    • Video: Evan Turner hits 37-foot buzzer beater in Ohio State win

If Ohio State's Evan Turner wasn't your choice for national player of the year before Friday's Big Ten quarterfinal, he will be now. The Buckeyes star drained a 37-foot buzzer beater on Friday afternoon to give OSU a thrilling 69-68 win over arch-rival Michigan.

The Wolverines had taken a two-point lead on a Manny Harris jump shot with 2.2 seconds remaining. After an Ohio State timeout, Turner, who had struggled with his shot in the second half, took the inbounds pass, dribbled upcourt and launched an uncontested shot from two steps beyond the half-court line. The Big Ten Player of the Year kept his right arm raised after the shot in anticipation of it going in. When it did, Turner coolly turned around and waited for his teammates to mob him.

March Madness technically begins next Thursday. Between last night's buzzer beater bank shot by DaSean Butler and Turner's miracle today, the madness has already unofficially begun.

    • Phony Web page claims Donovan McNabb traded to 49ers

According to a dubious Internet site, "Donavon Mcnabb" is getting traded. The real Donovan McNabb(notes) is still very much a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

On Wednesday, a phony ESPN.com page made its way around the Internet with the faux exclusive that the long-time Eagles quarterback was traded to the San Francisco 49ers. The hoax duped some fans, forced members of the media to look into the story and even led to an official denial from the 49ers.

It should never have come to that. A cursory glance of the page reveals that the page was nothing more than a poorly-executed, and spelled, joke:

If you're going to go to the trouble of putting up a decent-looking hoax page, at least go the extra mile and run it through the spelling and grammar check.

      Among the many errors:

      • The proper nouns Donovan ("Donavon"), McNabb ("Mcnabb") and San Francisco ("San Fransisco") are spelled incorrectly in the headline.

      • Datelines are normally written in all caps. This one isn't. On the bright

    • CBS announces NCAA tournament pairings

Familiarity is good. CBS seems to know that, which may be why its announcing teams for the NCAA tournament are almost identical to last year.

We don't need surprises when we flip on the first round of the tournament next Thursday at noon EDT. I like the routine. There will be a brief, uninformative pre-game show in New York featuring Greg Gumbel; a slightly modified intro featuring at least one clip of Christian Laettner's shot playing over the familiar CBS NCAA basketball theme and then a cut to a far-flung locale for the first game of the day, probably with Ian Eagle announcing that he'll take us to our game as soon as it begins.

It's as routine as going to fireworks on July 4th or watching the Detroit Lions lose on Thanksgiving. It's the greatest. Why mess with it?

Thankfully, CBS didn't. Here's the network's list of announcer pairings for the first two rounds of the tournament. It looks quite similar to last year's:

      • Studio: Greg Gumbel, Greg Anthony, Seth Davis

      • Jim Nantz/Clark

The so-called fifth major of the tennis season begins Thursday in Indian Wells, Calif., as 16 of the world's top 20 players take to the courts in the BNP Paribas Open. Billionaire Larry Ellison bought the popular tournament last year (and changed its name from the Pacific Life Open) and a record crowd of motr than 350,000 is expected this year at the 11-day event. Busted Racquet gives you a few things to look out for at the tourney:

      1. Hit for Haiti. On Friday night, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Lindsey Davenport, Justine Henin, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf will take part in a fundraiser Hatian earthquake relief. Federer first organized a "Hit For Haiti" event at the Australian Open and Ellison took over at Indian Wells, recruiting former stars to participate in one of two doubles matches Friday night. The event is sold out and will be broadcast live on The Tennis Channel.

      2. Belgium rising? Tennis tournaments need to add some caveats to its seeding

    • Video: Virginia Tech coach drains half-court shot at ACC tourney

If you're like me, you frequently wonder how much game is still possessed by old college basketball coaches. There's little doubt young guys like Jeff Capel and Dane Fife still got game, but what of the older guard?

We all know know Mike Krzyzewski is one of, if not the, greatest coach of all time and that he also played guard at West Point. But how's his jumpshot at age 63? And Jim Boeheim teaches the zone defense to Syracuse players like Socrates taught philosophy to Plato. But can he still take away the high post in practice?

There are no answers to these questions in this blog post, only a video to confirm that, yes, the skills of older basketball coaches have yet to fully erode. At an ACC tournament shoot-around Wednesday, Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg drained a half-court hookshot that looked, dare I say, Kareem-esque:

Later on his Twitter page, Greenberg boasted that he "displayed his range" at practice and thinks he still "might have eligibility." (Eligibility questions?

    • Jennifer Hudson will sing this year's 'One Shining Moment'

If loving "One Shining Moment" is wrong, then I've never wanted to be right. But with the recent announcement that Oscar and Grammy winner/over-singer Jennifer Hudson will take over the song for this year's NCAA tournament, I may have to reconsider that position.

CBS announced this week that Hudson recorded a new rendition of "OSM" last month and that it will air at the conclusion of the men's national championship game on April 3. She will be the fourth artist to perform the song for the network, following singer/songwriter David Barrett (1987-1993, 2000-2002), Teddy Pendergrass (1994-1999) and Luther Vandross (2002-2009).

It's a pretty obvious choice; Hudson is known for her soaring vocals and inspirational recordings, so "One Shining Moment" is right up her alley. Whether you like it or not, it's impossible to deny that the song is the height of schmaltz. My fear is that Hudson's voice will only intensify that feeling.

To me, the ultimate rendition was from Pendergrass. Even if you

    • NFL RedZone Channel to be available on Verizon cell phones

The NFL RedZone Channel was nearly flawless last season. No commercials, great decisions in when to cut from game to game, a reliable host who keeps the action flowing and never tries to get in the way; the channel made NFL Sundays even more enjoyable than before. But there was just one problem: We couldn't watch it while waiting in line at the grocery store or driving to get our friend from the airport or, heaven forbid, at a should-be-illegal Sunday afternoon wedding.

That won't be a problem any more.

The league signed a new distribution deal with Verizon Wireless that allows the wireless carrier to air live footage of every Sunday game. It's the first time the NFL has given live games rights to a mobile carrier.

As The Wall Street Journal reports:

The deal marks a significant shift in strategy for the NFL, which has never before allowed mobile access to its games on Sunday afternoons. Doing so was long considered by broadcasters to be a threat to the NFL's golden goose-its Sunday

    • Game Point: Andre, Pete, Steffi and Martina will 'Hit for Haiti'

Game Point is Busted Racquet's roundup of facts, figures and links about the tennis world.

Love -- Billionaire Larry Ellison saved the Indian Wells tennis tournament when he purchased the BNP Paribas Open in December. He'll be rewarded with a star-studded field at the most attended non-Grand Slam event. Sixteen of the world's top 20 players are scheduled to play in the main draw, including every top ten man except Juan Martin Del Potro, who is nursing an injury.

15 -- It's hard to imagine a field with Roger, Rafa, Novak and Andy getting overshadowed, but Friday night's charity event, Hit for Haiti, may just do so. There are two doubles matches scheduled, one of which pits Federer and Pete Sampras vs. Nadal and Andre Agassi. (Think the old rivals will beef about the revelations in Agassi's autobiography?) The other isn't so bad either: Martina Navratilova and Justine Henin vs. Lindsey Davenport and Steffi Graf. The exhibitions will be broadcast live on The Tennis Channel at 10:30 p.m.

    • Keith Bulluck gives nine scholarships in honor of Steve McNair

Tennessee Titans linebacker Keith Bulluck(notes) surprised nine high school students Monday night by presenting them with $1,000 in scholarship money in the name of his late teammate Steve McNair(notes).

The scholarships were presented at the 44th annual National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame awards dinner. Bulluck chose nine winners (the same as McNair's jersey number) from among 54 recipients of a separate scholar-athlete award for Middle Tennessee high schoolers. The nine players didn't know about Bulluck's gesture beforehand.

"This was a nice surprise because I don't think any of us knew about it," scholarship winner Juwan Turner told The Tennessean. "[Bulluck] is a role model."

He also took the job of finding scholarship winners quite seriously. The Tennessean reports:

"They all filled out applications and it really was a lot of work picking nine,'' Bulluck said. "I read through all of them, looked at their GPAs, looked at their extracurricular activities, looked

    • Eagles picking up Vick's bonus hurt his starting chances in '10

Few expected the Philadelphia Eagles to sign Michael Vick(notes) last August. Even fewer expected him to stay with the Eagles for a second season. But after the team decided Monday to exercise a $1.5 million roster bonus for the former No. 1 draft pick turned ex con, Vick grew one step closer to staying in Philly for 2010 and not fulfilling his goal of regaining his role as an NFL starter.

It's far from a done deal though. Though the bonus covers $1.5 million of the $5.25 million Vick is scheduled to receive this coming NFL season, there's still a chance the Eagles could trade him before the season begins. The team is reportedly asking for a second round pick, a price which may be too steep this far from week 1. Philadelphia may be biding its time though hoping that teams become more desperate as the season approaches.

Vick would likely welcome such a deal. With Donovan McNabb(notes) looking more likely to return as Philly's starter and Kevin Kolb(notes) still playing the role of
