  • Sources: Knicks fined for Phil Jackson's comment on D'Angelo Russell

Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo Sports 1 day ago

The NBA has fined the New York Knicks for president Phil Jackson publicly commenting on Ohio State freshman guard D'Angelo Russell, a league source told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday night.

It is immediately unclear how much money the Knicks were fined.

Upon leaving Ohio State's game on Thursday night in Columbus, Jackson told Cleveland.com that Russell was a "great looking kid, [a] great prospect."

The NBA forbids league officials from making public comments on college underclassmen. The rule is partly in place to protect the NBA from the perception that it's pushing players to leave school early for the draft.

Around the NBA, front-office executives were surprised Jackson would violate the rule, given that it is a well-known rule that his peers understand has to be observed. Most saw it as a window into Jackson's inexperience as a front-office executive.

After winning 11 NBA championships as a coach, this is Jackson's first full season as an NBA executive. The Knicks will have one of the highest picks in the 2015 draft, and Russell is considered the No. 1 point guard prospect in college basketball.

  • Sources: Nuggets fire coach Brian Shaw

Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo Sports 2 days ago

The Denver Nuggets fired coach Brian Shaw on Tuesday morning, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Nuggets have free-fallen to a 20-39 record in Shaw's second season as coach and have been rife with locker-room issues.

Assistant coach Melvin Hunt will become interim head coach for the remainder of the season and then the team will search for a full-time replacement, league sources told Yahoo.

Nuggets president Josh Kroenke told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday afternoon that he'll work with general manager Tim Connelly over the next few weeks on formulating a plan for the coaching search.

The Nuggets play the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night. Denver has lost 19 of its past 21 games, including a franchise-record 10 straight at home.

Shaw is the third NBA coach to be fired this season. The Sacramento Kings dismissed Michael Malone in December and the Orlando Magic fired Jacque Vaughn last month.

  • Sources: Thunder guard Russell Westbrook likely to return Wednesday

Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo Sports 2 days ago

After missing one game because of a facial surgery, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook will likely return Wednesday night against Philadelphia – wearing a protective mask, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

There is still a final determination to be made, but Westbrook is expected to play barring an unforeseen setback, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Westbrook is scheduled to go through parts of the Thunder's practice on Tuesday, a league source said.

Westbrook suffered a fracture of the cheekbone on Friday night in Portland and underwent surgery in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Westbrook has been on a historic run, delivering three straight triple-doubles and averaging 31.2 points, 10.3 assists and 9.1 rebounds in the month of February. Westbrook has pushed himself into the MVP discussion and the Thunder (33-27) into the eighth seed of the Western Conference playoff race.

Thunder star Kevin Durant has been sidelined six consecutive games with a foot injury.

  • Sources: Bulls guard Jimmy Butler likely to miss 3-4 weeks with elbow injury

Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo Sports 3 days ago

Chicago Bulls guard Jimmy Butler will likely miss 3-4 weeks because of a left elbow sprain, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Butler underwent an MRI on Monday, which revealed that surgery will not be necessary, league sources said.

Possibly missing Butler for a month is a significant blow to the Bulls, who are without Derrick Rose after he underwent surgery Friday to repair a meniscus injury in his right knee. Rose is expected to return in 4-6 weeks.

Butler, averaging 20.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists in a league-high 38.9 minutes per game, was injured during Sunday’s 96-86 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

An All-Star in his fourth season with the Bulls, Butler, 25, is considered one of the top restricted free agents available next summer.

  • Referee union had no involvement in NBA's new plan to publicize evaluation of calls

Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo Sports 5 days ago

The National Basketball Referee's Association had no involvement in the NBA's decision to make public the league's evaluation of officiating calls in the final two minutes of close games, a union official told Yahoo Sports on Friday.

"We did not participate in the elaboration of this process and we cannot evaluate its effect until after it has been implemented," NBRA general counsel Lee Seham told Yahoo Sports in an email on Friday.

Beginning next week, the NBA will make public play-by-play reports involving all referee calls in the final two minutes and overtimes of regular-season and playoff games, the NBA announced on Friday. The NBA says each play will be reviewed by a senior referee manager of basketball operations manager and include a video link to the play.

The process will include correct and incorrect calls made by NBA officials. The NBA is calling it part of its "transparency initiative" connected to its officiating program.

After winning 11 NBA championships as a coach, this is Jackson’s first year as an NBA executive. The Knicks will have one of the highest picks in the 2015 NBA draft, and Russell is considered the No. 1 point guard prospect in college basketball.

  • Sources: 76ers claim Thomas Robinson off waivers to meet NBA's salary minimum

Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo Sports 8 days ago

The Philadelphia 76ers have acquired forward Thomas Robinson through a claim in the NBA's waiver process, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Robinson had reached agreement on a deal with the Brooklyn Nets should he have cleared waivers and become a free agent. For the Nets to sign Robinson for a possible playoff appearance, the Sixers would have to waive him by Saturday.

The Sixers needed the sum of Robinson's remaining salary to honor the obligations of the collective bargaining agreement that dictate a team needs to reach within 90 percent of the NBA's salary floor before season's end – or pay out that shortfall amount equally among the rest of the players on the roster.

Robinson's $3,678,360 salary pushes the Sixers over the salary floor. Denver is no longer responsible for paying Robinson's salary. The Nuggets saved close to $900,000 on the balance of Robinson's salary because the Sixers claimed him.

The Sixers can use Robinson to reach the salary then waive him again. Nevertheless, their initial plan is to keep Robinson and take a look at him in the short-term, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Hamilton, 24, has averaged 16.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists this season for Reno of the D-League.

Hamilton has had NBA stops with Denver (2011-14) and Houston (2014). He was the 26th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft out of Texas.

  • Sources: Thomas Robinson to sign with Nets after clearing waivers

Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo Sports 9 days ago

Forward Thomas Robinson has reached agreement on a deal with the Brooklyn Nets, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Robinson, the fifth overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft, will sign a 10-day deal with the Nets, which is expected to lead to an agreement for the remainder of the season, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Robinson will clear NBA waivers on Tuesday at 5 p.m. EST.

After Portland traded Robinson to Denver on Thursday, Robinson's agent requested he be waived because of a lack of playing time available to him with the Nuggets.

Brooklyn wants to take a long look at the 6-foot-10 Robinson with hopes of a potential future partnership. Robinson has played for the Kings, Houston Rockets and Trail Blazers without finding traction in his career.

Robinson, 23, averaged 12 minutes in 32 appearances for the Blazers this season.

  • Anthony Davis day-to-day after re-injuring shoulder

Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo Sports 10 days ago

New Orleans Pelicans star Anthony Davis has suffered no structural damage to his right shoulder and his return to the lineup has been termed day-to-day, a league source told Yahoo Sports.

Davis, an MVP candidate, reinjured his right shoulder on Saturday night in a collision with Miami's Hassan Whiteside. The injury caused him to leave the game.

Davis withdrew from the All-Star game with the bruised shoulder last week.

"He got it in the same spot," a source with knowledge of the injury told Yahoo Sports.

Davis is averaging 24 points and 10 rebounds a game for New Orleans. The Pelicans are 28-27 and two games behind Oklahoma City for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference.
