Desperate to replenish their guard depth, the Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to a deal with former NBA lottery pick Kendall Marshall, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Marshall, the 13th overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft, was averaging 19.7 points and 9.6 assists per game for the Delaware 87ers of the NBA Development League. The Lakers are in dire need of guard help, losing Steve Blake, Steve Nash, Jordan Farmar and Kobe Bryant to injuries.
Nash will be out another four weeks, the Lakers announced Thursday.
The Lakers plan to turn to Xavier Henry to play point guard in the short term, coach Mike D'Antoni told reporters on Thursday.
Marshall was in Austin, Texas, with the 87ers and was taking a Thursday night flight to Los Angeles, sources said.
After leaving North Carolina after his sophomore season, Marshall played the 2012-13 season with the Phoenix Suns before getting traded in October to the Washington Wizards, who released him. Marshall, who is 6-foot-4, has shown significant improvement in the D-League with Delaware, and has been on the radar of several NBA teams searching for a young point guard to develop.Fri, Dec 207:30 PM PSTMinnesota at LA LakersPreview Game

Before the natural anguish of learning that his left knee had suffered a fracture, a most improbable sense washed over Kobe Bryant: relief.
"Lucky it wasn't a meniscus," Bryant told Yahoo Sports on Thursday afternoon.
After six games this season, here's the solace today: Six weeks beats six months. Six weeks beats surgery, beats losing the rest of a season, beats losing the time left on a clock ticking closer and closer to the end of a prodigious basketball life.
Once again, Bryant is back to that excruciating place he had never dealt with in his career, the rest, recovery and rehabilitation as the Los Angeles Lakers and the rest of the NBA goes on without him.
Everything is conspiring against Bryant now, and the declarations of his demise promise to grow louder and louder. He is 35 years old, fighting back from an Achilles tear, a fractured kneecap and awaiting the start of a $48.5 million extension over the next two years. The walls are closing, his path to restoration never so perilous, and yet here was Kobe Bryant on Thursday afternoon making clear his belief on those who'd dare doubt his resolve again.

After failing to find a suitable deal for center Omer Asik before a self-imposed Thursday deadline, the Houston Rockets backed away from trade discussions, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Houston general manager Daryl Morey informed Asik's agent Arn Tellem of his decision on Thursday afternoon, sources said.
"This gives [Houston] a chance to buy some more time," one source involved in the deal process told Yahoo Sports.
The NBA's trade deadline is Feb. 20.
Asik has a $15 million salary-cap hit next season, and that, combined with rival teams' unwillingness to package a quality power forward with an unrestricted first-round draft pick, pushed Morey away from making what he believed would be a bad deal now.
Boston had offered Houston a package of Brandon Bass, Courtney Lee and a restricted future first-round pick, but the sides never came to terms on an agreement. Philadelphia had remained in pursuit of Asik, but Morey found no deal there, either.Fri, Dec 205:00 PM PSTHouston at IndianaPreview Game

The Boston Celtics have gained traction in trade talks to acquire Houston Rockets center Omer Asik, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The talks have centered on a package including forward Brandon Bass, guard Courtney Lee and a first-round pick, sources said. The Celtics and Rockets are still haggling over which future first-round pick goes to Houston in Asik deal, sources said.
Rockets center Dwight Howard and Bass played together on Orlando's frontline, but sources insist Howard was never enamored with the partnership. Boston has been making the case Bass is much improved from his time in Orlando, and most agree he's an upgrade over Rockets power forward Terrence Jones.
Th Rockets have a self-imposed Thursday deadline to reach agreement on a trade for Asik.
The Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks have faded significantly in conversations for Asik, sources said. The Philadelphia 76ers also have had talks with the Rockets about a possible deal for Asik.
Houston has been pursuing a power forward in the deal.

As New York Knicks executives work to convince owner Jim Dolan he should ignore public criticism and complete a deal for Kyle Lowry, the Brooklyn Nets are gaining traction as a possible destination for the Toronto Raptors point guard, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The Knicks are desperate for a point guard, and their front office had a deal together that would've sent Raymond Felton, Metta World Peace and a 2018 first-round pick for Lowry.
The Knicks' front office is determined to re-enter talks on Lowry, league sources said, but it is unclear how they will try to amend a trade package – or whether they're willing to return the original offer to the table. Without the future first-round pick, there's little chance of the Knicks landing Lowry, sources said.
The Golden State Warriors also have remained involved in talks with Toronto on Lowry, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Dolan became livid over the public disclosure of the deal terms and became aware over some segments of reaction that deemed the package a third straight debacle in dealing with Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri, sources said.Sat, Dec 219:00 AM PSTMemphis at New YorkPreview Game

The New York Knicks are pursuing Toronto point guard Kyle Lowry with a package of Raymond Felton, Metta World Peace and a 2018 first-round draft pick, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The Knicks refused a Raptors proposal that would've included Iman Shumpert and Felton, sources told Yahoo Sports. WIthout a first-round pick or Shumpert, there is no traction for a deal. The Knicks have no appetite for including Shumpert or rookie Tim Hardaway Jr. in a package.
Knicks owner Jim Dolan is sensitive to the public perception that Toronto general manger Masai Ujiri bamboozled New York in the Carmelo Anthony trade, and the chance of getting panned for giving up too much in a deal for Lowry has become a hurdle in these talks, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Ujiri was the GM of the Denver Nuggets when he negotiated a deal that included Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Felton, Timofey Mozgov and a first-round pick for a package that included Anthony and Chauncey Billups.
Toronto is discussing deals for Lowry with an ever-growing list of teams, league sources said.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. – Long before Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose could resume a relentless rehabilitation regimen, the youngest MVP in NBA history and Rob McClanaghan had to go back beyond all the fierce workouts – beyond the thousands of hours of shooting and slashing and sweat – and resume the most fundamental of grade school drills: form shooting.
"One hand, elbow in, eyes on the rim," McClanaghan remembered over dinner recently. "I think it was more mentally taxing on him than anything we did, because D-Rose always wanted to do more. My job was simply to tell him, 'Be patient. We have time.' "
Beginning over 18 months ago, shuttling between Chicago and Los Angeles, McClanaghan and Rose progressively did more and more. Once Rose had missed a full season and returned to the gymnasium in June, McClanaghan told him simply: "I'm going to work you out like you never got injured. Let's go back to what we did before you ever got hurt."

The Chicago Bulls will sign point guard D.J. Augustin after he cleared waivers on Wednesday, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Augustin needs to pass a physical with the Bulls on Thursday. He was waived by the Toronto Raptors on Monday.
The Bulls lost superstar point guard Derrick Rose for the season, and have been searching for further depth at the position with backup guard Mike James working his way back from a sprained knee. Shooting guard Jimmy Butler has been recovering from a foot injury and could return in the near future.
The Bulls (8-10) are clinging to the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and have lost seven of 10 games.
Augustin, 26, played sparingly for the Raptors after a season with the Indiana Pacers. In 10 games in Toronto, he averaged two points and eight minutes.
The Raptors signed Augustin as a free agent this summer, but released him after needing the roster spot upon completing a seven-player trade with the Sacramento Kings.
As part of the deal that unloaded Rudy Gay, the Raptors acquired guard Greivis Vasquez. For now, Toronto has committed to young, developing point guards Julyan Stone and Dwight Buycks as backups for the season.

As the Golden State Warriors absorb injuries and shoddy defense on their frontline, they are signing forward Hilton Armstrong out of NBA D-League affiliate Santa Cruz, sources told Yahoo Sports.
Armstrong, who will be in uniform against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night, has averaged 15 points and seven rebounds for Santa Cruz.
The Warriors have been inconsistent this season, trudging to a 12-10 record. Center Jermaine O'Neal and forward Draymond Green missed practice Tuesday because of injuries. Forward Andre Iguodala continues to be sidelined with a hamstring injury.
The 6-foot-11 Armstrong was a first-round draft pick out of Connecticut in 2006. He played four seasons for the New Orleans Hornets before stops with Sacramento, Houston, Washington and Atlanta. He has played parts of the last two years in France, Greece and the D-League.

Memphis forward Quincy Pondexter is expected to miss the rest of the season with a stress fracture in his right foot, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The Grizzlies confirmed Monday that an MRI revealed that he had suffered the stress fracture in Saturday night's game, and the franchise declared him out "indefinitely."
Nevertheless, the Grizzlies and Pondexter are resigned to the fact that he is likely lost for the season, league sources said.
Memphis is already down center Marc Gasol (MCL sprain) and guard Tony Allen (hip bruise).
Pondexter, 25, has averaged 6.3 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 18 minutes a game this season. He was injured in the first half of Saturday's loss to the Golden State Warriors.
Memphis is bringing in several guards for workouts on Monday, including Kendall Marshall and Seth Curry out of the NBA Development League and free agents Reggie Williams and Darius Morris, sources told Yahoo Sports.
