    My full lineup:

SP: Jake Arrieta ($57) - He's not cheap, but with 15 consecutive winning decisions and 24 consecutive quality starts, there's the highest of likelihoods that you'll get what you pay for.

SP: Tanner Roak ($39) - Coming off a career-best 15 K effort and hosting a Phillies team that has scored the fewest runs in MLB to this point.

C: Dioner Navarro ($7) - For $7, you can do alot worse than a backstop riding a five-game hitting streak that includes two home runs, a triple and a double.

OF: Mark Trumbo ($9) - He's currently a top 15 player in the Yahoo game, he's facing John Danks ... what am I missing?

  • High Fives: Colome answers the call

Brandon Funston at Yahoo Sports 7 days ago

The Yahoo Fantasy Baseball '16 season is underway. With that in mind, Brandon Funston, Scott Pianowski and Dalton Del Don take a look at the the early movers and shakers on the waiver wire that should pique the interest of fantasy owners. Let's get to it ...

    3. Devin Mesoraco, Cin - He's one season removed from a 25-homer, 80-RBI campaign, and catcher remains thin

    4. Jarrod Dyson, KC - He's back off the DL, and I'd bet he's better than Billy Hamilton from here on out

    3. Rich Hill, Oak - He's now up to 65 strikeouts over his past 48 innings over the last two seasons

    3. Cameron Maybin, Det - He combined for 33 steals/homers in just 141 games last season and should be back soon

    3. Tyler Glasnow, Pit - Another legit prospect worth stashing in deeper leagues

    3. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Det - He's been a top-40 player but owns a career .241/.312/.424 line. He's fanned 14 times over 35 ABs

    My full lineup:

SP: Jake Arrieta ($58) - Pitching pays the bills here, so it's hard to pass on a player that has won 14 consecutive decisions and has run off 23 consecutive quality starts.

SP: Johnny Cueto ($51) - Cueto is 3-0 this season and 6-1 with a 2.54 ERA in eight career starts vs. Arizona. And he'll be opposed by Diamondbacks starter Shelby Miller, who has been throwing batting practice this season (8.53 ERA, 5 HRs allowed in 12.2 IP).

  • High Fives: Mauer, Madson making waves on the wire

Brandon Funston at Yahoo Sports 14 days ago

The Yahoo Fantasy Baseball '16 season is underway. With that in mind, Brandon Funston, Scott Pianowski and Andy Behrens take a look at the the early movers and shakers on the waiver wire that should pique the interest of fantasy owners. Let's get to it ...

    3. Domingo Santana, Mil -  Doubt he'll hit for average, but he's a clear 20-homer candidate.

4.Joe Mauer, Min -  No power to speak of, but he's otherwise raking like vintage Mauer, challenging .400.

    3. Ryan Madson, Oak -  Madson has already picked up two saves, working in a committee-ish arrangement with Doolittle.

    3.  Leonys Martin, Sea -  Oddly low ownership percentage for a guy with proven 30-steal speed.

    3.  Nate Jones, CHW -  His stuff is evil. If you're in a league with an IP limit, you want high-K middle relievers like Nate.

    3.  Freddie Freeman, Atl -  Eventually he'll start hitting, but will there be anyone on base to drive in?

  • Baseball Big Board: Met gains

Brandon Funston at Yahoo Sports 14 days ago

The Big Board takes into consideration past returns, current performance and expected future gains in determining who should be included among the top 50 fantasy baseball players. Essentially, the Big Board is a cheat sheet designed for a fantasy owner who is planning to participate in a draft today. Yahoo! Sports Fantasy baseball default scoring settings (5x5) are used as the baseline for the Big Board.

    My full lineup:

SP: Ervin Santana ($32) - Minnesota's Ervin Santana is one of the cheapest starting pitcher options on Thursday's board. He was one of the best pitchers in MLB during the final five weeks of the '15 season, going 5-1 down the stretch with a quality start in each of his final seven turns in the rotation. And he's picked up where he left off with a 2.25 ERA and 10 Ks through his first eight innings of '16. Facing a White Sox club that has managed just a .608 OPS versus righties in 249 ABs this season, Santana looks like a nice bargain play.

    SP: Jaime Garcia ($42)

    C: Yan Gomes ($14)

    1B: Joe Mauer ($13)

    2B: D.J. LeMahieu $17

    SS: Aledmys Diaz $15

    OF: Hunter Pence $19

    OF: Yasiel Puig $18

  • High Fives: Spring gives rise to a breakout Story

Brandon Funston at Yahoo Sports 29 days ago

Yahoo Fantasy Baseball '16 is about to move into regular-season action. With that in mind, Brandon Funston, Dalton Del Don and Andy Behrens break down the spring that was and gear up for the season ahead. Let's get to it ...

    3. Brock Holt, Bos - He's locked up a starting role in Boston's outfield and is MI eligible in Yahoo leagues

    3. Sean Doolitte, Oak - I'm terrified of a pitcher with an extensive injury history currently dealing with a triceps strain

  • Oldies, but still goodies: Beltre heads disrespected elderly class

Brandon Funston at Yahoo Sports 1 mth ago

If you are fan (like me) of Cameron Crowe's highly quotable classic, "Say Anything," you probably remember this exchange between the characters of Ione Skye (Diane) and John Cusack (Lloyd):

DIANE: You don't like old people? LLOYD: Me? Sure I do. DIANE: Come on. LLOYD: Well, except for one thing. I worked at a smorgasbord, and the old people would flock there, and they loved to eat, and they'd just jam their mouths, you know? And they'd just eat with their mouths open, and to be honest, it was too much for me. You get to be thinking about how short life is, and how maybe everything has no meaning, because you wake up, and you're frying burgers, and you're like 60, 70, and then you check out, you know? What are you doing? And I don't need to be thinking about those kind of things. That's the reason......But I'm not sure about all that. DIANE: I think that's ageism, and that's being prejudiced against people because they're old. LLOYD: Really? Well, you're really turning me around here.

     Adrian Beltre, Tex, 3B - turning 37 on April 7th - (82.4 ADP)

  • High Fives: Stoppers and backstops

Brandon Funston at Yahoo Sports 1 mth ago

Yahoo Fantasy Baseball '16 is open for business, and MLB's spring action is starting to heat up. With that in mind, Brandon Funston, Scott Pianowski and Dalton Del Don close out a High Fives diamond tour with a closer look at relief pitchers and catchers. Let's get to it ...

    1. Atlanta Braves - Sounds like manager Fredi Gonzalez doesn't want defined roles, but I'd still bet on Arodys Vizcaino leading the team in saves, although none may finish with 20

  • Buying generic: Franco a budget-priced Sano doppelganger

Brandon Funston at Roto Arcade 1 mth ago

As consumers, we love name brands. It's why we reach for Advil or Listerine or Gillette razors when there are generic brand options readily available that offer the same quality and results for less.

Fantasy baseball is no exception to this consumption phenomenon. We'll see a player go multiple rounds earlier than another nearly identical player simply because he's the buzzier name.

To prove my point of anecdotal thinking often winning out over analytical thinking, here's a few examples of where you can pass on the name brand for a more generic offering that will save you draft price without losing value.

Looking for power upside at the hot corner?

Name brand = Miguel Sano (52.4 ADP); Generic = Maikel Franco (140.6)

Hoping to hit the 50-HR lottery?

Name brand = Giancarlo Stanton (8.6); Generic = Chris Davis (38.7)

Looking for fresh, fast legs in the outfield?

    Name brand = Billy Hamilton (109.3) ; Generic = Billy Burns (169.2)

Looking for a shortstop with pop

Name brand = Addison Russell (158.3); Generic = Marcus Semien (245.7)

Thirtysomething innings eater that can pile up Ks

Name brand = James Shields (132.7); Generic = Jason Hammel (198.3)
