Here's a riddle: Why did the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association District I Section 5 individual wrestling tournament conclude on a weekday when it was scheduled to finish Saturday night? Here's a hint: Blame the weather.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Saturday's individual championships at Ridley (Pa.) High had to be concluded on Monday because of a power outage that occurred in the middle of a match between Interboro (Pa.) High's Wayne Armstrong and Chichester (Pa.) High's Dan Adamek. The bout had to be stopped and, along with the rest of the semifinal round, was concluded using manual scoreboards and stopwatches, along with auxiliary lights which were brought in to light the gym.

"We had to end it because we didn't know when the power would come back on," Ridley (Pa.) High assistant wrestling coach T.J. Meloney told the Inquirer.

Across Oregon, high school basketball teams are fine-tuning their playing rotations in preparation for the playoffs. The difference is that while some teams are happy to sitting back and working through traditional practices, the state's top squads are trying to furiously add final games to affect the state's new power rankings.

According to the Portland Oregonian, the flurry to add games to already crowded schedules has hit most of the state's top teams, as teams which have already landed automatic Oregon Scholastic Athletic Association playoff berths have tried to reach their maximum number of allowed games while scheduling the best opponents possible, all in an effort to re-jigger a high school version of college basketball's RPI.

"On Friday, we called seven schools," West Linn girls basketball coach Glen Lee told the Oregonian. "Some of them didn't work out with the scheduling, some of them didn't want to do it, some of them, it didn't benefit them. It has to almost be a perfect

To say that the Philadelphia Independent league basketball game between nationally ranked Academy of the New Church (Pa.) -- currently No. 94 in the RivalsHigh 100 -- and Penn Charter (Pa.) Academy was one of the strangest playoff games in recent years is an understatement.

To wit, the game included all the following bizarre aspects:

• The score after one quarter was 4-0.

• One team used a 5-foot-3 guard in the jump circle to start the game (that's the photo you see above).

• Penn Charter, which trailed after the first quarter, had no official shot attempts in that opening quarter, yet still earned enough fouls from ANC to head to the free-throw line ... where John Moderski missed a one-and-one.

• At one point, a five-second holding call was made ... at midcourt.

In the end, ANC took home a 38-22 victory, all while ending the career of longtime Penn Charter coach Jim "Flipper" Phillips. Yet while ANC may have "won" the game, according to the Philadelphia Daily News' Ted Silary, all

Is a shot thrown baseball-style truly a lucky shot? Probably. Is it entertaining? Absolutely.

With that in mind, witness the following bucket, which was scored by Lewiston (Idaho) High senior guard Jay Thomason at a quarterly buzzer during his team's 72-64 victory over Post Falls (Idaho) High.

Thomason, who started the game for the Bengals, finished with 14 points, none nearly as memorable as the shot above, which has to be one of the more impressive buzzer beaters we've seen this year. It may not be quite as impressive as Marvin Lefridge's 90-foot wonder from earlier in February, but it's still a head-turning shot.

Perhaps as impressive as the shot itself was the reaction of Lewiston coach Corey Williams and his staff, which wasted no time celebrating the shot, instead wildly gesticulating with the universal "count it!" motion to ensure that the bucket went on the scoreboard. You'll have to forgive the Ursuline (Texas) Academy girls soccer program if it feels a little aggrieved, despite winning what should be a national-record 21st straight state title on Saturday. The Bears have good reason to be upset: Despite the fact that their 21 consecutive titles is a national record, it's not being credited as a nationwide mark because of the association in which Ursuline competes.

As pointed out by the Dallas Morning News' Corbett Smith, Ursuline competes in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools -- TAPPS -- just as all other private schools across the state do. That stands in sharp contrast to most states across the country, which integrate public schools and private schools in the same athletic governing body.

It took Kate Messler four years to get into a varsity basketball game, so once she got off the bench, she made sure her coach and teammates' effort was well worth their while.

According to WMUR TV out of Manchester, New Hampshire, Messler spent more than three years as a manager of the Oyster River (N.H.) High basketball team. The senior student with special needs -- Messler has the developmental disorder Trisomy 9P -- has always been considered a part of the team, but her coach and teammates wanted to help her fulfill a lifelong dream of playing in a varsity game before she graduated from high school.

Messler got her chance when the Bobcats built up a near-insurmountable 20-point halftime lead against Sanborn (N.H.) High, leading Oyster River coach Dane Nichols to announce that when the team went out for the second half, Messler would be in the lineup.

Tim Wolchko doesn't want to be considered a revolutionary. Yet what he's accomplished in winning the New Jersey high school bowling championship is still a significant step toward proving someone can still thrive even while ignoring all unwanted technical advice sent their away.

That's because Wolchko, an Egg Harbor (N.J.) Township High junior, just won his state's high school bowling championship while using a bizarre, two-handed technique that looks more like a first grader at his local lanes than a competitive teenager who takes part in at least three bowling leagues at a time.

"It just feels right," Wolchko told the Newark Star-Ledger. "It's my form. It's how I bowl.

"People are always asking, 'Whoa, how do you do that? Is it comfortable?' I just tell them it's how I've been bowling since I was 4 or 5 years old."
