    • After trade talks to send Paul Pierce to Dallas fell through, Celtics make another spring run

Before the trade deadline passed, the Boston Celtics had one final choice to make on the franchise's future: In a three-way deal that would've secured Josh Smith and surrendered Paul Pierce to Dallas, Atlanta wanted Boston's first-round draft pick, too.

The Celtics were in talks to send Paul Pierce to Dallas at the trade deadline. (AP)As much as any of the proposed deals discussed in February, perhaps this had been the closest Pierce had come to parting with the Celtics, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Dallas had constructed a package that included Jae Crowder, Brandan Wright and Dahntay Jones to Atlanta, with the Mavericks and Hawks exchanging positions in the 2013 NBA draft.

Nevertheless, Boston wouldn't relent on the pick and the deal died on meeting-room grease boards in three cities. Celtics coach Doc Rivers has always understood that general manager Danny Ainge's reshaping of the roster is inevitable, but he's never been in a hurry to lord over a rebuild.

    • Bucks give J.J. Redick a shot at relevancy

The Bucks have won four of five games since trading for J.J. Redick . (USA Today Sports)

MILWAUKEE – On his way out of Orlando, the general manager's words stayed with J.J. Redick: It's nothing personal, Rob Hennigan told him.

"But it is personal," Redick says now.

Perhaps this is a blessing and curse, because professional sports can break a ballplayer's heart this way. Redick's loyal this way. He immerses himself in the franchise's fabric, invests in the community. His two old coaches – Mike Krzyzewski and Stan Van Gundy – still get calls and texts on a regular basis.

"My wife Chelsea and I built a life in Orlando," Redick told Yahoo! Sports. "Listen, there was no anger [over the trade], but there was a little bit of disappointment.

"Part of me wishes I could've been there my whole career and been part of the rebuilding, part of the turnaround, and gotten back to the finals in my 11th or 12th year. That's the romantic in me, the idealist."

Aaron Brooks averaged eight points for the Kings this season. (USA Today Sports)Brooks will sign the contract on Tuesday. The deal includes a team option for next season

Brooks agreed to a buyout with the Sacramento Kings on Friday.

Brooks signed a two-year, $6.6 million contract with the Kings over the summer. He's averaged eight points in just 21 minutes a game this season. The Kings have given increasing minutes to young guards Isaiah Thomas and Jimmer Fredette.

    • LeBron James soars above $1 million dunk offers and other distractions

NEW YORK – As LeBron James lifted higher and higher, he cocked the ball behind his head and reached back further inside Madison Square Garden. Pass stolen, Carmelo Anthony doubled over in angst, and James had come to deliver the perfect punctuation on one more peerless performance.

Higher and higher, James elevated in the final seconds of a virtuoso victory over the New York Knicks on Sunday. Higher and higher over purposeless debates of financial ransoms for pointless dunk contests, higher and higher over a sport that struggles to find context and comparison for the way with which his greatness has separated him, LeBron James floats above it all: untouchable and impenetrable.

These final minutes of a 99-93 victory were pure genius inside the Garden – the scoring and passing and devastating defense leaving him with 29 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and a block. Out of an athlete for the centuries, this has been a season for the ages.

    • Heat sign Juwan Howard

The Miami Heat signed 40 year-old forward Juwan Howard to a 10-day contract.

Juwan Howard could return to the Miami Heat. (Getty)After playing the past two years with the Heat, Howard had remained unsigned until Saturday. He has stayed in shape and has been working out throughout the season.

The Heat created a roster spot at the trade deadline, sending Dexter Pittman to the Memphis Grizzlies for a trade exception.

Howard had been a respected leader on the Heat and was popular with teammates, coaches and management. He played sparingly in three Miami playoff victories on the way to his first championship ring in 2012.

Howard's greater role for the Heat came off the floor, where he was a trusted steward in the locker room. During the Heat's conference semifinal series victory over Indiana, Howard played the part of enforcer with Indiana Pacers forward Lance Stephenson. After Stephenson made the choke sign at LeBron James in a game, Howard later confronted him.

In 1,201 career games over 18 seasons, Howard has averaged 13.4

    • Delonte West to report to D-League

With NBA teams uneasy about taking a risk on his past behavioral issues, free-agent guard Delonte West intends to report to the Texas Legends of the Development League on Monday, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.

Delonte West spent last season with the Mavericks. (USA Today Sports)West, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, had planned to join the Legends earlier in February, but never arrived. Texas leaves Sunday for a two-game road trip to Los Angeles and Bakersfield, and West intends to arrive in Texas on Monday and join the team when it returns to Frisco, a Dallas suburb, on Thursday, a source said.

    • Sacramento has 'shot' to keep Kings after putting together bid to challenge Seattle group

The proposed bid of 24-Hour Fitness founder Mark Mastrov and billionaire Ron Burkle to purchase the Sacramento Kings and construct a downtown arena has a chance to challenge a Seattle ownership's group to move the franchise.

Kevin Johnson has helped put together a bid to try to keep the Kings in Sacramento. (AP)Mastrov and the local investors' bid is "slightly lower," than the $341 million that the Chris Hansen-Steve Ballmer group has agreed to pay for the available 65 percent of the Kings, a high-level source involved in the talks told Yahoo! Sports on Thursday night.

"They have a shot," the source said. "It's still a long shot, but the bid will be close enough to cause real debate."

With a Friday deadline for submitting a counter bid to the NBA to attempt to keep the Kings from moving, Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson unveiled Mastrov as the principal investor in the city's plan to foil the Maloof family's signed agreement to sell to the Seattle group.

Burkle and the city have agreed on a deal to construct a new arena in the city's downtown. Johnson recruited

With the arrival of a clearance letter from the Chinese Basketball Association on Wednesday, the Boston Celtics will sign free agent forward D.J. White to a 10-day contract, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

D.J. White played for the Bobcats last season. (AP)White will likely be activated for the Celtics' Friday game against Golden State.

With the losses of Jared Sullinger (back surgery) and Jason Collins (trade) in the Celtics frontcourt, White could get an immediate chance to contribute.

Fisher arrived in Oklahoma City Sunday night and will sign his contract on Monday.

Derek Fisher hasn't played since injuring his knee with the Mavericks in December. (Getty Images)Fisher, 38, signed with the Thunder late last season and helped Oklahoma City make its push to the NBA Finals. He joined the Dallas Mavericks early this season and played nine games in December before suffering a knee injury. He asked the Mavericks to release him, so he could spend more time with his family.
