Chris Carpenter's latest injury, a strained left rib-cage muscle, probably will put him back on the DL.

Carpenter, who was making just his sixth start over the past two-plus seasons, left after three innings of work and a 3-0 lead. He could not say how much time he'll miss.

Major League Baseball read the actions and peered into the mind of Boston ace Josh Beckett before drawing some of its ownconclusions: He's an aggressor, an agitator and a headhunter.

Or so says MLB's vice president for discipline, Bob Watson, who suspended Beckett six games on Tuesday for throwing a pitch near the head of the Angels' Bobby Abreu that preceded a benches-clearing, onfield argument in Anaheim on Sunday.

Further, Beckett's punishment comes for "aggressive actions" after the pitch, which appeared to include jawing with Abreu and Angels manager Mike Scioscia.

Angels hitting coach Mickey Hatcher was also suspended for today's game and fined. Scioscia, along with players Torii Hunter and Justin Speier, also were fined. No other Red Sox personnel were penalized.

A "shocked" Beckett has appealed the suspension and he wouldn't serve it until he gets a hearing. There, you can expect a Supreme Court-worthy argument about intent from the Red Sox and the MLBPA. Beckett didn't
