Wyoming Seminary in Forty Fort, Pa., is a traditional field hockey powerhouse, so it's no surprise that it's back in contention for a state title, with a berth in the state championship game on the line Wednesday afternoon in Seminary's faceoff with Crestwood (Pa.) High (the semifinal against Crestwood was originally scheduled for Tuesday afternoon but was postponed by bad weather). What is surprising is how Seminary is advancing through the playoffs, on the back of a male player who is singlehandedly dominating all Seminary's opponents.

That player is Cornelius Tietze, a junior and German native who joined the Seminary field hockey team this season and has played as the squad's lone male player ... and the only boy on the field in practically all of 24-2 Seminary's games, for that matter. In his last two outings, Tietze led his team to a 4-3 victory over District 3-AA runner-up Donegal with three goals and an assist, and a 4-2 win against Villa Maria, a game in which he again scored

When a good high school offense gets on a roll, it can be awfully hard to stop. That was the case for Corona Centennial (Calif.) High over the past two weeks, but even the Huskies would have had a hard time predicting their run of dominance. As pointed out by Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times, across two weeks, the Huskies scored on 19 straight possessions -- including nine straight touchdowns -- in back-to-back routs of Corona (Calif.) and Eastvale Roosevelt (Calif.) Highs.

"It's just impressive what they can do," Roosevelt coach Bill Stacy told the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

Evidently Stacy is a fan of understatement.

As one might expect, the points put up by Centennial across the two games were positively astounding. The Huskies scored 82 points against crosstown rival Corona, then racked up 63 against Roosevelt before ending their consecutive scoring drives streak by taking a knee in the fourth quarter on Thursday.

Top prospects decide to go to different colleges for any variety of reasons. Sometimes a location near home can land a top blue-chip player. Sometimes a particular style of play makes the difference between two schools. In this case of Reshanda Gray, one of the nation's top girls basketball players, Cal earned her signature in no small part because of a very specific reason: Candy.

Reshanda Gray is addicted to gushers. Not oil gushers. Not a marathon of emotional movies. Rather, the 6-foot-3 Gray -- who goes by the nickname "Too Tall" -- is addicted to the gelatinous candy filled with jelly, supermarket fare that comes in small packs. Somehow, Cal got that message ahead of time, and when Gray visited the Berkeley campus, the Golden Bears' staff made sure she was surrounded by Gushers everywhere she went.

"Everywhere I went, there were Gushers," Gray told Melissa Rohlin of the Los Angeles Times. "They filled every room up with Gushers."

We've finally reached the point in the season where the annointed Game of the Week and other Weekend Watch contenders are almost guaranteed to be great tussles, purely because only the best teams are still playing football. Well, Friday and Saturday night lived up to their billing, with a handful of top games in the Midwest bracketing a Florida showdown and another between a Bay Area power and a surgining new contender. Here's how the action shook out, and be sure to see how it all affected this week's RivalsHigh 100.

• No. 22 St. Edward (Ohio) 42, No. 24 Cleveland Glenville (Ohio) 22: Cleveland Glenville entered the season as one the nation's top teams, with plenty of motivation from last year's state final setback to help it get over the top. Instead, it was stopped in the second round of one of the nation's toughest tournaments by a ball control rushing attack and steady defensive pressure that forced all-everything quarterback Cardale Jones into more mistakes than he made all year.

Last week was a crazy one for Mendenhall (Miss.) High kicker Coy Sheppard. First, the senior filed a lawsuit against the Simpson County School District after his football coach, Chris Peterson, kicked him off the football team for wearing pink cleats. Then, just in time for Mendenhall's second-round state-playoff game, Sheppard was reinstated, leading to a glad-handing press conference on Friday where he withdrew his lawsuit.

Yet it turns out what seemed like a tidy conclusion to a sordid suspension was just another turn. According to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, Peterson refused to let Sheppard "dress out" with the rest of the Mendenhall High team, which kept him from playing in the game Friday night as the kicker claims he was promised. As a result, Sheppard's lawyer, Oliver Diaz -- a former Mississippi state Supreme Court justice -- is now moving forward with Sheppard's suit against the school district and Peterson.

Miracle finishes always bear watching, but one in California on Friday night took even more precedence when it lifted Encino (Calif.) Crespi High past Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame, the very team it knocked off, 34-28, with a remarkable final play.

As reported in both the Los Angeles Daily News and Los Angeles Times, the two teams faced a do-or-die game for a playoff berth, where Crespi found itself tied 28-28 with just enough time for a final snap some 68 yards from the Notre Dame end zone. As you can see below, quarterback Kenny Stenhouse took the snap and dropped off a short pass to the Celts' diminutive playmaker, Michael Davison, who used a variety of elusive moves to get the ball upfield before he appeared to be wrapped up by a Notre Dame defender. That's when he pitched the ball back to fellow receiver Terrence Williams, who traveled the remaining 50 yards, dragging past and leaping beyond a defender for the final 5 yards to playoff pay dirt.

In late October, seventh-grader Jessica Aney of Rochester, Minn. nearly made state history. With a shot at the Class 2A state high school tennis title at the tender age of 12, Aney fell just short in the championship match, falling to junior Rochester Century (Minn.) High teammate Kelsey Frechette 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Luckily for Aney, her consolation prize for that run was pretty impressive: On Tuesday, she was named the 2010 Sports Illustrated for Kids SportsKid of the year.

Aney, who stands only 4-foot-10, only lost three times all season, each in a match against Frechette in one tournament or another. According to the Rochester Post-Bulletin, the seventh grader also finished third in her age group at the USTA Winter National Tennis Championships last January.
