    • Video: Ed Hochuli’s dissertation on why a fumble is a fumble

To say Ed Hochuli is verbose is like saying the Washington Redskins offense is pathetic. Mere adjectives don't do them justice. Case in point, Hochuli's unnecessarily-wordy explanation of why a Percy Harvin fumble was, indeed, a Percy Harvin fumble.

Let's take his 63-word explanation line by line:

"The ruling on the field is confirmed."

Killing the suspense right off the bat. If you're going to talk for 20 seconds, at least have us hanging on every word.

"Although there was a hand that continued in by the body as the defender pulled the ball away ..."

Is this the start of some Halloween ghost story? A hand? But whose? And by which body?

"... the defender got possession of the ball and, in fact, ..."

Love the literary flourish. Once he starts getting a little older, expect to here some "herewiths" and "henceforths" and

    • Video: Jaguars defenders play hot potato with recovered fumble

As Vince Wilfork has demonstrated this season, there's nothing better than big, sloppy defenders running with the ball. Only slightly less-entertaining though is big, sloppy defenders getting a chance to run with the ball and then getting rid of said ball like it will give them a communicable disease.

Three Jacksonville Jaguars players -- Matt Roth, Terrence Knighton and Clint Session --  ran with a ball after a sack of Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub dislodged it and none seemed particularly keen to rumble toward the end zone. It was like a Keystone Kops play, if the Keystone Kops were 300 pounds and wearing teal.

The NFL.com play-by-play description was written as such:

      (6:41) 8-M.Schaub sacked at HOU 35 for -10 yards (55-C.Session). FUMBLES (55-C.Session), RECOVERED by JAX-90-M.Roth at HOU 30. 90-M.Roth to HOU 25 for 5 yards. Lateral to 96-T.Knighton to HOU 18 for 7 yards. Lateral to 55-C.Session to HOU 8 for 10 yards (23-A.Foster).

That's a generous five yards for

      cardinals world series

The World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals visited their NFL brethren Sunday, bringing the Commissioner's Trophy to the Edward Jones Dome for a pregame ceremony before the St. Louis Rams-New Orleans Saints game.

To reciprocate, Rams defensive end Chris Long paid homage to the baseball team, with a sack dance celebration that brought to mind Albert Pujols and World Series MVP David Freese. Following his first sack of Drew Brees, Long pushed away his teammates, set up in a batting stance and took a home run cut:

Long added another sack in the second half. If Saints coach Sean Payton has any questions about how to stop a big-hitter like that, he should call Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington. I'm sure there's some way to intentionally walk Long.

The presence of the Cardinals seemed to have a magical effect on the winless Rams. Early in the third quarter, the Rams and backup quarterback A.J. Feeley held a 17-0 lead over the Saints. Last week, New Orleans played another winless team

      sparano

Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano put his home up for sale two days after his team blew a 15-point lead to Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos to drop to 0-6, leading to speculation that the end of Sparano's tenure in South Beach might be near. The coach insists the timing is coincidental and that he and his wife, who are empty-nesters, simply want to move closer to the beach.

The five-bedroom, 5,659-square-foot house has gone on and off the market a number of times this year, reports Ben Volin of The Sporting News:

According to a listing on Zillow.com, Sparano originally listed his house for sale on Jan. 13, five days after Ross awarded him with a contract extension through 2013 that would pay him a total of $6 million. He removed the listing in March, re-listed it two weeks later, and removed it from the market again on Sept. 10, two days before the Dolphins opened the regular season against the Patriots.

Sparano originally listed the price at $1.75 million, and put it back on the

      todd haley beard

At the beginning of the month, the Kansas City Chiefs were 0-3, had been outscored by opponents by 92 points and were facing a season without their best offensive and defensive players, who were lost to injury. With a start like that, it's no wonder head coach Todd Haley didn't feel like shaving.

So the third-year coach kept the stubble before Kansas City's fourth game and even brought out a sweat-stained hat he wore during last year's run to an AFC West title. When his team won, Haley kept the beard going. Three weeks later, the defending AFC West champions are riding a three-game winning streak headed into a crucial division matchup with the San Diego Chargers on "Monday Night Football." And Todd Haley still hasn't brought out the razor.

"This thing is getting gnarly," Haley told reporters after the latest win. "It's really uncomfortable."

Haley has said he won't shave until Kansas City loses, a fact which may upset his hair stylist (she commented on it while the coach was getting a

    • The WTA likes to give Caroline Wozniacki stuff for being No. 1

      wozniacki year-end 11

Caroline Wozniacki clinched her second-straight year-end No. 1 ranking on Wednesday, becoming the first woman to go back-to-back at the top spot since Justine Henin in 2007 and tying tennis luminaries like Monica Seles and Serena Williams on the career list. For her efforts she received a lovely piece of crystal from the WTA, which she can add to the other celebratory bowls, numerous floral arrangements and pieces of cake that she's been awarded for various No. 1 milestones over the past 55 weeks.

Busted Racquet collected photos from each of Caro's milestones for a gallery we're calling "the WTA sure likes to give Caroline Wozniacki a lot of stuff for being No. 1."

sharapova withdraws wtac11Game Point is Busted Racquet's roundup of news, facts and links from around the web.

Love -- Following her second-straight loss at the WTA Championships, Maria Sharapova withdrew from the event with a left ankle injury. In doing so, Sharapova assured that Caroline Wozniacki will finish the season at No. 1 in the WTA rankings. Earlier in the day, the Russian world No. 2 lost her second round-robin match at the tournament, falling to Li Na, 7-6, 6-4. The win came in Li Na's first ever match at the year-end tournament.

15 -- As Sharapova was in her press conference, Wozniacki was losting to Vera Zvonareva 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Christopher Clarey of The New York Times put it best on Twitter. "Not to be unkind but somehow appropriate that Wozniacki clinches year end No. 1 [after losing a match]." We've exhausted the "should Wozniacki be No. 1" debate long ago. The essence of my argument: If not her, then who?

30 -- Sharapova also thinks the women should join the men for the year-end events. No,

    • Brady revels in the fact that folks are making fun of Gronkowski

gronkTom Brady is thankful that teammate Rob Gronkowski posed for a (tasteful) photograph with an adult film star because it means he won't bear the brunt of mocking amongst New England Patriots players.

Speaking to Boston's WEEI radio, the two-time Super Bowl MVP expressed gratitude for Gronkowski's public relations nightmare. "I'm just glad I'm no longer the one that people are making fun of on my team on a daily basis," Brady, the good-looking, filthy-rich quarterback with a supermodel wife and adorable children, told "The Dennis and Callahan Show." "Gronk has definitely pulled into the lead there."

The tight end caught flak earlier this week when adult film star BiBi Jones posted two pictures of herself posing with Gronkowski while wearing his jersey. Gronkowski insists nothing happened, as if a grown man on a bye week would need to apologize about a platonic relationship with a young, go-getting entrepreneur. But apologize he did:

    • serena williams yelling uso11

Sam Stosur told a British newspaper she heard Serena Williams yell "come on!" during their U.S. Open final and had difficulty keeping cool during Williams' subsequent tirade against chair umpire Eva Asderaki.

Donald McRae writes in The Guardian:

Was Stosur shocked by Williams's venom? "Yeah," she says wryly. "You don't expect anyone to say that to an umpire. I certainly wouldn't want to be on the other end of it. It definitely wasn't nice."

Williams was fortunate to escape with a $2,000 fine but she was completely outplayed in a 6-2, 6-3 defeat. And yet Stosur's greatest triumph was overshadowed by the furore surrounding Williams. [...]

[...] Did she hear Williams's infamous screech of "Come on"? "Oh yeah," Stosur murmurs. "Absolutely. I was just trying to get the ball back; but Serena did something you can't do."

What does Stosur think of Williams's behaviour seven weeks later? "Well, I know it was not directed at me," she says dryly. "The umpire got all of it — which probably makes
